I've watched back the Ajax away game, have it on the planner ready to watch again
Would also watch the City games again but not the final
Saying that, going to the stadium with all the fans around in buoyant mood was one of my proudest days as a fan
Everything up until the match was amazing

I echo everyone's view here. Never even read this thread beyond kick off. Just had a quick peek and it's even more heartbreaking seeing the comments in the build up, just don't read past page 55.

The penalty was bullshit but there was still a huge amount of football to be played but, inexplicably, we went out with a whimper and barely laid a glove on a very flat liverpool side on the night.

Hugely dissapointing given the incredible journey to get there.

I hate to say it, but it was the ultimate bottle job. Liverpool even changed their game to accommodate us, were poor as a consequence and we failed to take advantage. The penalty might have been harsh but there was so much time left for us to take the game. Instead we just stared dumbly at our testicles like a person who’d gone into hospital to have their appendix out and woke to find they’d accidentally had a sex change.

And I said it before and immediately after the game- not starting Moura was the biggest mistake of Poch’s career so far. He has the game of a lifetime in the semifinal, the sort of performance that creates its own mystique and he got dropped. Football is massively psychological, and the Liverpool defence would not have wanted to play against a tricky, pacey Brazilian who’d recently entered Champions League folklore for the best kind of reasons

I'll never get over the penalty. I'll forever be convinced that Mane noticed Sissoko pointing and took aim at his arm. That's as clear an instance of "ball to hand" as one can possibly imagine. UEFA had implemented the current "objective" standard for handball throughout last season's CL, so the ref wasn't necessarily wrong to give it, but for me it's a fundamental violation of the spirit of the handball law as it had always existed.

The match was completely turned on its head 30 seconds in. We had a hobbled CF and a midfield that had been absolutely run into the ground (thanks to Levy's negligence in the transfer market the summer before) and were up against a parked bus defending a lead. We were so lifeless on the day that it's hard to image another result, but the match would have been completely different had the penalty not been given.

What is wrong with me! I was there in Madrid, saw the game live and yet I'm more nervous re-reading the build up comments in this thread now! Must have been the hot weather and lager that calmed me down before the match!!

You've probably blocked out the final and you're under the impression that you're back in the build up.

I was there too and I’m still gutted about it. Seeing this thread bumped after I’ve tried to avoid reading about it this weekend is a bit of a kick in the nuts. I honestly don’t think I’ll be over it until I see us lift another trophy.

So, football is massively psychological and yet you spend the first half of your post ignoring the psychology of conceding the penalty so early and the massive build up of nervous energy and adrenaline it sucked out of us?

I watched the highlights literally the day straight after trying to work out where it all went wrong and have seen them a few times since then. Never felt so meh after a match - all the emotion was drained from me after the semi final and the build up to the game that it was an anti climax in the end.

In my opinion that was the beginning of the end of Poch career at Spurs. He completely threw his philosophy into the trash. The most annoying part was Lucas giving interviews how Poch never mentioned why he choose to do that nor an apology.

Pochettino paid for his inexperience and betraying his own philosophy.

Another point that I am not entirely sure but I think we went to Madrid far too late. Or at lest we should have done more training sessions in warmer countries / cities. I am not a coach or have knowledge about it but maybe we would be more suited to the warmer weather ???

Pretty sure Liverpool did his training sessions in Portugal ? I remember Klopp said something like playing against a portuguese which had similar playstyle as Spurs.

I still blame the heat. It was a freakishly hot evening in Madrid and absolutely killed the game - the pace throughout was so slow and everyone looked like they we're playing one of those horrendous, walking pace, 100% humidity world cup matches.

Would've been a completely different match if it was held anywhere in Northern Europe and the early goal wouldn't have been anywhere near as huge of an advantage.
