I agree, although hindsight is a beautiful thing. A pandemic like this is only one of many similar things we should have been prepared for, but even after this i think it's highly unlikely there will be much change in people's thinking on those other areas.
That's true, but it was top of the government scientists' list of potential disasters, well above terrorism, nuclear meltdowns etc. In fact, it'd been top for some time, and a pandemic with ~65k deaths in the UK was given a likelihood of about 2% per year. That might seem low, but it implies a risk of over 55% over 40 years; this was ultimately a matter of when rather than if. We really should have been better prepared and these documents from before the crisis show that it isn't a matter of hindsight.

I suspect most top clubs are facing similar shortfalls on top of wages. No wonder the transfer budget cupboard might be bare.

They lost £4m with our game against them being cancelled. We probably lost more than that saying we were playing at home.

Interestingly the figure I had heard the club using was it is costing us £4m per game.

This obviously doesn't account for all the other stadium revenue such as the boxing, events, corporate hosting, spurs shop, etc... that happens outside of matchdays. Even the M Cafe generates a bit of revenue every day of the week - it's near full every time i go in there.

Two of those events were World Wars though, the most recent of which started over 80 years ago. Should PL clubs do what Wimbledon did and have pandemic and other insurances to cover them - yes. Should they build a contingency system based around the potential for their business to

You don't need to pinpoint what interrupts the season, just what you do if something does.

I really could not care less about how much Man United (or any other club, Tottenham included) are losing 'because of Coronavirus.' These clubs are businesses in the end, but seriously, if everyone's in the same boat, who cares? The footballing world has gone pretty crazy over the past 4-5 years, so maybe this is the incredibly bizarre scenario where it gets brought back to Earth a tad. Shame it took a horrible pandemic to do it, but here we are. In the grand scheme of things, football clubs losing millions really means shit to me.

I'm sure you'd feel different if you were a staff member of the club, perhaps working in the IT team or one the catering staff. You might also feel different in you were a kid growing up in Tottenham (or other cub City/area) and getting some meaning from your life out of the community outreach programs that the club provides.

Just because there are circa. 25-30 people at a club who are getting paid obscene amounts of money, doesn't take away from the fact that the club is much bigger than this and personally impacts a lot of other people in many different ways.

Looks like to restart June 20

There was chat the other day they might start the games with our match v Man U.

But as they still haven’t organised where these games will be allowed to be played who knows where it will take place.

Didn’t the clubs overwhelmingly vote for playing normal home and away?

You’re absolutely spot on, and I can understand that viewpoint entirely. This pandemic has impacted so many people, and it goes way beyond football club’s bottom lines. My comment is based primarily in the clubs stating their loss in revenue, and really just focusing on that. Not necessarily what that has meant for the surrounding communities and staff. Right now, despite everything going on in the world, many of these clubs in the Premier League are only focused on their revenue, and these articles, where they moan about the money they’ve lost (not the staff, communities, etc.) seem pretty disingenuous to me. It’s also the big reason for the push to get back to football when it seems generally unsafe and not really to the advantage of much (bar for maybe a handful) of the lower level club/match day staff.

Not just the past 4-5 years. Clubs in English football have been spending money that doesn't exist for decades now. Look at the farce with ITV Digital - a lot of clubs spent their share of the TV money before they received it so were absolutely screwed once ITV Digital collapsed. The bubble football lives in has been around for sometime now and those in charge seem to refuse to accept that one day it's going to burst.

Can’t wait for football to be back. This whole thing has been so awful and it’s going to provide a big lift.

What say we to a premier league announcement tomorrow to change the news cycle?
They just announced two more positive cases from the latest round of testing. I think that’s the only announcement we’ll get this weekend

A few details on that. No word on which clubs involved. Obviously none of our players will end up testing positive until the week before the games and be ruled out, knowing our luck.

Out of interest if the home games were played at WHL is there anyone on here that would try and go to be near the ground? If that starts happening it will cause problems but I was wondering if anyone would still do this even if against advice?
