why is he not a dm?
He us industrious, he tackles well but needs to be focused on the one thing but he has a tendency to want to expand a game. We need a tough no nonsense DM.
Skipp is too valuable in centre. Winks for me and most people don't agree is just an average player. He has had so. Much opportunity to be so much more but he plays to contained for a CM and not tough enough as a DM.

well we don't really know what he's being asked to do and the last game he was paired with ndombele who wasn't really showing for the ball so i guess skipp felt the onus was on him to try and get the play moving.

you've just said that he's industrious and tackles well, that's two pretty important components for a dm. also look at how he positions himself off the ball and is constantly scanning around/behind him for danger, his first instinct is always a defensive one. i think he gets typecast as a winks type because he's a similar height/build and came through the academy but he's much more defensively alert than winks. 95% of his youth career has been as a defensive midfielder and he's even played at cb more than as a #8, once he grows a bit more physically i think people will accept him more in that role.

I don't compare him to Winks at all. He us much more proactive than Winks. Winks always waits to see what us happening, Skipp is ahead of that.
I just feel that the DM should be stronger and tougher than Skipp or Winks

I don't deny he likes to pick the ball up from deep and certainly seems to enjoy the defensive side of the game but he will and I think wants to find himself higher up the pitch linking play and that player can certainly have their defensive capabilities but I don't see him in that role per se. I suppose that's what I saying.

People are talking like we have a new Modric on our hands and he is not even proven he is the new Winks at this moment in time .
Why not stop with the hyperbole and give the man a chance to make his own way by stop putting so much expectation on him.

Don't think a single person has said he is on the same level as Modric.

Are you reading a different thread than me or did you just fancy a moan?

Excellent use of his body to shield the ball, sometimes without even touching it.

Very strong physically for a youngster.

Stronger and tougher? That doesn't mean a better DM. Ndidi and Kante are perfect examples of this.

He's ok...not been overly impressed by what Ive seen, but useful to keep in the squad I suppose as he's English. Would prefer an upgrade though, but there are more important people to ship out.

I don't think there's any question that we need a DM. But i've seen more than enough from Skipp to say that he absolutely deserves to be part of the squad going forward, and to play 20 or so games a season.

Of course it doesn't mean a better DM. But if the artists are all going forward it would help

my apologies, I should’ve elaborated a bit. I think Skipp has the right attributes to be a good DM for us. Low center of gravity, can pick a pass decently and has a defensive mindset.

But the most important thing he has is situational awareness. This is the defining attribute of a really good DM. Kante,Ndidi, Fabinho, Rice etc all have exceptional awareness of the game.

This is what we need, and yes Skipp can be upgraded on at the moment however he can grow into that role too so it’s a catch 22.

I agree with your view. Skipp awareness I'd seen since the first games he played (on the tour I think) its just I like the way he moves forward through the lines, him staying back seems a waste..Thats why more of a dominant tough player would have been good while industrious players move the ball forward but I agree with Skipp talent and his ability to tackle even. He is fluid. Though he always seems to have an eye to move up.
Van Dyke though in the back line has the type of physical power for instance that would be the ideal type as a DM (of course not him)

This. If Winks is good enough to be a first team regular then Skipp is certainly good enough to have a strong presence in the squad IMO.

Skipp has potential. We don't know yet how far he will go but from day one there were signs.
Winks is a steady player. Guaranteed steady. But unless when he comes back starts to own a position,is limited. He will always get a job. If we want top 4 every year then we need players that can make an impact and a difference.
