A player who has impressed me a lot in just two matches is Jordan Hackett playing at LB, very early days but he looks such a intelligent player who makes all the right runs with or without the ball and he is also a athletic player with good pace.

I missed a few of the recent u18s matches but I'd like to second this. Hackett is a really good player and while, due to his size I thought he'd be a great CB, seeing as he started out there, as he's excellent wit the ball at his feet, he is also clearly an excellent LB too though I initially thought he looked awkward there but it's also his favourite position.

He was actually highlighted as a standout alongside Byone-Gittens from a fan that was at the recent tournament who was there to watch the USA. England were described as more skilful, creative and technical than the Spanish team

Is it really ? As a club we’ve been ahead of Arsenal for 4 years but our youth is well behind. Kane Winks Townsend only really talents in 10 years. I know he has a great reputation, but do the facts really show that.

It is hard to know. Maybe we need a reboot at youth level. He has been in the job a long time.

We need to expand the academy and aggressively scout and acquire young talent to build a youth setup to rival the Scum, City, Wolves and the like. Losing the shining light in our present setup is not a good way to start that process.
Or could it be that McDermott has also become disillusioned with the changes in personell and the club's lack of ambition?

This. There’s absolutely no reason we shouldn’t match Chelsea academy now.

When the only evidence of a player being good enough has been whether the manager uses them; I can understand to most this won't seem like much of a loss. I imagined that most people would think like this and it's impossible for me to reason you or anyone out of that position.

But for anyone who's watched the academy and knows about youth football in England they'll know this is a huge loss. My evidence is seeing the level of player he's produced consistently over the last 10 years, the emergence of England youth teams in general as a dominant force with a heavy contribution from our club, the emergence of top coaches from our club getting poached by big clubs and the FA especially and finally the FA getting their hands on the man that did it all. He will be a huge miss and has done so much, unfortunately not many people got to see his work or appreciate it. We became one of the top academies in the world under him and while in recent times we lost out on talent or talent left us, we remain one of the best in England still.

Hopefully someone will be able to step in and fill the void.

He has been a very good servant to the club and done a huge amount of work here, but I've made a few posts wondering if it's time for a change/reset/something different tbf - though McDermott would only be one part of that and it requires an even more strategic outlook across the whole club and resources thrown into the academy. Properly focus on one way of playing through the club and develop players who are more in tune with what is required at first team level. For all the good work that has been done I cant sit here and say that we've always been producing players that look in tune with how we're playing in the first team.

There was little point in McDermott staying once Mourinho joined. A manager whom likes to buy the ready made article goes against everything McDermott was endorsing.

Listen to What he is saying because it makes a lot of sense.

First time I’ve heard him speak and what’s so annoying about losing him is that he sounds like a clever articulate lad. I doubt there’s that many about at his age who speak so clearly about their and the game. On top of his ability of course.

He just saw no chance with us.

Be interesting how much of an influence Mourinho has if any at all. Could be a difficult appointment. Most would think/accept that Mourinho is the polar opposite of everything we stand for in regards to youth policy. Yet they will have to appoint someone with a long term vision who will also get on with Mourinho. Also be interesting if we go British or foreign. I would guess it’s a hugely attractive job to many even quite high profile ex players.

chance they’d bring Sherwood back ?
