a solid keeper breathes life into the defence and those in front of him. not all hugo's fault but the entire team is walking on eggshells right now. been a problem area for a while imo.

His form over the past 18 months has been a real worry. And whilst I'm obviously grateful to him for sticking through the AVB/Sherwood years and for bailing us out of trouble many times over his career, the fact is the errors are creeping more and more regularly into his game, and most worryingly of all, these appear to be coming not in the games against weaker sides where we have a two or three goal cushion or are likely to fight our way back into the match - they are coming with alarming regularity in big games that cost us important points. Off the top of my head:

  • Liverpool - Yesterday's last minute howler.

  • Man City - both games last season, one where Sterling nutmegged him at the Etihad, then he gave away a penalty in the home game. Seem to remember some ridiculous missed diving header there a couple of years ago too.

  • Chelsea - Both games last season, first when he let a simple shot from Alonso slip through him to give them the winner at Wembley, then he completely missed a cross for Morata to score at Stamford Bridge. There was also this season's debacle with the Pedro near post shot and then Trippier's own goal which probably wasn't all Hugo's fault to be fair but still looked ridiculous.

  • Barcelona - Inexplicably charged out of his goal when they were going out wide to allow Coutinho to tap into an empty net in the first minute, destroyed our game plan.

  • PSV - 2-1 up away from home and cruising to our first CL win of the season - then Lloris charges out of goal, gets himself sent off and we concede.

  • Man Utd - Felt he should have saved Rashford's winner at Wembley.

The World Cup final - Got away with it as France were clearly the better side, however that was arguably the biggest goalkeeper fuck-up ever in a WC final.

Yes the Aubameyang penalty save and the Dortmund masterclass was great, but games like that are becoming all too rare compared with the number of big mistakes he's making at crucial moments of big games. It's so sad to see because he has been unquestionably our best keeper since at least Thorstvedt, if not Clemence, however people are going to remember him more for this kind of crap if it carries on than the match winning performances we used to associate him with.

Would be a huge decision to drop him now though. To drop our captain and one of our longest serving players for the opening game at the new stadium with the Champions League game to follow would be a colossal fuck you to him. If we did and it Gazzaniga doesn't work out in those games then we've effectively killed two keepers careers in one go. It's definitely something Poch should consider, and even more so in the summer if anyone is available, but the timing now is bad...

Following on from those errors that I listed when I last posted in this thread, we can now add to this:

  • Southampton - Cryuff turned it into his own net

  • Brighton - Fumbled a cross to concede an early goal and injure himself badly in the process

  • Norwich (league game) - went the right way for Pukki's penalty but his hand wasn't strong enough to keep it out

  • Chelsea - Beaten at his near post by Giroud for the opening goal

  • Burnley - Spilt the ball for Wood to score the opening goal

  • Leipzig - Conceded two more early goals from shots that he reached but let the ball slip past him

It's a real shame, as Hugo has given us some massive performances over the years has been with us for a long time, but there has to come a point where we say enough is enough. Every game he appears to tarnish his reputation further - he's probably made more mistakes leading to goals since returning from injury two months ago than he did in his first two or three seasons with the club in total. It's not a short term thing though, he's been poor for the best part of three years now, ever since that drink driving incident things appear to be getting worse and not better.

Sad to say it - but IMO a new goalkeeper is fast changing from a luxury signing to one that is at least as important as the other "urgent" signings at full-back, CB and DM that we need to make this summer. People underestimate just how important a world class goalkeeper actually is - we started off quite well tonight but any sort of tactical game plan can go to shit if you have a keeper that lets things through his hands and the players' heads all start to drop. Whether we have the budget for all of those signings, especially if we don't get CL football, looks unrealistic to me though.

I’ll give you 4 of those 6 being Hugo at fault and I agree we’ve seen a slight downturn in his consistency since the drink driving incident

Still doesn’t look right to me since his last injury. Those saves tonight he'd push to safety when he’s 100% but 2/3 times he couldn’t parry them away to safety

We can wish for a new keeper all we like.
Its not going to happen. Hes the club captain, and we arent getting rid any time soon.

Yes he makes saves that are out of this world, but also has nights like tonight where he didnt have a terrible performance, but those moments make or break your chances.

Jose generally likes a lanky streak of piss in the sticks, these errors give him the ammunition to get shot and bring someone who fits the mould

The errors he made tonight may not look glaring, but a really top drawer keeper doesn’t concede either of those

Could someone explain to Hugo that the staying on your line rule is just for penalties.

He was renowned for being a sweeper keeper, but he rarely ventures outside the 6 yard box, let alone the penalty area.

Ramsdale at Bournemouth might be worth a punt - he is young but has been great despite being in a crap defence.

Got this feeling that Levy will pounce on bournmouth players when they get relegated

Very likely yes. Especially Aké - but also Cook, Brooks, King/Wilson could be options. We're in a situation where we also have to consider home grown status. We've also been linked with several Norwich players: Aarons, Godfrey, Lewis, Cantwell. Idah another from them.
Then there's of course Grealish from Villa, but it seems he's United bound.
