I think someone mentioned earlier that he looks better when we have other focal points. If Harry is playing defences aren’t quite on Dele as much and he can make some of those late runs and be more dangerous.

We need to work more as a team to create other problems for opposition defences and make more spaces for Dele. He’ll miss some goals and be frustrating but he’s still our best chance to bag a couple of goals in a game if we can get him the opportunities.

Alli is a one off, his goals and assists for two seasons showed he can compete with the best but unlike world class players Alli requires the team to play to his strengths. He flourished whenever he had Kane and Eriksen around him, we had a rock in midfield in Dembele and two flying full backs. These days we’re missing all of the aforementioned players.

We won’t see the best of Ndombele, Fernandes and Lo Celso until next season when Jose has had a summer to work with them and get their fitness up to the required standard. Lo Celso is playing very well but he also missed a couple of months out with injury.

Next season we’ll also have a fully fit Kane, Son, a settled Bergwijn and hopefully another couple of reinforcements.

However, for Alli to regain his form of a few years ago it is vital that we sign two quick attack minded full backs. Having a peak Rose and Walker allowed Kane, Alli, Eriksen and Son to cause havoc. With our current full backs we have zero attacking intent from Davies and Aurier is way too inconsistent.

Should we not rectify the full back issue then I struggle to sign how Alli fits into the team as it leaves us light in central midfield and lop sided up top. He needs space and to be instinctive to succeed but until we sort out our squad (in the summer) he’s a square peg in a round hole and playing him is to the detriment of the team. Albeit a different player we saw how the likes of Llorente struggled in the EPL as we failed to play to his strengths. Tripps was our only player who could cross the ball but he couldn’t defend for toffee, Davies was too slow to make it up the field and Rose has always been woeful in the final 3rd.

For me, we either play Alli as a make shift striker or use him as an impact player.

To me he is a player that does great things instinctively but the rest of his game when that instinct doesn't kick in seems forced and lethargic.

If he wants to be a more rounded player I feel he needs to simplify his game, moving the ball quicker with less touches and let those instinctive moments take care of the rest.

That’s fair, unfortunately we are playing with a system that relies on individual brilliance to get goals. He is being required to do things that just aren’t natural to his skill set.

Good post.

Alli certainly thrives when the team around him suits his strengths. A striker who can hold the ball up and a playmaker to make the passes for Alli's runs into the box.

This certainly shows Alli's limitations but many top quality players have limitations, especially at his age.

Christ, he’s 23. He’s had a rough few seasons and now he’s also learning under a new manager.

You don’t just loose the talent that he has. He’ll come good again.

All the great players needed great players around them. Not saying Ali is or isn’t great but sometimes I feel fans believe that a great player makes everyone else great but really these great players need other great players around them to see them at the very very best.
Right at this moment Ali is one of our best players playing who isn't injured while everyone else has moved on [Dembele, Walker, Rose, Eriksen] has got older or crocked [JV, Wanyama] is injured at the moment [Kane. Son] or hasn't settled in yet [GLC, Bergwijn, Ndombele]
I don't think he needs A side built around him I don’t remember at any time the side being constructed around Ali there was other good players on the pitch. But I don't see how were going to see Ali at his best until we get back to a settled side fully fit and firing

Alli and Mourinho always felt to me like a relationship that wouldn’t last.

Mourinho started out with the OTT praise and comparisons with Lampard were mooted. Fast forward a few months and he’s playing shit again and acting like a child when he gets subbed for playing shit.

I’ll be surprised if this goes anything but badly for Alli from this point on.

Agree and hope your right. I just want us to stop relying on him as a key player.

Nope, I refuse to even recall what being a 23 year old was like and I am going to treat this particular 23 year old like he should be playing to my levels of expectation at ALL TIMES. If he doesn't I will turn on him quicker than you can blink, I will sell him to Norwich for a packet of Monster Munch, I will refuse to implement even the tiniest understanding of circumstance to try and fathom why a dip in form and confidence might happen and just put my fingers in my ears and call some 23-year-old kid out on an internet forum cos he played badly for bit.

Alli needs players to vibe with, he doesn't really have that at the moment. Lucas doesn't vibe with anyone, for all his skill and effort he either does it alone or not at all.

A great player lifts everyone. Players make runs for them as they know he is not giving the ball away and will pass to them.
He doesn't throw tantrums when another player couldn't see what a clever position he'd found themselves in. He is talking and encouraging - even pointing to where the ball should be played as he can see how the play is developing.
I'm thinking VdV, Lineker, Klinsmann - all past their very best with us, but vastly better than nearly everyone else. They made ordinary players around them believe in themselves.

Dele has a fair amount of premiership, european and international experience now and has a great opportunity for the rest of the season to score some goals and get the headlines - as it stands he can't be sure of his England place this summer.
And if he is to become a great, it should be coming together for him now, as a player's career is not a long one.

That was when no one knew who dele alli was. Defense werent as tight and he had his time to operate. Now they know what to do to take away his game. If he wants to one up the defense then he needw to add something to his game

Honestly, watch some games - no-one marks Dele, he isn't pressed; he plays into trouble.

He needs to do what he does best and play off the shoulder of central defenders - he'd score a shit load of goals because timing off the ball is his outstanding attribute. Trouble is, he thinks he's better with the ball at his feet.

I reckon Mourinho's instructions on Wednesday were to do just that; play off the defenders and get in behind. Jose is quickly realising Dele is uncoachable because he's obviously not following tactical plays.

He'll be for sale in the Summer and will link up brilliantly with Troy Deeney to keep them up.
