Why is the only option for playing 'attacking' football having someone that can "hold up the ball", what are we still in the 90's? I did not see Werner having to hold up the ball once those 90 minutes. Neither does Vardy, Aguero, Rashford. I could go on. These are all pacey and players that are either good in the box (Aguero) or are pacey & like going behind the CBs. The problem starts well ahead of who is playing as a striker. It's the entire mentality of the team, the system and how we're set up. Listen to him moan all week about how we're more or less completely shot. Just now after the game as well. Talking like we're this massive underdog that just HAD to sit back and 'fight'. This is glorified Allardyce-talk.

It’s far more than “holding up the ball” though Isn’t it?

Watch how the whole opposition defence gets pulled around when Harry K is playing.

It makes a huge difference to the options the other attackers and attacking mids have. It changes the whole shape of the game.

It‘s not “Allardyce talk” to try to recognise reality. It’s fucking hard to adjust to playing with no regular striker and a greatly diminished goal threat, especially when most players have never had to play like that for a whole game at any team they’ve ever been in.

It will take time. And we showed a huge improvement after an hour. The team deserves credit for that.

I don’t think it’s just JM or the next big thing we may or may not be able to land. I think there’s some serious dysfunction at the recruitment/ footballing management aspect of the club that goes beyond the possible shortcomings of any manager
There is and there has been no matter the manager or scouts. There’s one common denomenator. Dear Leader.

He outran everybody on the pitch despite playing half hour less, he didnt have a good game but as I said he wasnt any worse than anybody else which shows we didnt approach it right, he was trying to make things happen here and there like on the stroke of half time one of our only 2 good plays in the first half. I didnt see him doing any shithousery things on the pitch

The hate for Dele is a bit silly. The bloke is working harder than anyone in the team running his guts out to provide movement and options. He's clearly passionate and wants to be on the pitch even if that slips into appearing petulant at times.

Things aren't finishing for him at the moment but he's the only who looks like making proper goal scoring chances.

Hopefully things will turn for him soon finishing wise.

Normally I wouldn’t be this positive but a second leg against a fancied but young side who could and should have put some daylight between us in this first leg... with us coming on stronger at the end... if anyone can make shithouse lightning strike twice it’s Mourinho...

On the flip side, it’s so predictable the striker situation would bite us on the arse but that’s our Danny boy..

But surely as entertainment, a hard watch is something to be avoided in football? It's not like we have steam of cloggers who can't play positive attractive football. Just a manager who prefers not to.
Yep don’t disagree with that at all. I’ve supported spurs 30 years and seen us win 2 cups so I’m personally ok to try to grin and bare this for the rest of this season and see how the first half of next goes hopefully with investment in the squad and our players back, if it’s the same story then, then sure I’d like a new man to come in who can get us playing football again as this isn’t how we are used to playing and it most certainly isn’t entertaining you’re correct :(

I’m more optimistic than most of you seem to be.

Seeing how we played for the last 25 minutes was genuinely exciting, especially taking into account the injuries to two of our best players and attacking threats.

If we had a striker on the pitch to take advantage of our midfield’s creativity and control, and to pull their defence a bit more out of shape in the way HK does better than anyone, a lot of those moves would have resulted in the “clear chances” that JJ complained about us not making.

But of all the tactical problems we understandably moanEd about over the first hour, I saw enough in the last half-hour to make me feel we‘re slowly becoming a far better team than we have been for a year or more.

Basically, I can’t wait for next season to start!
Agreed, I’m strangely confident about the return leg. However, I feel that to get the best out of what we have, JM needs to push Dele up into the false 9 position, play him like Klopp uses Firminho. It would allow him to drop into space, potentially pull a centre half out of position and lay in the diagonal balls, behind the fullbacks, that the likes of Moura and Bergwijn would thrive off with their pace.

Moura is the type of forward that needs to be running into the ball to finish, coming in from wide. Playing Dele as a false 9 would allow him to drop those balls in between the CH and fullback, forcing them to turn when our wide forwards are running into the ball to finish. For me this utilises the 3 front men to the best of their abilities.

Then play 3 across the middle, Winks, Lo Celso and, if he’s fit, Ndombele. The back 4 could stay the same, but I’d be tempted to play Tanganga on the left. Davies is a little rusty though, so he should be a fair bit sharper in 3 weeks time, leaving Tanganga as a bench option covering both fullbacks and even CH should he be required.
Lamela is then our bench @game changer” option, as his introduction tonight certainly changed the momentum.

I see the above as our most balanced formation, allowing us a certain solidity in the middle, with a more creative dynamic up front.

I do hope JM goes along those lines, but regardless, I’m feeling strangely confident that we’ll get a result over there.

Ambition in terms of actually trying to string several passes together and score rather than sit deep and punt it long.
Only play with the players he has at his disposal. He won't just play pointless possession based football with no outcome. Weekend proved that.

Didn't say pointless possession, just that we should use the midfield which has our best player GLC . Hitting it long is not using the players at our disposal moura and son are rubbish in the air and holding the ball up. If you are going to counter it should be through the midfield with quick forward passes (not hoofs)

Weekend proved that we are still playing shit but fluking the wins. This will end.

We played shit over the weekend? We had spells where if we had put away the chances we created, Villa wouldn't have had a sniff. You could do with watching the football more and talking in less hyperbole.

English clubs play wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much ‘competitive’ football in a season.
Cups, replays, European, Premier League...and when you’ve picked up key injuries (especially a big man who can header) the odds are massively stacked against you.
Leipzig played with real zip and pace for the first 60 minutes.
Spurs played the last 45 on pure adrenaline and heart. Shattered, but still pressing forward.

Spurs need to pick a more aggressive team to start a game.
Get the upper hand. Get an early goal. And then feed off the elevated optimism.

Playing safe, playing defensively...if you go a goal behind, can be utterly exhausting especially on exhausted legs.
Mourinho needs to adjust his team selection. Quickly.

Bring on the insults. If you can't win the argument then attack my apparent lack of knowledge. Hyperbole? Not sure you know the meaning of the word in my opinion we were rubbish at the weekend and needed a last minute defensive mistake to win, against Aston villa.

Main criticism of Jose is he should have gambled and started one of Lamela or Tanguy tonight

mom assuming he didn’t because, and it’s a fucking farce especially with ndombele, he doesn’t know how long they can last.
