Saying "Dele should have taken a yellow " is answered by Jose who said " Dele could not risk a yellow to tackle Bertrand as it would have resulted in a ban due to amount of cards he had up to now " I am paraphrasing but you get the idea .
I just rewatched the match and tho outplayed I was surprised how many guilt edged chances we had plus several situations where one good pass by Moura or Son and we would have been thru on goal really its weird we were outplayed but could have scored 3 or 4 more goals.

Just watched the game again, I'd add that the last 20 minutes WE were the superior team and Saints really had run out of steam - being reduced to making professional fouls.

Thought Gedson looked bright, and Dele did a good job in the final third, causing them problems - so good subs to call on and use. Sess not too bad.

Going back to the first 60 mins, NDombele was actually very good if a little unfit, but was clutching his side because he had his clock cleaned earlier in the match - nasty knock. He's really talented, just hope he sticks around and realises his full potential with us.

Even though we played seemingly poorly in the couple of games, it's a joy to watch us after finally shipping out some dead wood. Things had gone so stale and although we are strikerless at the moment I love having a team of new faces and skillsets to appreciate and appraise - my interest is BACK. Tanganga & Tanguy, Lo Celso, Sess, Bergwijn, Gedson. Hell, Winks is starting to look like a new man. It's refreshing, and hopefully the start of something with José rather than fait accompli.

Maybe give JM a bit of time to work with the players. You do know that Southampton with the same manager was in the relegation zone recently. He was given time and now you think he’s great. Give JM the same amount of time before you write him off

Agreed.

Saints are playing well and off the front foot.

We need to give Jose a Summer to build on the January transfer window that he's just had. For sure he knows our defensive issues and the fact that we need a good DM.

Until then it's ll about riding this season out as well as we can, my only true concern being NDombele who i think has flattered to deceive so far, i truly cannot believe he can be so far off the pace.

Really like his honesty and analysis.

I like that he talks about starting Ndombele even though he knows he won't last 90 minutes. To get up to match fitness it's much better to do this and hook the player off when thet're out of gas than give them 15-20 minutes at the end. After all, it's still 1 substitution even though it is inevitable.

If we had played with the determination and fire we showed after their second goal in the first hour they would not have had the freedom to pass the ball around like they did. We didn't look up for at all in the first half and looked like going out. However if we can play the rest of the season the way we played the last 20 minutes then we have a chance of achieving something this year even if it's only 4th place.

You have to hand it to JM he is a master at controlling media opportunities to get his message across, at the moment every excuse so wins are seen as genius at work against all odds. However it is true that he has been with us for very little time, has had to deal was a squad in transition, loss of form, loss of confidence and key injuries. The malaise set in 12 months ago needs time to turn around and his way is the classic one of stopping the flow of goals against. It is how most good teams have been built, remember for two years we had the best defence. What I do know is we have the attacking quality to hurt any opposition so I hope this is what JM is up to.
Agree, and I was actually surprised to see that since he took over, only City and Liverpool have accrued more points than us in the league.

quite a few areas that give a bit of glimmer to next season

I was screaming at the TV last night for one decent pass. There were so many opportunities to hurt them. And we fuck 90% of them. I know we won. But I hate the fact that both Moura. And even more so Son. Feel the need to take the extra touch or go for goal. Rather than find a decent easy ball to a player in space. Really annoys me. It’s not playing for the team. And then. When son. Finally played a player in (Aurier). He gave it back to him rather than shoot. If be going scatty if I was manager.

and it was noticeable when Dele came on. He started to move the ball

And lost 9-0 to Leicester earlier in the season too.

Football fans always fixate on individuals rather than the team or tactics when things go wrong.

All problems are to be solved with a new signing or playing/substituting squad player x. It's a simple misplaced conclusion.

Dembele was a massive loss for us. But cannot be the reason we are incapable of stringing half a dozen passes together now. Yet we used to dominate game after game after game with 70% of possession with largely the same set of players.

I genuinely think mentality we have become jaded and demoralises with all the near misses and 'glorious' failures and we need to somehow escape the mental malaise we have found ourselves in. I'm not sure how we escape that.
I disagree. We are missing some crucial parts of what poch's team so effective. Walker and rose were the best fullbacks in the league and gave us energy and pace on the flanks which gave us width.
Dembele could receive the ball under any pressure. It got to a point where players didn't even bother really closing him down because they knew that it was pointless. He gave us complete control of the midfield in the vast majority of games.
Kane holds the ball up fantastically well and brings others into the game. Without him we just cannot penetrate the final third with control.
Vertonghen and Aldweireld were in their prime and the best pairing in the league. Both fantastic on the ball which again gave us control when transitioning from defense to midfield.

These are crucial parts of the team and losing them cannot be underestimated. Jose is building a different kind of team with different kinds of players. I think that given time he will build an excellent team. I must say that I have been really impressed with how flexible and clever he is as a manager. He has masked the weaknesses on our squad in really creative ways and while we haven't yet begun to put in dominant performances, you can at least see an improvement in our shape and certainly in our results.

I honestly think lo celso will be our new Dembele/Eriksen hybrid. He has it all. And a bit of nastiness as well. Big things expected.

Agreed. What is extraordinary is how he seems to have flicked a performance switch in a couple of weeks. He used to come on for about 15-20 minutes and not do too much - maybe a few decent passes and a bit of energy. Now responsibility of pulling the strings in midfield seems to have been handed to him and he seems to have embraced It fully. Too early to applaud? Perhaps. But the signs are very good indeed. Jose seems to have given him confidence

He had only just arrived when he got injured playing for Argentina. All that time, during the first half of the season, when he would have been introduced to English football in a measured way and ratcheted up his fitness level to cope with it, he was recovering from injury. Once he was properly fit at last, no longer than a few weeks ago, he started to play with less hesitancy and more freedom. That's when we started to see his quality.

You can't hesitate in the Premiership. A tenth of a second is enough to lose the ball and kill the move.

What has playing the "spurs way" got us? We sound like West Ham fans demanding a style of football that gives us nothing and we subsequently don't deserve!

You can see Mourinho is dealing with trying to make the team gel, that's going to take time but there are signs of better work between the players in glimpses. Give them and Mourinho time and you never know we might actually win something!

You find a balance no need to go to either of the extremes

Bit off topic but fair play to Danny Ings too, actually seems like a pretty decent guy. Saw him give a few warm handshakes at the end, telling Lucas his goal was nice and running to shake the hand of Lloris too, plus I think he was one who was consoling Sessegnon when he was a bit worried about Prowse and you see him talking to the centre backs at periods too.

Also I said to my dad the other day, that performance for most of the game was unacceptable regardless, but Saints I think had pretty much their full strength team out unless I'm mistaken. It could have been a very different game had we had Sissoko, Bergwijn, Lo Celso, Lamela, Kane and Dele fully fit and possibly starting.

Just watched the match through for the first time I totally agree with you. From what others said it seemed as though Son and Moura were useless but they played really well with little support. The pattern of our play recently is for us to defend in numbers and use the pace of our attackers to break away and cause the opposition problems. The long balls we hit turn the defenders against us so that they have to run back to their goal, allowing us to get back into defensive shape. Seems like a strategy to do this and hold back all out attack until the last twenty minutes
