As I've said though, it's not nice to see but I don't get why we're still giving him any minutes. Every game he plays is a game less for Sanchez at centre back, or Tanganga, or Dier, or Foyth, or the next academy kid off the rank. If they get more minutes we/Jose might learn a bit more about them, during what is still a transitional period for us, where we shouldn't be afraid of testing the options we have, and if they have a future or if we need to buy. With Jan, we unfortunately know what the answer is.

Sad to see jan like that. Hes been a fantastic player for us. For all we go on about the relationships we have with our club and players, I think it's really sad that we rarely say goodbye to players, and they to us, in a way that befits the way they have served the club.

Jan has been one of our very best players for a long long time and I really hope that he gets the kind of send off that he deserves.

I also hope he realises just how much we appreciate him.

He was a rising defender and came to us, spent his prime with us through the years. I hope we support him right through the end of his time with us. Proper legend.

I wonder if that's his last game for us? Sad if it was as he's been brilliant over the years. If he really wants to stay with us it might be time to start on his coaching badges.

sad to watch the walk-off and deep in thought on the bench, what a player he's been for us

Looks like he was contemplating whether he has anything left to give (and not just us)

I thought he could turn it around but the legs just aren't there it seems. :(

Whether he's winding down or just needs a break, he'll always be Super Jan.

Give him a couple of weeks off then just see how he gets on with some of the pressure off. He had the weight of the world on his mind on the bench, power on, big man.

Mourinho on Vertonghen
“No injury. I had a feeling in the first half that I needed to change to a back four but it was a question of waiting to be able to bring on Dele. Like a chess game with no bishops or kings. Missing so many pieces. I had to change and I decided to leave Tanganga and Toby, a bit faster and better to cope with space. I sacrificed Jan. So sad but happy now.”

If someone puts together a clip of Jan coming off and sitting on the bench, to the titanic music...
I'm not crying, you're crying!

Completely shocked how fast it's hit him this season, after last season I thought he had another 3-4 years in him with his cerebral, technical approach to the game.

Hope the fans send him off properly.

I hope we win a trophy this season, obviously for us, and the club, but also so Jan can walk off into the sunset with a winners medal which would be fitting for his great service to the club.

Super Jan Vertonghen!
