Spending so much on koulibaly seems like a desperate fix to a much larger problem.
Any team with our combination of full backs and lightweight midfield would concede goals regardless of cb personnel.
Would rather focus on full back replacements and a dm. We can use foyth, tanganga, dier, Toby and sanchez for cb.
Agree we have more pressing concerns, but I think if you can get someone of the level of Koulibaly you just do it regardless of your current squad. He’s just that good. You look at how players at Liverpool who were considered good but not spectacular (Matip, Henderson, Robertson etc.) who have improved their games tenfold thanks to the presence and performances of Van Dijk. Koulibaly doesn’t have immensely high quality around him at Napoli and he’s still considered the second best centre half in the world. He’d improve us no end of we were to get him.

Do not believe when JM says he doesn’t want any players etc, and will find options within! He has made it extremely plain to the hierarchy what he wants this window. Latest ITK via dova et el, is on the money. I am like the pessimist on here, who has heard it all before.

If Koulibaly is available and wants us, go get him. I don't care if he's not a priority position for a signing, he's a Van Dijk esque signing that will immediately improve us 10 fold. Absolute world class player.

It would be a fix, and a quality one. At just twenty eight we should see four or five good seasons from him?

Great piece of ITK, thanks!

But are any of the players we'd want in those positions available now?

If Koulibaly is available now and can improve us we'd be stupid to ignore the possibility of signing him, especially as Jose has been after him for years.
Of course, but he's not a magic bullet that will fix all our problems. I said it would be a good start but we've been burnt before with optimism so i'll remain reserved until there is actual progression squad-wide. Prob won't bring him in though so will in all likelihood be a moot point

We will have to see, but you don't appoint Jose and expect not to spend. I've heard nothing on this one, but JM was always going to want high profile in their prime targets.

I hope Levy is ready for the bite back from Mourinho if he doesn't deliver on his targets. It will go sour very quickly, especially if the team continues to struggle to implement his ideas.

He'd make us more aggressive and he's a big presence to have at the back. So it's a good start.

The DM issue is leading us to concede more but a domineering CB can help in this regard. None of our CBs are a presence. Jan has always had problems with strong attackers, Toby is more of a ball playing CB whereas Sanchez gets rolled a bit too easily but could grow into being a presence. Koulibaly would scare attackers and give those around him confidence. We would still need a DM to make it tight and take pressure off but it's a start.

IF KK signs do folks see the CB group of 4 looking like this:
KK, Sanchez and Toby +Tanganga and Foyth (with one of these two out on loan).
Jan leaves the club

I agree completely. I had mixed feelings regarding JM incoming for exactly these reasons. If Levy has appointed him to coach through the youth he's an idiot, as that's not what he does. The general feeling is he'll be backed. Levy has wanted Jose for years, so he must be aware of his mo and adjust his transfer strategy accordingly.

Only time will tell though.

That's what I've been thinking too and its why I believe the Koulibaly links. Levy isn't an idiot and Mourinho wouldn't of taken the job if there was no money to spend.

On the money.
We'll see the old Mourhino in February if he isn't backed.

There is no way Mourinho isn't getting backed.

Levy knows full well what Mourinho expects, even demands.

All of this would of been discussed prior to his appointment.

The KK links do not surprise me at all. Ready to go world class CB. If he wants us its an absolute no brainier.

A DM and RB next up, be it now or in the summer.

Thanks Trix (and Herc)

You'd like to think that (i) JM has taken a long hard look at what we need before taking the Spurs job and (ii) told Levy who these players are

For Levy then not to back him and get his targets would be mental...especially since our beloved leader is paying JM 15m quid a year (or whatever)

My wish for the new year is that Levy finally hires a proper DoF so that we can find some consistency and a proper plan in our transfer dealings.

This from Jose today was interesting:
“The world doesn’t end at the end of this season. The end of the season is just the end of the first period. I watched Liverpool last night and Jürgen [Klopp] arrived in October 2015 – eight transfer windows, lots of players leaving, lots of players coming and even more important than that, time for him to put his philosophy, his training methods, his fingerprint. Beautiful results as a consequence of fantastic work, step-by-step, phase-by-phase.”
