Well you have to say it was because this is the 3rd time Bulgaria have been done for racism and we're just now on the stage of minor fines and 2 games behind closed doors, brilliant.

Let's face it if UEFA were serious about racism they would have escalated this ages ago, unfortunately they are apart of the problem, how many times do we need to have this conversation about UEFA's punishment's, they do nothing. It should never get to a stage where players are thinking of walking off the pitch in order to highlight the abuse, I don't care what rules are in place, it's just disgraceful.

When there's riots and protests people tend to take note, not saying that should happen but there's a reason why they happen, it's because the authorities aren't doing enough.
I agree, I just don't think a walkout on this occasion was required and wouldn't have achieved anything.

It's gonna happen one day and you'll see the reaction.
What I would hope is countries approach UEFA before the games and make it clear the refs are fully drilled on what action to take if racist abuse occurs in the stands. Then make it clear if their own regulations aren't followed then walk outs will occur.

If England players walked off, it would have made international waves. Everyone would have been talking about it. Not just the footballing world. UEFA & FIFA would have been forced to come down hard on it. That is the point. It would have achieved a hell of a lot more than playing the game achieved which was nothing.

Yes I get that but we can't just do that everytime we want to get our own way.

A portion of the Bulgarian fans were being racist. Several have been arrested, their manager has been fired and they are now playing 2 games behind closed doors.

Seems about the right level of punishment to me.

And this is why I said England should have walked off the pitch. Would have been a watershed moment in the fight against racism and lead to far harsher consequences. Playing the game gave UEFA a way out, to be honest.

I think the other argument is that this time England have attempted to follow the protocol to the letter so if it happens again and they walk off they can cite that as a reason i.e. we attempted to follow UEFAs protocol but we now feel that it's pointless doing that because of how little was done abotu it.

Although to be fair if this is the 3rd time Bulgaria have done this then I do think further action needs to be taken. For me, I think the first offence should be punished with a match behind closed doors, then if it happens again they get expulsion from UEFA competition for 2 years or something like that. It would only need to happen once or twice before the other fans in these places started self-policing the racist idiots.

That’s a shame as Sterling probably our best player now (quite an upturn considering how awful he used to be for England).

I’d prefer him over any of the English Liverpool players tbh, although TAA is getting rather tasty.

The reception Sterling got on Sunday definitely seemed worse than he's had there before. It seemed quite nasty at times (typical Liverpool really), so I'm not surprised something like this happened.

Footballers are only human at the end of the day, so although they should always remain professional, sometimes people react badly.

Liverpool supporters have always been scummy. To him, it was always a notch above. And Sterling was fouled a bunch too. I’d be pissed too and let my feelings be known. Especially if nothing was done about it.

They are always bad to him. I’d put it on a par with the receptions we gave Judas. Although the players leaving of both clubs is hardly comparable.

This reads like a punishment for Sterling though which doesn’t sit comfortably with me. He’s a decent guy, I’d side with him over the Liverpool players but I guess if he’s the only Man City player in the squad it’s easier to drop him. It won’t sit well with Sterling’s mates in the squad though I wouldn’t of thought.

Southgate should of sent both players home though if you ask me.

Depends on what happened. If only Sterling is being dropped, then he must be the one at fault.

Seems over the top to drop him tbh.

Just let him and Gomez sort it out between themselves, everything has to be a drama nowadays lol.

Bet in previous years England players must have had beef and just slapped each other and that was the end of it.

In previous days the Liverpool and Man Utd players never sat together or spoke to each other. Which led to us being a bit shit.

By all accounts Sterling was the instigator of it and based on what he's said in the press he's admitted that he was in the wrong. Therefore it makes complete sense to drop him and not Gomes. It would cause far more unrest within the squad if Southgate had sided with Sterling despite him being the instigator because it just sends the message that if you're one of the gaffer's favourites then you're untouchable. This is a way of showing that it doesn't matter who you are, harmony within the team comes first. Luckily as it's a game we should be winning anyway Southgate can use it as an opportunity to make a point without it really being too much of a big deal either.
