I don't think it was a pointless signing. On the field it didn't make an impact, but I assume it improved brand awareness in the U.S., and I expect Levy to make a small profit in the end.

I'm in the US and before I became a fan, I had never heard of Tottenham. The whole premier league is doing a great job of boosting its popularity over here.
