We had also taken 24 points from the last 25 games which is relegation form and 2/3 of a season.

Wasn't that 28 points from the last 25? and why choose the last 25 games spanning two seasons? why not 30 games or 35 or even take it to 38 games to make it a full season?

Is that because if we take it to that last 30 games we get an extra 12 points as we won 4/5 of those games and that doesn't fit the agenda.

Or if we take it to 35 games it's another 12 points from 15? So that's 24 points out of a possible 30

Or 6 from 9 if we take it to 38. So that's 31 points from a possible 39 that are conveniently ignored.

On top of which we were on an amazing run to the Champions League Final for the first time in our History.

Why don't we look at things in context.

The season before this we dropped off really bad in the league but got to the Champions league final and despite our drop off still finished in the top 4.

This season when Poch was sacked despite our poor start we were only 3 points from 5th place. At no point have we been at risk of relegation and claiming so by randomly picking a patch of results is just agenda driven. When the season finished we were still 3 points from 5th.

Sorry... just noticed this is the Mourinho thread. So I'll leave it there and go back to celebrating that we got 6th and don't have to rely on Arsenal losing to get into the Europa. I'm looking forward to a good run in this competition and believe Jose could lead us to lifting the trophy.

I think a real glimmer of light is that Man U and Chelsea hardly look like world beaters. They were not that far in front of us and we have had a shocker of a season. I expect us to be far better next season, certainly points in the bag wise even if the football sucks balls.
They're there for the taking definitely.
Definitely. Man U only have the same points total as last season. We are minus 12 (and we lost 13 Pl games that year). Would imagine just getting back to that threshold should be enough for top 4. It's really not that high a bar, although we did win the majority of the remainder in 18/19. Draws were not common for some reason.

You made a point of saying mourinho had 2/3 of a season to make up 3 points on 5th place so why not look at our results over the previous 25 games which is also 2/3 of a season.

I think one of the main reasons why Mourinho was celebrating was because now he won't have to deal with the "Mourinho is a has-been, failed to rescue Tottenham's season, no longer a winner" narrative from the press and commentators all fucking summer and half of next season.

Surely, with all things being equal, if there was no improvement in results after the first 1/3 of the season we would've finished 9 points off fifth at the end of it

With Jose having had more of an influence on the defence and King coming on board, I think Jose will turn his attention to the midfield.

He'll be working on how to improve the transition and how to make us more creative.

It's been well noted that a midfield of Sissoko, Winks, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Alli, Skipp isn't going to cut it.

Hoejbjerg coming in will finally give us that base to work from. A player who can read the game defensively and close down the opposition before they reach our defensive line.

But what we do in front of that is a little more of a mystery.

What I'd like to see is
Ndombele, Winks, Lo Celso, Alli stay.
Sissoko sold.

If Jose chooses to have midfielders who are better footballers then I'd then hope we sign either Cantwell or Brooks for a more creative/tempo aspect.

You could have
Hoejbjerg
Ndomble/Cantwell Lo Celso

If he's looking for box-to-box midfielders to have a two holding player base then I'd like to see Kondogbia or Doucoure. That would then free up, Ndombele, Lo Celso and Alli to focus more on creativity.

Hoejbjerg Doucoure/Ndombele
Ndombele/Lo Celso/Alli

It will be interesting to see what Jose wants but I don't think Hoejbjerg alone will make the massive difference. With the amount of games we have Hoebjerg will need rotating

I agree - Jose has clearly cut his cloth and is accepting of the transfer situation; however, it's hard to imagine that he only had the one transfer in mind. That said, I think that he is expecting progress to be made via training sessions as much as via the transfer market.

A lot of people saying the key signing may be a DOF. And obviously the name du jour is Campos.
this deends on Mr Levy being able to work with one effectively, having the money to make it work.
Campos is not the only option though. There are other really experienced guys that have worked for this manager in the past such as Emenalo.
given how we are trying to operate it does seem to make sense as an appointment on this position.

After most post match interviews the players say we stood off them too much...

Now if that is the managers instructions then why do they say that. If it's not the managers instructions why are they doing that?
I'm going out on a whim here really but to me that sounds like they aren't pressing correctly. "Correctly" as in how Mourinho wants it to be done and is teaching them to.

They'll both spend big money. Chelsea will spend a bundle on defence now that FFP is effectively scrapped for now. Utd have started getting it together since Fernandez started knitting it all together aand Ole has a season under his belt. Think it will be a struggle for us to stay with them personally.

I agree. Hojberg alone wont make difference to our midfield. We need atleast another defensive minded box to box footballer ( Not Sissoko) to make it work. I really hoped Mourinho tried to make Vertonghen as DM.

Anyway, after signing Hojberg, everything depends on Ndombele. What we are going to do with Ndombele? If he has a future with us, then we have to focus on other parts of the pitch such as signing another right back and creative playmaker/winger type player. If Ndombele has no future with us, then we need to focus on buying another box to box midfielder rather than playmaker/winger type player. It all depends on the situation of Ndombele.

Hojberg, Fully fit Ndombele, Winks and Sissoko has the template of good central midfield pairing for any PL side bar city.

IF Chelsea sell Kante and Buy Rice, they will be an unstoppable team.

Yup I’ve heard that seriously downgrading key positions makes you unstoppable too. I mean, worked for us hoeing from Dembele and Wanyama to Winks and Sissoko right?

Kante is becoming injured prone for last two seasons... He is already 29 and he is not the same player anymore ... So they are trying to buy an upcoming young player in that position ...

We tried to replace an increasingly injury prone Dembele with an up and coming young player called Harry Winks. Doesn’t change that Winks wasn’t good enough, no more than it will for Rice when, who is a decent player but will never be in Kantes league. He’s overrated because he’s young and English and came through the West Ham youth system that produced 6 good players 20 years ago.

They might play him at center back and buy someone like ndidi to replace kante ... the gist of the post it Kante has missed lot of games this season and they want to sell him and buy players who can play minimum 40+ games next season ...

If Arsenal had celebrated like JM did at the end of the palace game we’d be pissing ourselves at the “small time” of it all.

I’m glad we finished 6th (on goal difference) and a few points ahead of our fiercest rivals (and SUFC?).

don’t get me wrong, happy we salvaged something from this season but that celebration was for the cameras (and Amazon).
Anyone remember this ‘small time’ celebration a few years back?

The most amusing argument I see is Jose inherited an unbalanced squad. Poch had a broken Dembele, Kane was injured more, Winks was pretty much injured for a year, Dier was injured and Eriksen stopped playing. Poch was screwed by Levy despite warning him we need to refresh the squad. Heck, Poch was given GKN, Njie and Janssen prior to that. Can you imagine Mourinho going 3 windows without buying a player? Do you think he will stick around?

Jose had the same issues as Poch. People need to stop blaming Poch and then saying Jose inherited an unbalanced squad. That's a Levy problem.

I do think Jose did a good job results wise. Our defence is not better, we just don't have players racing to support attack now. Poch struggled against teams sitting back like Palace did on last day, and so did Jose. For me not much has changed. I do think the new Jose was there beginning when he took charge and I genuinely believed he could take that team into top 4 cos he only had to fix the defence but the team was a threat and on the front foot.

I do think Jose is still too scared to take on ManU and Chelsea and that mentality will filter through to players next season. I would love to see Jose back his players to take on the teams we need to beat to get back into top 4. I know people are harping on about he is a winner, but so was George Graham and he won the league cup for us yet we didn't back him like some back Jose. I would like us back on the front foot (it's why I supported Tottenham) but Levy then needs to back Jose with the right players.
