Dier and Lamela = commitment and heart and for me our two best players the drop off of play after Lamela went off was alarming but possibly due to lack of match fitness , As for the penalty I saw no penalty but I did see a referee that was quite happy to be conned by Pogba as he was with Fernandes only even VAR could not give the second penalty .
Unted have had 19 penalties the second highest is 9penalties need I say more .

ill be the lone dissenting voice I guess. I thought he was ok but nothing more than that. I certainly don't think he should be our main choice of CB going forward.

I thought he looked good last night but as I said in the match rating thread he usually does for 99 per cent of a match and then chucks one in. Leverkusen at home and Utd away come to mind but there has been more.

It's also easy playing at centre back when you have no space to defend behind so everything is in front of you. If we ever become an expansive team again then I think he will start to struggle but that doesn't look like happening anytime soon.

Hopefully he can continue to improve but with Jan leaving we still need another centre half and a left sided one, so hopefully it will be one of the positions we still improve on in the transfer window.

It's the opposite. Dier has been trying to play at centre back all along and Poch saw him as a midfielder.

I thought he was very good yesterday, it was a soft penalty but it looked like a tired challenge against a player that had just come on.

There was an interview with dier just before lockdown where he said that he'd been trying to play centre back for years but the last manager - ie poch - wasn't having it, and he had no choice but to do what he was told.

Lamela and Dier are two of our worst players on the ball. Lamela has about 4 chances to play Son/Kane in last night and fluffed every one of them. Now is is too much to expect him to have pulled off one of them passes? Dier made a school boy error with Pogba, got to close and caught square on. He’s a liability.

Really? As far as I could see it was Dier’s only mistake & not sure how that highlight his “on the ball deficiency”. Yes he was caught out but it was not because of anything he did with the ball.
Personally thought he was one of our best players on the night with one mistake which was cruelly penalised.

Yes, really. This is one of many mistakes he has made over the years. He has a knack of making fatal mistakes. Most players in a game will make a mistake, generally good players when making a mistake recover them or they don’t end up costing us, Diers mistakes have a number of times been punished by conceding goals. If you think he is good enough for our team then you obviously didn’t enjoy us mixing it up in the CL and top 4. Perhaps mid table Spurs is more your thing where the players try but ultimately fall short of the mark.

I thought dier had a pretty good game ! Watched the game with a united supporting friend told him each of our defenders have a mistake in them and wel probably gift you a goal .. Sanchez nearly gifts rashford a goal first half .... aurier nearly gifts them 2 goals .... dier gives away the pen soft however ! Point is as a whole are defence have far to many mistakes in them it’s not even every now and again it’s more than 1 a game

It’s what makes the game in this country so frustrating, different officials interpret decisions in different ways. There’s zero consistency. I don’t think referees have ever been as inconsistent as they are now. I can only imagine how annoying it must be for players, so in a way they might as well go down in the area because they don’t know if they’ll get a penalty or not from one game to the next.

Yeah and VAR makes it even more frustrating, as if VAR doesn't overturn it must be a pen, or visaversa, mentality. Who do we blame etc.

The video makes me angry, not because it wasn't a pen, but because we would hardly ever been given that. Man Utd have had a ton of soft penalties this season, and Pogba was playing for the penalty. If it was the other way, I would have no doubt people would be writing articles about it, pundits saying it's soft and blablabla.

This is exclusively a Man Utd, Liverpool thing that comes from the massive attention those clubs get and how the majority of journalists and pundits are fans of those two clubs and somehow everything becomes drama around those clubs. Similarly, if they lost today the focus would be on why they lost, if they were unlucky etc and not on what we did. This happens to us as well, as being a 'bigger' club the focus always tends to ignore the smaller ones. We certainly get much more decisions go our way as we improved, and for me this bias is clear.

The thing is he is very good in that CB/CM role that he did when he first came into the side, and he still does offer something at CM (namely he is very good in the air, and covers space quite well) but does lack say, the ability to turn into space etc. But we haven't played that role, where he goes in between the CB's when we are building attacks and goes in midfield when out of possession in a long time, and so for that position he is limited in what he can do.

tbh he has made individual errors the last few seasons, but everybody has. We are very good at making errors. Under Poch that made a lot of sense, as we played in a way which was very high risk (For example playing high up the pitch, pushing fullbacks high, trusting defenders in One on One situations and patient build up from the back, even when being pressed against) but we should be cutting those out under Jose. But we are a defense without confidence and that is always going to lead to mistakes.

I was actually quite impressed how Dier got back at Pogba. He had gone past Dier who was then totally unbalanced had a yard on him but Dier still got back at him. He wasn’t behind Pogba they were level it was a tussle not a foul. If it had just gone to VAR I really doubt they would have given it. But as Moss had given it and there was contact was hard to overturn.

Watched the pen again, it was pretty poor positionally from Winks he should of helped Dier out.

It was very poor positioning from Winks but we cant expect much better from him. He’s a very average limited #8 as is being shoehorned into a role he does not have the defensive ability, physicality or positional awareness to play.

Very glad he's coming round to the idea of being a CB, he's built perfectly for a CB, he is strong in the air, quick enough, can pass, can tackle, decent positionally, perfect for modern day CB, he's a 6/10 CDM and could be a 8/9/10 CB. Thought he was top class vs man.u and neither pens given were a pen, both players threw themselves to the ground.
