Agree - gut says that TS doesn't have a couple of seasons at PL level in him but players of this ilk with a bit more longevity on a free could be just what we need.

That leap from competitive to winners is tough, and experience can be a great shortcut. We lacked a bit of this under Poch - a couple of shrewd additions could have changed everything.
I remember the impact of the likes of Naybet and Davids. Felt it's a shame we haven't looked for these types of players since.

Jan declined so much in space of 3 months. And Thiago is 2 years older than him, that would be very risky move. And he's not that kind of leader in dressing room as you would think about Ramos for example.
Like I said, I have no opinion on Thiago as I haven't seen him play.

Jan has declined a lot so it's time for him to go. But the right experienced centre back on a 1 year deal could help some of our younger players.

Thank you for your assessment @dirtydave. I can understand why so many have doubts about Hojbjerg — he lacks the athleticism that many crave for the DM position in order to unleash Ndombele and Lo Celso, there’s reason to wonder whether his ball recovery stats are just a product of Saints’ setup, and he doesn’t have the ability on the ball of a Fernandinho or Fabinho — so hearing from someone who sees a lot of his matches is definitely reassuring.

He wouldn’t be my first choice if it weren’t for the Covid-induced austerity, but I can see the sense in it. For me the biggest question is whether he’s a better option than Sangare, who should be available very cheaply.
No reason we can't get both in and sell Sissoko.

Exactly - not saying those aforementioned players were part of a grand strategy but i do blame our apparent lack of one now for not being better in the market in this way.

Surely to operate successful (as often as you can realistically) you need someone overseeing strategy. Bringing players through to fill voids in the team, loaning players out for game time, splashing on the right players/prospects and adding experience when needed. These are all elements i think we've largely done badly for a while. I think TN and GLC are excellent buys and maybe our revenue (post Covid) allows us to buy this level of player more, but we 100% should complement those buys with better youth and experience buys.

With Dier moving to CB, I doubt we will be signing one. Toby, Sanchez, Dier, Tanganga and Foyth seems enough. Even if Foyth goes on loan, we’ll have Davies for emergency cover. Any funds we have available will go toward a DM.

But I could easily see Foyth staying. Replace Serge with another quick, forward thinking RB. Use Foyth to back him up. That leaves one forward thinking FB and one defensive minded FB at each position, which allows Jose to keep his fluctuation between a back 3 & 4 during the games no matter who the FB’s are.

Personally i think Thiago Silva would be a great signing. Even if we get one good season out of him it would be worth it right now given the financial situation and the desperate need we have in defence. He's up there with some of all the all time great defenders of the last 10 years, many of which had good seasons at his age.

Also in his favour is the fact that this season was a short one and he has been largely injury free for most of his career. It also shows a massive sign of intent with our transfer activities - yes we will struggle to compete when there are large signing fees right now, but we should be right at the front of the queue for quality out of contract players like this IMO.

I'd love to see Silva play for Spurs without a doubt.

Very interesting read. I am slightly more convinced than I have been watching some games of him I must say. If Jose does believe he is disciplined enough to play the role then that might signal a switch to more front foot football, with Ndombele, Lo Celso and Alli freed up to attack and press higher up the pitch whilst having confidence their back is covered.

Watching us, it's obvious that we have massive massive problems stopping quick transitions and counters in midfield. The Wolves game was an example of this despite playing some decent football overall.

The whole question of who we should recruit in midfield revolves around one issue, namely, what formation is Mourinho likely to employ. It's abundantly clear to me that we haven't had the players to employ a 2 man CM since Dembele left, Wanyama got crocked and Dier got sick. Whatever combination was used had glaring deficiencies. Now many people are saying Hojbjerg would be a decent option in a 3 man midfield with Ndombele and Lo Celso. I'd counter that by saying Winks would do a much, much better job under those circumstances (like he has done for England actually), but he's been used almost exclusively in a CM2 where his weaknesses are exposed. Likewise, Skipp would have plenty of support around him with 2 other midfielders around him but his inexperience could be exploited far easier in a CM2 setup. I don't think Hojbjerg would fare any better than Winks under those circumstances either. IMO, to employ a CM2 you need 2 exceptional talents who can cover all bases and get through a mountain of work, and we don't have those players, nor are we likely to buy a top quality DM to partner a more creative player.

I don't see anything changing unless we address our preferred setup. IMO, we were probably best when Dier played at the base of the diamond and dropped into a back 3 with FBs pushing up. He doesn't look capable of doing that any more though but I think Foyth is probably worth a go. That setup seemed the only usable way that we could get Dele and Eriksen on the pitch together and also seemed fairly robust defensively. Can't say I'm the least bit optimistic of seeing any of the above addressed though.

I agree but neither of them were 35 when they joined and the league has sped up since then too.
Naybet was 34 when he joined us but once again my point isn't that we should buy Thiago. I have no idea about the individuals only that I think an experienced player at the end of his career can be really beneficial on a 1 year deal. Remember Gary Mcallistair joining Liverpool for example.

When are player threads likely to start again?

I see lots of media rumours on The Twitter about our transfer targets but not much on here. Would be nice to have something to actually get excited by.
