Live football 3pm Saturday afternoons...?

How about that? If there's nobody in the stadium, why not broadcast the games live at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon? The only reason they never do this is because they don't want to adversely affect the match day attendances, but if there is no attendance, what's to stop them doing that?

I wonder if that's being considered by the broadcasters.

They could put them on at 10am on a Tuesday morning for all I care, got nothing else on.

I think it is being considered. Sure I've read it somewhere.
It is.

This is ITK: When the PL kicks off again the 10 games will all be at different times. One on the late Friday slot, four game slots on Saturday, four on Sunday, and the late slot on Monday. Every game on TV.

We're going to be completely overloaded with football and quite frankly you'd have to be mental or working with the TV product to bother watching it all.

In Spain and Germany and other countries they broadcast every single game, whenever it is, even before coronavirus. The 3pm rule in the UK is archaic bullshit and should have been scrapped years ago.

Would the UEFA one not have been during CL and possibly Europa League games?
I think just before lockdown.

It was a UEFA blackout, as us broadcasting matches at 3pm on a Saturday would not only potentially affect attendances in this country (not just in Football League, but right down to grass roots level) , but also across the continent

The English and Scottish FAs requested the transmission-free period to be withdrawn, with article 8 of Uefa’s regulations allowing for changes due to force majeure.

It was updated at beginning of April and UEFA spokesman said: “Taking into account the current exceptional circumstances, Uefa has lifted the “blocked hours” protection granted to the Uefa Member Associations for England and Scotland for the remainder of the 2019/20 season football season, following requests from the relevant National Associations as a result of measures taken in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

I like what Marty said above (as I believe he works for TV broadcaster in Scandinavia), as that correlates to what I was told would be the likely case, and also if the extra games are on free-to-air over here (Sky in Germany put on all games on free-to-air last week) it will help in respect of crowds congregating outside grounds.

Thanks, that's very interesting. I've heard somewhere that all the remaining games dates and kick off times are going to be staggered, so they can all be shown live. If that's the case, we're in for a real footie-fest!

Kick-off times will be this from what I've heard.

Friday: 20.00
Saturday: 12.30, 15.00, 17.30, 20.00
Sunday: 12.00, 14.00, 16.30, 19.00
Monday: 20.00

Basically wall-to-wall football for roughly 10 hours (including a half hour preamble before the first kickoff) on both Saturdays and Sundays.

And they'll have to cram in either two or three midweek rounds to complete the schedule within the UEFA agreed time limit.

Football fans have been treading water these past few months, and suddenly they're all going to be drowned.

I guess the major factor with the last remaining 9 games is that they're all pressure matches and the broadcasters will be ramping up the hype in the time before the games.

I'm not sure it's anything to do with UEFA is it? It's exclusively an English thing so I assume it comes from the FA

It is a way to 'force' people to attend the games at the stadium. I think the middle east is the only region where this rule don't comply

I understand the reason for it my point was I always thought it was an English rule because I don't know any other country that has such a TV blackout. It's definitely not just the middle East that shows 3pm games.

I thought we were discussing the possibility to show more than one game per 3pm. Nevermind :)
