While I like it in theory, it won't change anything other than now we'll be looking at badly drawn MS Paint lines showing a shoelace arguably overlapping, it just moves the point of reference.

So a player could be on the floor in the box, outstretched with his head in line with the last defender and the rest of his body offside - the ball comes through the box, hits him in the foot and lobs the keeper who’d have had no trouble without the deflection. That should count because his head was in line?

The whole point is that no goal-scoring body part should be offside as those body parts are the ones that can impact the game and actually put the ball in the goal. Why the fuck he thinks that's a good idea is beyond me, it's idiotic.

From Marty's link above, imagine this was seen as a legitimate goal:

Exactly. Moving the point of reference solves nothing if the law is supposed to be judged as millimetre-precise as it is being judged today.

I think they should draw the line at the foot. If it's past the defender's foot, it's offside. If it's level, it's onside. Forget about the body.

The offside rule isn't the problem, the margins for error in VAR are the problem.

Agree. I don’t agree with this proposed change as shown by that clip above.

I would much prefer a simple time limit and a naked eye check. It would still have all the benefits of being able to look at all the angles, but would still retain the general benefit of the doubt principle for the attacking aide. As it’s always been, but is now being eradicated.

It won’t be perfect ( nothing will), but will still be in keeping with the spirit of the game.

I can’t imagine any fan in the past has had a massive problem with a “too tight to call” offside decision.

They missed out the bit where Wenger said '.....and it only counts if I saw it'.

All it will change is the amount of goals given instead of taken away.

What needs to change is the review time. If it's not "clear and obvious" within a 30 second time span then the onfield ruling remains.

Exactly this. Stop fucking about drawing lines and discussing whose pubes are offside. Have a look, make a call in 30 seconds (I’d prefer 10), or if you can’t then the refs decision stands, right or wrong.

I agree otherwise Dele will never be onside :cautious:

I would love to hear the crowd with this at one end of the ground -

That's funny, but when I stop to think about it, I can actually imagine that being done by crowds. Obviously, not a full thirty-second one, but how hard would it actually be if say, whenever there's a VAR check, the crowd start counting down from 10 and then if they get to zero without an outcome, they do the Countdown noise?

Can you imagine being a ref and hearing that every time you refer to VAR...?

We just need to get used to VAR and changing the point where your offside changes nothing .
I myself like the idea mentioned by spursgirls . the game we play or watch is called football not headball not arm pit ball not chest or thigh ball . So lets use the foot as the point of reference for offside you would still get the arguments about millimetres but I think it would be more digestible to take decisions decided where the players feet were the deciding offsides .
All this arm pits stuff is hard to digest as it is still someones opinion where to draw the ( armpit ) line .
I am sure Wenger has good intentions but it just moves the argument to a different point .
We watch and play FOOTBALL

The most contentious part of it all is accurately synching the moment where the action is frozen with the precise moment the ball is kicked. Since there isn't a way of doing that there should be a much bigger margin for error than the millimetres VAR currently works to.

So what is the ‘daylight rule’ proposal? If it is that a player is not offside unless his whole body is past the line of the second defender (goalie is usually the first) then I would love to see this tried. This to me makes more sense than right now when goals are disallowed for a tie being offside. It will put the game much more back into the hands of the ref plus it gives an easy point of reference to the VAR
