Ok. When I posted a message on the following lines in the match thread I received quite a bit of flak, but as I stand by what I said so im going to try and trigger some debate. So here goes:

I have never rated Hugo Lloris as a top goal keeper. I agree he is athletic and can be a decent showstopper. He sweeps reasonably well although his kicking is not always the best.

But quite simply he doesn't bring a sense of calmness and control to the box. He makes too many mistakes and does not command the box. He stays on the line too much and does not look to gather crosses.

I actually think Paolo Gazzaniga is a more consistent goalkeeper. He always gathers well but perhaps does not match Hugo when it comes to the flying saves. I personally prefer him in goal.

Besides the following screw ups - including the World Cup Final - he also was out for several months this season because of a what happened from an absolute howler. I don't normally like picking on a player this much but I wouldn't be surprised if Jose is on the look out for a Peter Cech type keeper. Steady and commanding with good positional sense.

Probably best to post it in his player thread if you want a proper debate:

I like Gaz but at the moment Lloris is still number one not only because of his qualities as a goalkeeper but also because he is a leader both on and off the pitch.

The video has what 8 or 9 mistakes in it? Over the course of just under 3 mins, the guy has over 600 club games under his belt and has over 100 international caps, I would be surprised if a goalkeeper didn't have that number of mistakes over the course of a career like that, particularly a sweeper keeper.

Honestly we are lucky to have Hugo. I love that he's mobile and quick. There's a reason he's been France's no.1 and captain for so long. And it's no coincidence that our form has improved since he returned from injury.

Very appropriate timing

This sentence encapsulates the article:
"there is no goalkeeper in the Premier League who has saved his team more goals since Opta began collecting their expected-goals data in 2013. Lloris not only stops the shots that other goalkeepers do not, the analysis reveals that he has done so consistently throughout his long Premier League career."

Awesome article and well worth a read. Very interesting about Lloris staying closer to his line than other keepers for distance shots. I wouldn't swap him for anyone, and have to accept the odd goal from a mistake.

2013 was 7 years ago. He has nearly cost us the game in every match since he returned, he's a liability and has been for years.

I think part of why Lloris is underrated is because of his lack of physicality. He is slim, and appears smaller than he is. That was why Wenger rejected him, stating he was too small. If he had the built of a Schmeichel, Lloris might have been a Gooner.

Lol so now we're judging keepers not by what they actually do, but by what they might have done? This is ridiculous.

I can't tell if spunky is being sarcastic but that in itself shows the ridiculousness of the debate.

We're talking about a goalkeeper who's been consistently one of the best for 7 years

No I'm judging him by the actual mistakes he keeps on making and has been making consistently for 3 or 4 years, he hasnt been one of the best for a very very long time. But because we didn't lose those games people are ignoring them.

We probably didn't lose those games because of the vast number of game saving stops he makes time after time after time...

Yes but we MIGHT have lost them. Those ten saves he made are cancelled out by a 'mistake' that MIGHT have cost a goal.

And lets face it, what passes for a mistake on SC has a very VERY low threshold.

Jesus, the levels of ridiculousness on here are sometimes mucho grande.
