What I don't understand is how Willian José can be seen as a backup plan for Piatek. If it's an either/or scenario as is apparently being suggested, it seems a little bizarre because they look like totally different types of players. It's almost as if we don't have a plan...

Thats the Jan market for you.
Jan window - we will mostly likely not have loads of targets. So, we got to make the best of what is there in market.

At this point I don’t know who we are closer to getting, all I know is I can see this dragging on till deadline day to see what of Piatek/Willian is the better deal

Do you think DL still wakes up at night haunted by the Bentley deal (and subsequent mocking videos) after being laughed at for spending that amount on him (at the time a club record £15m to £17m)

And now Just takes a valuation halves it then thinks of Bentley, halves it again, then thinks of Bentley, and asks for a loan deal?

I believe he had a full head of hair before that transfer too...:cautious:

I mean... we have a bad (36%) record for big money signings... Any of these will likely keep Levy up at night crying...

1 France Tanguy Ndombele France Lyon £53.8M 2019
2 Colombia Davinson Sánchez Netherlands Ajax £42M 2017
3 Argentina Erik Lamela Italy Roma £30M 2013
4 France Moussa Sissoko England Newcastle United £30M 2016
5 Spain Roberto Soldado Spain Valencia £26M 2013
6 Brazil Lucas Moura France Paris Saint-Germain £23M 2018
7 South Korea Son Heung-min Germany Bayer Leverkusen £22M 2015
8 Netherlands Vincent Janssen Netherlands AZ £17M 2016
9 Brazil Paulinho Brazil Corinthians £17M 2013

10 Croatia Luka Modrić Croatia Dinamo Zagreb £16.5M 2008
11 England Darren Bent England Charlton Athletic £16.5M 2007

If we’re being brutally honest I’d add those two

I think you could add the flops that were punts to get an overall view of flops - Njie, Nkoudou, Llorente (was hardly an incredible signing), Janssen, Soldado, Stambouli, Paulinho, Fazio, Sissoko for the first two years of his spurs career was f*cking awful, remember? It goes on.

It all sounds a bit too much like the plot to the Broadway show "The Producers"

"Following the flop of theatre musical Funny Boy (based on William Shakespeare's Hamlet) ("Opening Night"), the show's washed-up producer, Max Bialystock, hires the neurotic Leo Bloom as his accountant. While studying Max's books, Leo notes that as a flop is expected to lose money, the IRS will not investigate the finances of failed productions. Leo jests that by selling an excess of shares and embezzling the funds, a flop could generate up to $2 million..."

That there's a working hypothesis of how we afforded the first £500m of stadium costs. (Joke).

So let me get this right from today's information - he's arriving to sign today but only once we've put in a second bid that bridges a gap of about ten million and sort out third party ownership?

Yeah and we also need to try and fail for Piatek about 10 more times with increasing £1 bids. We're gonna put him up in a premier inn until deadline day as Levy has some 50% off a January stay. His club are paying for his food during his stay though. Levy pushed hard on that point as he looks like puts more than his share away.

I’m just really not sure what we’re doing. 28 years old, average scoring record, anyone saying we should sign him had no idea who he was a week ago. Surely we need another striker to compete, play with and fill in for Kane (with his now pretty torrid injury record). Not clearly aiming for back up quality - it has Jansen, Llorente quality written all over it. Yes those players were effective in bursts but aren’t we meant to be moving forward as a club?! Aim a little fucking higher?!

The reason no-one's made a similar musical about football is because it's far too close to the truth to be funny.

(I'm sure HMRC certainly don't see football finance as a laughing matter!)

Me likey.

Loves a backheel. Also appears to be totally two footed. Good in the air, can pick out a pass.

On this evidence he looks to be a more well rounded player than Piatek, although the latter is probably a more natural finisher.

If I had to choose I'd take Willian Jose over Piatek but I'd be more than happy with either...............or both.
I'm getting Berba vibes from your description, could be a hidden gem. An older player who can probably shine in a good team. Then I rated Steven Fletcher.

Who can we get in January who is going to immediately hit the ground running and then be happy sat on the bench when Kane returns from injury? Who is available?

36% in terms of 4 duffers out of 11 buys - but it works out to 26% of the value of almost £294m. I don't think that's terrible.

I'd say there are likely many clubs worse off that that over a couple of decades of premier league spend.
