I think after signing several up and coming prospects in recent years who haven’t made the step up, then been hard to shift, the loan policy is a way of mitigating that risk, and no end up lumbered with £3/4/5m pa salary and a non hg squad spot being taken up. Yes, there’s a hit on the loan fee should we not take up the option, but much better than being tied into a contract for several more seasons (and all the overheads associated with that player who still gets the same catering, medical treatment, etc as a first choice player).

It’s been common in Spain and Italy for ages, so I’m not concerned that we’ve adopted this approach.

The fact that most of the SC experts haven’t been creaming themselves over this guy makes me feel so much better about this kid. To the point where I’m convinced he’ll be a success.

You really think only Spurs fans do that?

It's not relevant to me whether Spurs are the only fans to do it or not. I don't go on the Twitter accounts of other clubs, cos I'm not an trolling see you next Tuesday. I only care about Spurs.

As I said, during the game yesterday people were saying they didn't care about the game, they just wanted a signing. How retarded is that? Genuinely ridiculous and embarrassing.

He played only 1,000 mins in the Portuguese league last season. How on Earth is he worth £56m?

Transfer market is just mental these days. And we are doing a poor job of navigating it.

Hi guys,
Sorry for my raw english, but i'm portuguese and live currently in Portugal.
Regarding Gédson, what is being said among the portuguese football community is that Benfica made another huge deal once the player never was a firsk pick for the lineup, and never showed (in portuguese league - that places 6 or 7 in europe in terms of quality) the potential that a 65M€ deal option pretends to present.
If you want a middlefielder for quite the same value (around 70/75M€): why don't go for Bruno Fernandes (League MVP for the last 2 seasons).
Just look to João Felix (At Madrid): it was sold by 120M and is struggling to show anything close to this value.
As a huge fan of Spurs (my favourite team in England) hope that Levy wont pay for this guy. This is another deal made by Mourinho and Mendes (his agent) that will be another flop.

Bit of detective work... I've just re-read the Dragon1 ITK in the ITK part of the forum...

Where it says "we’re in talks with another Portuguese international I can’t say too much but much more experienced than Fernandez and I’m not referring to bf (not silva at milan, not moutinho)" orignally there was a third name in addition to silva and moutinho, which has now been omitted - Renato Sanches. I don't know why it has been omitted.

When you look at the boxes Renato ticks it makes a lot of sense: Portuguese capped (18 times), Mendes client, age 22, EPL experience (Swansea), plays for Lille, CL experience, AND crucially, won't cost the earth. What's not to like for Levy/José?

The price of the buy option isn't that relevant is it? If he turns out to be worth that kind of money in 18 months we'll pay it, if not we won't pay it.

Perhaps the fact he was an utter flop in England and looked unable to play football.

He isn't right now but in 18 months if he does well with us then he could easily be worth that amount.

The beauty of this deal is how if he is as bad as some say, we can just not take up the option. If he performs then he’s being bedded before the final transfer. Pretty decent on our end

He only moved to Lille last summer and he needs to be playing regularly, so I can't see it. Stranger things have happened in football, though

It also seems a lot more Premier League clubs are going down the Loan route this January.

What a weird way to look at this deal. We have him on loan for 18 months with the option to make it permanent for the set fee. How is that navigating the market poorly? It's basically risk free - if he comes in and smashes it, he'll be worth the fee - if he comes in and flops, we won't pay it. Fucking hell.

This is a great deal. Also people not factoring in £56m will likely represent better value in 18 months time than it does now. It's virtually risk free aside from a small loan fee. We'll also not have to offer him a contract to bump his wages so we'll only be paying £20-30k a week and he will also be keen to earn himself a permanent contract with vastly improved terms.
