His positional sense isn't atrocious, our dimwit fans' understanding of positioning is just fucking awful because 99% of you have never actually kicked a ball or played a competitive game in your lives. He was playing as a right midfielder essentially on Saturday, tasked with pinning Robertson back, he wasn't tracking Trent back half the time - that's just more agenda-driven nonsense with no foundation in reality.

Trent did switch sides with Robertson at one point though, if that's what's confusing you.

Exactly. If Aurier is so lazy tracking back and so out of position defensively all the time, would he be starting almost every game under Jose? Reading the same shit posted by those haters is sickening. There is no point in reasoning with his haters. As a Chinese saying goes, you cannot wake a person pretending to sleep. They just find whatever blame they can lay at Aurier's doorstep whenever possible and hope they can convinced the rest of the world.

I don't disagree that some of the criticism is more less just emotional, but I'm not sure how strong this "every game" argument is. Who is he supposed to play? I personally think KWP would have been better if he had been given the same kind of opportunity. And I like Foyth as a RB, but I can understand why Mourinho decided to go with experience. And unfortunately KWP and Foyth have made some errors when playing.

I would be shocked if Aurier was to be a cornerstone of a Mourinho team going forward.

Well Poch prefers playing Sanchez at rb over a fit Aurier. Jose obviously see Aurier as a player he can trust hence starting Aurier whenever he can. Dier does not even play as many games despite the faith many fans have in his capability as a dm. Saying Aurier starts because Jose has no choice when there is KWP, Foyth and youth team right back is simply not true.

Two managers have now not fancied KWP. You have to take the hint that the boy just doesn't have it.

As for Foyth, he's not a RB. I can't see Jose ever playing him there unless we have a calamitous injury problem there. The youth team right back is probably not good enough, let's be honest. Serge is the only option right now.

Scraping the barrel here aren't we? If Sanchez is the competition it is "true".

I have already made my comments around Foyth and KWP. I didn't say there weren't options to Aurier, but they are hardly very good.

I think it is far too early to tell whether Jose rates Serge and trusts him.

If he is our first choice right back in August time will tell. Personally I will be amazed

I like him and wanted him to get a run of games. Unfortunately for us he switches off and goes for a wander too often to be a starter in a CL chasing side looking to win Silverware

We also generate the 8th highest revenue in World football!!!!!

If Aurier is in Jose’s mid-term plans I’d be very surprised.

He’s doing ok for now and he’s not the pressing concern. Personally I think a defensive midfielder is the pressing concern. But we will see.

To be fair the last part is not wholly relevant in the short term. The 7 above us have been doing it a lot longer.

we need a sustained couple of years in the new stadium to cement that status in my opinion.

I have been very critical of him, but thought he was excellent today. Almost like he defended better on a yellow being a bit more tentative in his style? Normally not a good thing for a defender of course, but for him it worked today I thought.

No fan of Aurier. Today in the first half most of our attacking play was down the right. Time and again he got possession in a great position but hesitated turning back out again. This was similar to the hesitation disease that afflicted both Walker and Trippier in their latter days. In the second half Aurier had less wide ball but actually put in several top low crosses. He also got in two crucial headed clearances. Jury still out but if Mourinho tolerates his 'Roselike' jog trot recoveries I'd rather it be as right wing back in a three rather than as right back. Would score him a seven overall today

I tend to agree but hard to judge without an out and out striker in the box to cross to

No point crossing without any striker in the box to get on the end of them.

It's amazing how many people don't recognise this during the games.

Even when a striker is playing, many times there is only one player in the box and that player makes no effort to move and expects all crosses to find them.

This isn’t aimed directly at Aurier but more at our coaching staff in general, even going back to Poch.

What amazes and frustrates me is that we hardly ever try to get to the byline to cross the ball or even better, fizz a low whipped cross in.

Funnily enough we actually did it twice towards the end of the Watford game and nearly scored!

In general though, we just don’t seem to work on patterns of play that will release our fullbacks in to areas where they can get to the byline, or release our wing forwards in to those areas.

Crossing from the byline or near it is much harder for the opposition defence to defend due to defenders body positions and having to react more.

Doing this regularly makes you harder to read, which allows you to mix it up with more crossing from slightly deeper positions, with more space afforded due to the opposition panicking about allowing you to get in behind.

It also doesn’t help when one fullback is basically told to stay back defensively. This lopsided shape may seem clever but in reality it makes it very easy for the opposition to defend. They essentially know that you’re only going to overlap down one side, so they can compensate for that and focus their shuffling down their left side to combat Aurier and the RWF, knowing that we only have Son down the left with no fullback supporting.

Little things like this affect every player on the pitch and give us less attacking patterns of play to use.

No doubt in my mind, his best performance for us. Usually you sometimes get immense attacking and not the other half but today I think that was about as perfect a performance from fullback as you can get. Superb.
