Barcelona don’t have a chairman who believes English clubs need to stop spending money and follow the European model of not spending much!
That’s really taken out of context. What Levy is actually referring to is net spend. This forum and the PL in general are obsessed with it, and use it to make statements about ambition. Levy’s point is that what counts is who you bring in not how much you have spent. It is about being financially responsible, but that sort of thing is completely lost when the average fan watches Chelsea and City get to where they are based on unabated spending.

Back on topic, that’s really interesting iTK from Herc. If we have always known Eriksen wasn’t keen to extend again, you have to wonder why he hasn’t been moved on or why mitigation plans in terms of recruitment haven’t been put in place.

I hope when talking about loan deals it’s about moving players on (e.g. Rose) and not bringing them in. We need to back Mourinho with some signings on intent this month!

So we’re signing Dele’s brother after all? :cautious:

To me Herc’s itk reads like enquiries about loaning our players.

Whatever it means, I hope we just get on with it and sign some fucking players before the last minute of the window.

I have no doubt we will. Nor do I doubt I will:
- come home to a well cooked meal
- be treated with love and respect by my well behaved children this weekend
- win the lottery

The only thing that comes to mind is brinkmanship - not in a petty way, but with the thought that something would change and eventually he would sign an extension....

I hear CE told club 4 years ago, and I shared that privately then, that he would not be signing another contract. Once we held unto him end of 2017/2018 season, he was always going to run down his contract, unless 2 Spanish giants came calling. From what I have deciphered, he will see out his contract, and go on a free.

yet, weirdly enough he had indicated in the summer he ‘may’ sign a new contract, as all was agreed, but with heavy clauses. We know the rest.

Badly managed by the club to now be in this position. Lot of loan inquiries, haven’t heard anything concrete about outgoing sales. Will save the rest for now.

This makes the decision to not move for Maddison or pay a little bit more to sign Grealish even more damning. Especially when we could have offered them a clear pathway to the first 11 in the knowledge that Eriksen was going to leave at the end of this season.
What’s pretty clear is we still have no plan and are no closer to finding a replacement. So the usual.

this is very useful info. It actually gives me, overall, a better impression of Eriksen and can understand your (@Hercules) frustration in prior windows even more.
CE decision to sign and then let Levy know was similar to his last signature with Ajax. Levy should have enjoyed the first year of the new contract 2016-2017 and then that summer he should have been sold AND the money reinvested. This was the summer we lost Walker of course and the summer before we started playing at Wembley. Eriksen would have commanded a good fee, would have been open to a move and an evolution of the squad could have benefited down the line.

100% agree, the more I've seen on Grealish this season, he seems ideal replacement for CE and we should've been proactive to secure him way before the end of CE contract . Links play well, can influence pace of match, gets goals and is quality from dead ball.
And compared to Maddison, JG is doing this at Villa where all attention is on him from fans and opponents so clearly can shoulder the pressure.

The only problem with this is, that

A) Someone that Eriksen wanted to go to had to be interested (remember that we tried to push him onto United last summer, but he refused)

B) The interested club had to be willing to pay a reasonable fee

Nothing suggests that both the above was met at anytime.

Gealish was a complicated one tbh. I can completely understand why Levy did what he did because Villa had to sell and from their end it was very close to happening for the money we wanted to pay. The takeover came from nowhere and happened super quickly and from that point on he was never going to be allowed to leave. They never wanted to sell so were holding out for as long as possible hoping for a cash injection so they didn't need to sell, but it got to a point where they had to. We moved then the new investors appeared. It wasn't like we could have just paid a bit more and got it done because that wasn't possible.

This is from a combination of the villa end and JG people. I

If Eriksen told the club 4 years ago he wouldn't sign another contract then fair enough.

I know we have always looked to buy low and sell on at a large profit but to get 6 years of Eriksen for 11 million up front and 50K per week is still very good business even if he does leave on a free.

He has left a lot of money on the table in order to follow this plan of his, and I think that is honourable. Compare Eriksen's behaviour to Zaha who signed a big money contract and then agitated for a move the very next window.

This is what was said at the time too.
Can't really believe people are still blaming Levy for messing about with the deal.
The new ownership came in at exactly the wrong time for us.

I remember reading a lot of press reports suggesting Villa would accept around £25m for Grealish but Levy was only willing to pay around £5m - £10m due to the Villa financial situation. If Levy pulled it off then he would be getting the plaudits but he didn't so then it was why didn't he just bid closer to the £25m they wanted for a player whom we had apparently chased for a while. I recall originally Villa wanted £45m for him. Regardless as Trix said it was complicated.
