Were they signed mid season and hit the ground running though?

That’s what we need.

None of those players were. With an established, experienced player who’s played at the top level for 6/7 seasons there’s much more chance it will come off. That was more the point I was making. If there’s one in the French League, then fair enough, as long as though he’s not another Stambouli!
Yeah fair point, but regardless of leagues are we realistically going to find a real top quality DM who is aged 25+ for under £20 million in January? Seems practically impossible to me.

Most of the real top talents are worth more by the time they're that age and unless the player is running their contract down, we really won't get a whole lot for less than £20 million these days. Add in the fact that clubs are notoriously reluctant to sell in Jan and we'd probably be looking at signing another stop-gap plodder at best (i.e. Stambouli - exactly who you don't want). Given how hard it is for us to get players off our books that absolute last thing we need is mediocrity

I'd much prefer us to do proper scouting and spend big money on someone who we really rate who could be our DM for years to come (Soumare) or pick up a young upcoming talent on the cheap (the next Kante).

That's what our scouts are for though isn't it. Surely they could find a couple who could come in and do a job better than Dier/nobody. That cant be that hard can it, I know prices are crazy but still. The free agents list for the summer isn't a place to start to look for a bargain, I can say that!

Sure, a plank of wood with a painted face would be better than Dier, but do we really want to offer a 3/4 year contract for someone who is a bit older and established, but essentially still a stop-gap? This was our modus operandi a few years and we ended up with loads of abolute dross on our books like Fazio, Stambouli and Capoue that then took years to flog and took up vital squad spaces.

We don't just need someone better than Dier, we need someone who will be our DM for the next 5 years and help us to compete with Man City and Liverpool. If that player was an established 25 year old playing in a top league, everyone and their dog would be out to sign him and no way would he cost less than £20 million or be available on a free without a fight.

Ive always quite liked Capoue. Even when he was with us. I’d rather Doucoure from watford though.

Try expiring 2021 - very decent few players there.

Spurs fans: We need to stop buying cheap, temporary solutions to problem areas in the team.

Also Surs fans: We must be able to pick up a bargain CDM.

Yeah to be fair Capoue is actually a very decent player but his attitude at Spurs was pretty terrible and he rarely played to the best of his ability - maybe he woulda been a hit under a different manager.

Would love Soumare if we can get a deal. Has all the a raw attributes to be a top CM imo.

United are linked with any central mid with a pulse at the moment. The others are there for fans to click the link considering the options those teams mentioned have centrally for them currently.

Doesn't mean the mighty Lyall is wrong ...

Dont watch a lot of French football, so had a look at this lads highlights on YouTube (I know..), and i really liked what i saw!

Would be a great partnership, him and Ndombele in the middle of the park!

It is vital we start a rebuild of our squad this window rather than wait for the summer. Soumare would be a great addition to start the freshening up of our squad, which is so desperately needed!

Love the look of Soumaré but don't think he's what we actually need right now - Florentino Luis is what we actually need - Someone who will provide protection to the back 4 and get stuck into tackles with precision timing and excellent reading of the game. Soumaré seems to be more of a technical version of Sissoko - a dribbler who can transition the play, quickly. What we actually need is a Kanté and a tackler who reads the game and breaks up play - We can make do with Sissoko for the moment for quick transitions up the pitch. It's Wanyama we need to replace.

That said, Soumaré is an outstanding talent and if he's available perhaps we should be in for him regardless - and especially given our connections with Sacramento.

Found Liverpool's from against City in November.

That video of Florentino reminds me of how Onomah played for England a couple of years back. Totally ran the show from DM. I wonder why Poch never even tried him there?

but yeah, Florentino seems to be what we are missing. Has leadership skills too, captaining the Portugal under 20’s is that?
