So anyone want to do the academy team of the decade as everyone is doing something along those lines and I'm bored.

My criteria is it would be those that you saw play for us at an u19 age group. So should generally capture when top players were at their peak before declining due to poor handling. It also means, while I personally rate them as two of the best academy players I've seen I wouldn't include TOB and Kirby as they were either not playing for us then or weren't performing as well then. Hope that makes sense. Similarly, I wouldn't necessarily include a late developer, i.e. someone that really started to perform at u21 level, however you're welcome to include them if you think they were THAT good at u19 level. I'll do my team from memory, but I'm sure there's a possibility I may change it once I see other posters remind me of players that have left.

Do what ever formation you fancy.
----------------Archer
KWP - Tanganga - Veljkovic - Cirkin
---------Onomah - Skipp-------------
Oduwa-------Edwards---------Pritchard
----------------Kane-------------------

--------------------------Archer----------------
---------------Eyoma - Tanganga - Ogilvie
KWP-------------------Veljkovic---------------------Cirkin
----------------Onomah--------Pritchard----------
-------------------------Edwards---------------------
--------------------------Kane-----------------------

Subs: Austin, Hinds, Binks, White, Skipp, Bentaleb, Parrott

Rough subs bench, I'll tidy mine up once I see what other players I may be missing that deserve consideration

Don't know why I've done two. Ogilvie, Cirkin, Brown and Tsaroulla are all top LBs. I had put Binks in there but replaced him with Ogilvie at LCB. Could probably put him in there.

Parrott v Kane probably seen a lot more of Parrott at u18s but remember Kane being class and u18s but then so is Parrott so
You forgot about poor Winks! Or does he not get into the side?

Clarke may well go on to be a great player for us but at £10m it does feel like we’ve massively overpaid for him.

Massively? These days if you can put on your boots and tie your laces you're already worth 5 million.

Let's see in a couple years.

interesting that @IGSpur and @edson both have kane over parrott. i got into youth football too late to have seen kane in his earlier years but my impression of him was that whilst he always showed he had the ability and brains to make it, he lacked the physical/athletic qualities to make the best use of it. parrott on the other hand has been pretty mega since day one near enough and his superior physique has allowed him to show his ability on a more consistent basis.

not going to do a team as i'm iffy on a couple of positions, particularly in goal, but my top five in terms of ability and performances would roughly be:

#1 edwards
#2 onomah
#3 parrott
#4 skipp
#5 kwp

not a great strike rate so far unfortunately but hopefully skipp and parrott can buck the trend. i do think they have fewer weaknesses than the other three so that should work in their favour - though if they don't get their chances soon then they may well try their luck elsewhere. cirkin is pushing kwp but injuries haven't allowed him to get a consistent run, i think it's clear that he has a better chance of making it though given his superior physical traits. winks probably just outside this group, he was always one of our better players but it wasn't until the age of 20 that he really stepped up and started putting in high quality performances.

I'm surprised no one has included Mason in their 10 year team's. My team would probably be:

---------------------------Archer--------------------------
KWP-----------CCV--------Veljkovic----------Ogilvie
-----------------Onomah-------Bentaleb------------------
----Falque-----------Mason-------------Townsend
---------------------------Kane-----------------------------

Mason was a funny one because as you know the Mason at youth level was a different player to what people saw in the first team.

Mason at youth level missed a lot of football with injuries in the early days, he was more of a attacking player back then and he would score a lot of goals, I think he sacrifice parts of his game in order to make it with the first team and at youth level he was more of a touch player.

I remember him doing very well at Yeovil Town on loan and they liked him a lot.

I haven't seen anywhere near enough youth football to give a sincere appraisal. But some interesting insights. One thing I'm very suprised about is not one person mentioning Tom Carroll. I thought he was always a big player in the youth team, but never transferred it essentially to being a dominant first team player. I always thought we fucked up with him by playing him further back, which I understand was the coaches idea. He did play as a striker originally iirc. No one rated him as a youth?

Carroll had limitations for me, he was a good passer of the ball but you need a lot more than that to survive as a cm in the Premier league.

I do remember him playing a lot of u21 football and not playing very well in a lot of them matches, if he had no pass on he was done because he could not beat a man when he needed too.

One other player that done well at youth level was Jamie Ohara.

Carroll was peripheral at U18 level . He only broke into the side in the final few months of his scholarship and interestingly it was as a left back where he had the time and space to show off his passing.

Does Andros Townsend qualify?

Yes I think so, he was in the u18s in the 09/10 season

Na he wouldn't get in. Miller was a better player at u18 level.

It was definitely a close one with Kane and Parrott. I think Kane just looked a bit clunky and cumbersome, and less eye catching on the ball. But from what I remember he was a great finisher, had an excellent shot, was a quality passer and linked up play so well. I was a lot younger watching him so might have been more impressed and hold better memories but he was a top player. I never quite got why he got so much stick...well I do, expectations are always placed so highly on academy players, and very little time. I do concede that I may be mixing some of his year group but I thought he was a quality striker up until the season we made the u21 final and he was 19 then. EIther way Parrott is also quality.

Top 5 is hard. I'd personally prob put Milos in instead of Parrott, Skipp or KWP

I didn't watch Mason at u18, but I'd be surprised if he was better than Edwards in that position, especially as Edwards was the best player in his age group for England around these times and wanted by all of the top clubs. I don't know if Mason was hunted like that.
