As we all know, It used to be rife. Its not so bad now but (in my experience) a lot depends on where you sit. If you sit anywhere near the front when an opposition player comes close there's a chance some idiot will call him all sorts of names and the world 'poof' will be in there somewhere.

Further up in the stands not so much, if at all, like you, when I'm sitting further away I can't remember hearing any. I'm not saying it's rampantly rife but I reckon it goes on a lot more than we might think.
B&HA fans get it all the time.

@riggi, I apologise if that came across aggresive or offensive, it's been quoted now so I can't delete it. What I will say is that I think your posts today and in the past show that perhaps it's not just schoolchildren who need to be targetted.

Apologies once again.

Im glad you apologised because you just essentially equated my poor tweet about having a train delay to being a homophobe. Oh and cretin.

I’m going to leave it there as this is a match thread.

I hope @freeeki understands what I’m saying and even if he disagrees on my view point, doesn’t think I’m a raging homophobe.

About racism and homophobia, I'm sure we can leave those issues with Lo Celso and he'll sort it out on behalf of all of us.

I stand by my apology, it was genuine, and no, I don't think you're a homophobe but I think some of your attitudes are out of date, intolerance of poor mental health, describing a campaign to change society's values for the better as shite. I didn't call you a cretin, I said it made you come across as a cretin.

As you say, it's the match thread. let's move on.

Yeah, I can see why the racism campaign is needed, there are loads of incidents at football, but as you say I honestly cant even remember the last time I heard any homophobia at football.

Saying that it would've been great if all our players were getting off with each other as goal celebrations this week.

But that’s because no gay players have come out. I guarantee you if we had 3 or 4 gay players in our starting line up they’d get dogs abuse from opposition fans. People this they are above retribution at football matches in the language they use.

I guess I just look at it differently. I don’t see 40 something year olds (surley the average age of a match going fan) changing their attitude because of a rainbow.

This is a society issue and should be focussed on in schools in my opinion.

Honestly haven’t heard any homophobia at a game in 10 plus years and I think that’s down to a society attitude shift rather than a campaign by football clubs.

It’s more what the rainbow represents, rather than the rainbow itself.

You may not have heard any homophobic remarks at a game for a long time - that’s great, and I don’t disbelieve you - but at the same time, there are 500 Premier League players at any one time, and yet, we’ve never had one be openly gay (or even openly not straight).

Statistically speaking, there are probably at least 20 gay players in the EPL right now.

Whether we like it or not, it’s still a taboo. We’re going in the right direction, but we’re not there yet.

I think you are misinterpreting my view. I think these things are key but I don’t see token symbols (chucking up a rainbow on the stadium) as a catalyst for change.

I agree though, let’s move on.

That's just mob mentality...everyones brave when they're in a crowd.

I must admit I need to tone my bad language down at football matches. If there’s no kids nearby, I really let it out. Gets rid of a lot of pent up anger!

My mum and dad wouldn’t let me ever swear in the house. Yet when I went to football my dad would always say “don’t repeat what you hear in here out there” and I didn't.

I do agree with you that there is a taboo, or at least this unspoken don't ask-don't tell notion. But at the same time though, part of equality to me is that one shouldn't have to be "the gay footballer". People just shouldn't care to such a degree that it truly didn't matter one way or the other. So there was no taboo, but just genuinely a lack of interest/controversy.

Lighting up the stadium isn’t a catalyst for change on its own merit, you’re right, but it is symbolic of Tottenham Hotspur saying “we recognise this issue, and we as a club refuse to be neutral on it”.

If you’d told me at 14 that one day my club would light the ground up to tell the world they stand with people like me, I wouldn’t have believed you.

I appreciate it means nothing to 90% of the fan base, but to a small number of us, it means everything.

It’s weird isn’t it, and I can imagine the agents must play a part.

You also have so many different cultural backgrounds, and of course regular close proximity in the changing rooms. Plus without meaning to generalise too much, footballers usually aren’t the smartest bunch.

What surprises me is the lack of former players coming out.

Good for the future that we can score goals without him creating goals, but until he leaves he's still important as we may need him, like in that champions League match

I’d rather Mourinho built a team using players that will actually be with us next season.

Indeee! Only one former PL player has come out, to date, as far as I’m aware, which was Thomas Hitzlsperger.

In reality it’ll all be irrelevant in five years’ time when CR7 comes out...

Saw who I guess was a Korean guy outside the ground today in a spurs kit with a poster saying “have a photo with Son”. He didn’t really look like him except he was Asian. It didn’t say anything about payment for said photo. All very strange. Just thought I’d share!
