30% of Rooney's international goals came in meaningless friendlies. 80% of his goals came against opponents that were significantly poorer than England at the time. He managed 1 World Cup goal, despite playing in 3 World Cups. After his breakout campaign in Euro 2004, which he did perform well in, it took him another 12 years to get his next European Championship goal. And that was a penalty.

And that's not even counting overall performances. Even taking away Kane's goals in the last 18 months, he has been instrumental in a lot of his teammates goals scored. Particularly Sterling's goals. 3 assists plus a 'hockey assist' against Bulgaria shows what I mean. Rooney, nor Shearer, has dominated teams as regularly as Kane has in the last couple of years.

Yet everyone in the media reveled in seeing Rooney climb up the all time scoring charts. I struggle to recall any pundit playing down his record because most goals were either meaningless or against poor opposition.

Kane had a fairly slow start to his international career, largely down to Hodgson favouring a declining and undeserving Rooney. 5 goals in 17 games over 2 years while Hodgson and Rooney were there. 26 goals and 11 assists since Southgate took over, including a World Cup Golden Boot. England are damn lucky to have him. Any other country would be celebrating his accomplishments, instead we have people bizarrely trying to belittle him.

Tossers.

I feel like he’s the most disrespected man in football, in the pub talking to a few lads (supporters of all different clubs) and they loathe to really give him much praise...i look at his numbers and the level he’s been performing at pretty much since he came on the scene and it fucking baffles me...absolutely world class and a proper captain, to think he’s only 26 and the work he’s put in to be where he is i am absolutely honoured to watch him every week for my club and i think when its all said and done and hes top scorer for England and achieved all he will in the rest of his career these same sort of lads will recognise that he’s a generational striker and not many players would be fit to lace his boots.

Few opposition fans are respectful of him. There are countless threads on rival forums making excuses as to how he's achieved what he has, giving very little praise en route.

He’s one of those who won’t really be respected by the masses until they retire

and others:

nostalgia eh. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Shearer#International
Shearer's one hat trick was against Luxembourg. Kane has 3.

Kane has more goals in less games. Opposition standard is fairly similar, i'd say.

Love Kane, and his goal rate is ace and almost impossible to compare eras, but this is blatantly not true. Yes he scored a hat trick against Luxembourg but look at the competitive list...

Shearer - 22 against 15 teams in 36 games

4 Luxembourg
3 Poland
2 Germany
2 Holland
1 Argentina
1 France
1 Sweden
1 Switzerland
1 Scotland
1 Romania
1 Bulgaria
1 Turkey
1 Tunisia
1 Georgia
1 Moldova

Kane - 26 against 14 teams in 34 games

4 Bulgaria
4 Montenegro
3 Panama
2 Czech Republic
2 Lithuania
2 Malta
2 Tunisia
1 Croatia
1 Colombia
1 Switzerland
1 Scotland
1 Kosovo
1 Slovenia
1 San Marino

Kane has 2 goals against current FIFA top 10 teams (Croatia, Colombia). You can get to 3 if you go top 20 (Switzerland) and 5 if you go to 30 (Tunisia). Takes to include teams from the top 50 to get to 7 goals (Czech Republic).

Meanwhile, Shearer has 7 just against the top 10 in 96-98 era (Germany, France, Argentina, Holland, Sweden)

Also England are ranked 4 in the world now whereas were 10th-12th in Shearer’s day

(Also Nations League would have been friendlies and classified as non competitive in Shearer’s day, so Kane actually has a bigger match pool)

Let's substitute Kane's 1 goal against Croatia in the Nations League for Shearer's 1 goal in Le Tournoi against France, then.

England were ranked lower because in 1994 they didn't qualify for the World Cup and in 1995-96 they didn't have to qualify for Euro 96. Still played friendlies though, and the Umbro Cup - and Shearer went through a 12 game drought and was also injured.

Kane's 5 goals in friendlies (Germany, Turkey, France x2, Nigeria)
Shearer's 8 goals in friendlies (France, Greece, USA x2, Portugal x2, Hungary, Belgium)

Kane's 14 goals in Euro qualifiers (Lith, SM, Switz, Cze x2, Monten x4, Bulg x4, Kosovo)
Shearer's 6 goals in Euro qualifiers (Swe, Lux x4, Bulg)

Kane's 5 goals in WC Qualifiers (Sco, Lith, Slov, Malta x2)
Shearer's 7 goals in WC Qualfiiers (Tur, Mold, Pol x3, Georgia)

And then there are tournament matches.
K 6 (Tun x2, Pan x3, Col)
S 8 (Switz, Scotland, Ned x2, Tun, Arg, Ger, Rom)

Lots of the same teams appear: Poland, France, Switzerland, Tunisia, Bulgaria.
Similar type of opponents. The 3rd/4th placed team in a group and the teams usually mentioned when critics bring up the 'pre qualifying stage for minnows' talk every so often.
Both scored in tournaments

England are probably better now, and it's also true there are more nations to play against, but I still feel it's similar.

Lots of the same mid ranked teams appear, for sure, because the European pool is the European pool. Beyond that not really sure what your thrust is.

Friendlies aren’t included for a reason. Point remains Kane has barely scored against the top 20 in competitive fixtures whereas Shearer scored fairly regularly against the top 10. The idea that they’re comparable sides is nonsense, it’s clear as day that Shearer scores more against top teams.

Sure, he had a friendly drought, but that’s not the point. The whole centre of discussion is Shearer’s goals came against better opposition and that’s undoubtably true - more than a quarter of his competitive goals came against the top 10 whereas Kane barely scored a quarter of his against the top 50.

Actually goes to show how tournament structures have changed meaning teams can go further without playing anyone of note. There are more games that are considered “competitive” against lesser teams. Kane’s tournament opposition has been very average, you can only score against who you play and you would hope/assume this will naturally widen but who knows.

But certainly feels like FIFA’s widening of tournaments has meant the big clashes happen less and less.

I hate the weaker team argument. Surely as a striker's job is to score goals it doesn't matter who they are against, no? You can only beat and score against who is in front of you. Not Kane's fault (or any other striker in history) if they're selected for these games, is it?

On another note, all those opposition supporters won't appreciate Harry until long after he has retired. We, on the other hand, appreciate his qualities now. We can also see that he isn't just a goal scorer, but can pick and see a pass, too. His all round vision is up there. So under appreciated and more hated by others (still don't get why when he is the role model kids should be looking up to and does nothing wrong?).

I’ve spoke to this with fans of other clubs at Wembley, be they there for the away team or simply taking the chance to watch premier league football. I feel the proper fans, they absolutely get it. Ive got lots of West Ham mates and most are what I’d call proper football fans who know a bit ( until it comes to their club of course! ) they all think Kane is brilliant.

Twitter divs bash Kane but there’s so many people out there who like football because it’s popular and it gives them something to try and be part of. No real genuine feeling for the game. These are the types who will slag him off I find.

The subject of Kane could actually be used to determine if someone has any idea about the game I reckon. Anyone who can’t see how great a player he is, well they should just be ignored on all matters football.

He’s bland, he doesn’t wear stupid clothes, have stupid tats or flaunt his wealth. He’s from a typical working class background. He isn’t fast and his qualities don’t lend themselves to creating a great player on FIFA or some other bullshit computer game ( as in he isn’t known for being super fast or a dribbler )
Him training hard, working hard then going home to family and playing golf on his days off, that’s not to be admired. He needs a Maori tattoo, divorce his wife and then start taking photos of himself next to private planes, Bentleys and far flung holiday destinations whilst spouting some nonsense ‘believe it to achieve it’ inspirational quotes to capture the imagination of the moronic masses.

Also, shades, he needs to start wearing shades all the time.

Like the boy
Great player by any yardstick.
has adapted and developed his game.

I will follow him
to whichever team he goes to
in the event of total breakdown at Spurs.
Except Man.Utd
or City
or Liverpool.
Real Madrid would be fine
as that's my other team.
Role model par excellence.

Bang on. In this world where instagram is quite possibly the most important thing to kids aged 12 upwards, people like Kane aren’t “cool” as they don’t flaunt their lifestyle. Kane is the perfect role model for young kids these days, work hard, know your strengths and how to use them and also work hard on your weaknesses.

Luckily it appears a lot of his team mates at spurs and England realise this and talk about him with such admiration and you can see that he is a great captain off the field, even though he isn’t a “shouty” one on it.

Something that is annoying me a little of late is the whole ‘Henderson should be captain, not Kane’

Previously, any decent England team had leaders all over the pitch. That was accepted and encouraged.

How many top teams have England played in competitive games for Harry to seriously add to these numbers though? I have him playing only 7 times (3x va Croatia, 1x Belgium in a dead rubber 3rd place play off game, 2x Spain & 1x vs Colombia, whereby Harry has scored 2 goals).

How is he supposed to score in competitive games against the likes of Argentina, Germany, Brazil etc if he's never played against them in competitive football? All he can do is score against them in friendly games if that's the case, which he has done 2x vs France and 1x vs Germany.

2 goals in 7 against top 10 teams in the world in competitive football, another 3 thrown in including friendly games so 5 in 9. Not really that bad is it? (I've added Germany in there because clearly they are a top team, they just had a shit spell that damaged their rankings, no way are they 16th in the world I don't care what the rankings say)

Shearer also had twice as long in the England team. Let's see what Harry's stats look like in four years.

Both great players anyway.

I do literally say that, twice. I’m not saying it as a slight on him.

Once Harry is finished for England, people will laugh whenever anyone suggests comparing his scoring record against Shearer’s on the international stage. Fvck, he’s still got 16 games to reach Shearer’s total caps. Once he hits 60 caps the comparisons will have moved beyond Shearer and on to Owen’s record I suspect.

Kane will have moves passed Owen's record by the end of 2020. Realistically he'll have tonight, realistically 4 friendly games or so in the build up to the Euro 2020s, 4-7 games at the Euros and probably about 4-6 games after once the 2020-21 season has started. Potentially anything from 14-19 games to score 9 more goals. I fancy he'll batter it.
