Dier lacks the mobility to be a top-class DM. When he first played there he was probably 15-20 pounds lighter than he is now. He’s not slow per se but he lacks the lateral quickness needed to close down space as our opponents’ attacking moves develop and is constantly getting passed around in midfield. We need a real athlete at the DM position.

That being said Dier has everything necessary to be an excellent CB. Hope we see him given a run of matches next to Sanchez.

This can be mitigated if he plays as a DM who drops into a CB position when our fullbacks bomb forward. Basically, his role wouldn't be a 'destroyer' as such.

NDombele, Lo Celso, Sonny and Lamela (or Alli) can cover the ground if you don't think he's quick enough.

Obviously a DM with the ability of Dier plus amazing mobility would be ideal, but the fact we don't have that isn't the end of the world.

The defensive rebuild (including fullbacks) is our priority now anyway, so we'll probably have to stick with Dier.

I swear if Poch benches him today after his best game in about 18 months I'll do absolutely nothing but be a little bit miffed.

And yet, perhaps after playing only his fourth game this season, and with the health issues, he might not yet be up to playing again so quickly.

I hope he is and hope he starts, but we need to stop this.

Be very pleasantly surprised if he starts.
I think Poch will play same players as before and expect a different outcome and then be surprised and disappointed.
Same shit, different day.
My confidence in Poch has gone.
Be amazed if Winks and Eriksen dont start.

Yeah I reckon Alderweireld will start, although he actually hasn’t been too bad this season, might just be a case of him and a Vertonghen together are now a bit too slow and need Sanchez and his youthful pace alongside them.

We do have to be careful with Dier too due to his health issues but once he is fully fit and healthy logic would state he perhaps starts more.

He isn't very good. Having Dembele next to him a few seasons back masked just how average he is. He is never going to be a quality CB or DM.... jack of all trades master of none type of squad filler.

Yes rubbish today.

All I would say is his first start at the back in probably 2 years. Who was in the middle to receive a pass ? Not all his fault.

Infuriating how a player that regards himself as an intellectual, is such a poor thinker of the game with terrible concentration levels. All of Poch's generals are failing him.

Thing is he kept trying to play the ball out with his left foot and he would either under hit it or just pass it to the sheffield players and then follow up and point at Davies and son like they were at fault for his shitty passing.
