How Martin Jol laid the foundations for a brighter Tottenham future

White Hart Lane’s finale was remarkable in so many ways, not least because the image of Daniel Levy on the jumbotron screen in the north-east corner was met with a resounding cheer. It’s been over a decade since one of the most hapless, disappointing and downright reprehensible moments of ENIC’s reign. The scene was a UEFA Cup tie in October 2007, a game which Spurs lost 2-1 to Spanish minnows Getafe.

It would be hard to find anyone with a bad word to say about BMJ. Funny to think that he sort of fell into the job after Santini left.

I think there was a succession plan in place. Certainly he was a high profile number 2. There was almost a campaign on SC for him to join up.

Also, I had the pleasure of meeting him at The Finale. Because he didn’t want the limelight he didn’t go out onto the pitch but he had a Big Martin Jol hug for me after. He’s got no hair but we don’t care...

It happened a lot quicker than Levy anticipated but Jol certainly seized the opportunity with both hands! He was very approachable wasn't he. I never got a hug but I remember seeing him at Bromley for a Palace v Spurs reserve match and he was happy to sign autographs for everyone.

Loved the guy, was gutted when he was sacked in the most undignified way possible.

And yet I remember a large chunk of SC saying things like "tactically inept", "taken us as far as he can", "will never win us a trophy" in the scramble to appoint flavour of the month Juande.

Seems as if we haven't learnt.

BMJ brought the fun, and the respect back. It was his side that won that LC.

Keano & Berbatov, Carrick & Brown, Arron Lennon and Edgar fooking Davids.

Mental that we sacked him. IIRC it was those toads Commolli and Kelmsley that shafted him?

I see a lot of similarities between Poch and BMJ. It seems both reached their respective ceilings and both were denied the players they really needed (I still believe had we got Petrov and Distin we would have gone a lot further).

Didn't he end up getting Zokora as a Carrick replacement ( ) and behind the scenes the fitness coach was sacked and never replaced?

If I recall correctly from what was being said on the forums at the time; things went sour when Frank Arnesen left as they had a great working relationship. Damien Comolli came in who didn't really work well with Jol; Comolli wanted Ramos in.

I used to love that team. We may not have been the best but it was a fun time and we were exciting to watch.

I always wonder what would of happened had Chelsea not stolen Arnesen. That was the real sea change in our approach at the club.

He was almost as bad as Poch with his subs though!

And got him. I must admit I bought into that deal, and like everyone else was bitterly disappointed with the 2 points from 8 games debacle that followed.

Ah, the days of Frank Arnesen, when we used to sign a player every 15 mins :D.

Still live the bloke and still angry at the ****ish way he was removed. He deserved better treatment and is probably still my favourite Spurs manager.
