I'd still rather we didn't do it.

I saw a statistic a while ago showing that the majority of long clearances in the PL go to an opposition player.

We know there are risks in playing it out from the back, but it would seem that there are probably more risks overall in booting it out.

Our generally poor form in 2019 has maybe disguised the fact that we almost certainly benefit from greater possession during a match as a result of not booting the ball upfield from goal kicks and the like, and the price we pay is the occasional disaster like Saturday's. Overall though, I prefer us to play that way, and just try to reduce the errors, obviously.

On numerous occasions we've faffed around at the back and invited pressure that has resulted in us 'booting it out' in a far more dangerous position than a standard long clearance. I'm not suggesting we should start hoofing the thing every time but we should certainly be a bit more cautious about when we start pissing about near our own goal line, or at least have a better exit strategy than passing it backwards and forwards across the back line, until we're stuck in a corner.

Yes, it drives me nuts when I see us being pressed closer and closer to the goal, and then end up panicking, giving away a free-kick or at best a throw in and at worst, of course a goal like on Saturday.

But Pochettino once explained that the other reason for not booting it out is to draw the opposition deeper into out half so as to open up their defence and give us the chance to mount a fast attack. A bit like Saturday's 2nd goal.

We just need to do it better, and get our pace and, more importantly, our overall team confidence back.

I understand the theory behind it but, in practice we invariably end up going side to side on the edge of the opposition box in any case. We shouldn't be doing it with teams that push right up onto us either since we usually end up panicking and hoofing the thing anyway.
