Winks makes far more forward passes than people are giving him credit for, several times in the game yesterday he was actively looking to pass forward and couldn't due to a lack of options, which you could see him visibly complain about after.
I remember exactly the same criticisms being made of Carrick and Modric at times about playing sideways and backwards passes. That's just the nature of the position if you're the deepest midfielder and charged with recycling possession then a lot of the time your best option is to go backwards or sideways to the full backs, there's nothing wrong with that. He was easily our best player in the first half against Villa and was a large part of the reason that we were able to sustain pressure on the edge of their box effectively in the time he was on.
