Wonder if it’s purely a case that a decision has been made to not renew Jan’s contract next summer. With that in mind and also with Toby leaving as well next summer Potch has decided to rotate them this season to give a chance for Sanchez and other centre backs to play along side them and learn for both a Toby’s and Jans experience.

One thing i do like (whatever the reason behind the dropping of Jan is) is that Poich clearly shows everyone at the club whos in charge. I belive he wont take no bullshit from anyone, that be Jan, Rose or CE.

Do you have anymore 'in the know' on this? Feces samples, photos, videos of him using the public toilets at WHL...that sort of thing

TTIUWP. :)

No way should Jan have been left out of the starting line up for anything other than lack of fitness. I always have a problem with players being penalised for non-football related reasons i.e internal politics. Apparently, as they said in the TV commentary, he was fully fit to play.

The main reason why you'd ever split Vert and Toby for tactical reasons would be a fear that they could caught for pace by Villas forwards....Sanchez being quicker. Ironically, as it turned out, Sanchez got too tight, rolled and caught the wrong side. Despite his pace he couldn't get back past the opponent. Just a bit surprised that Poch would risk an upset in this squad considering the fact that Rose, Toby and Eriksen would already be unsettled

Maybe there is no upset in the squad at all (apart from individual contractual issues) and people like you are the ones making a big deal out of something you don't have a lot of info on?

By that token why play Toby or Danny who are more injury prone . Rose avoided pre season to find a new club.
I don't know whether you really said what you meant here, but "avoided pre-season" seems to fit into a narrative of acrimony where there really isn't any. Some might consider this "a bit Liverpool", but I really think that as fans we have a responsibility to not fuel the perceived dramas around the club. Nothing we've seen or heard from Rose since he came back into the team at the end of last season has indicated any kind of issue between him and the club but, for a number of reasons, both parties have made the grown-up decision that if a suitable offer presents itself then he will leave.

Similarly, Jan could have been left out on Saturday for a number of reasons, the worst being that Poche feels he needs a kick up the arse for one reason or another. But we know that Poche is an expert man-manager and that Vertonghen is a consummate professional and club stalwart - there isn't realistically going to be any major drama going on.

Edit: What @Hakkz said!

We have a massive squad. With only 7 able to be selected on the bench I think will increasingly see Poch choose defensively flexible players as subs and rest the specialist players not starting. For example, Dier can play DCM, CB and RB. Aurier can play RB and LB. that makes them better subs than Verts or Davies (although both are better in their specialist positions than Dier and Aurier) as it means we can have more game changers on the bench. When Dele, Sessegnon, Lo Celso, Davies and Son are all available that means strong players will not be in the 18 on a regular basis. Especially if Eriksen stays.

Assuming this is our strongest side on paper:

Lloris
Foyth Toby Verts Rose
Ndombele Winks Lo Celso
Erisken
Kane Son

That leaves these players fighting for 7 bench spots:

Gazza
KWP
Aurier
Davies
Sessegnon
Sanchez
Tanganga
Dier
Sissoko
Wanyama
Skipp
Dele
Moura
Lamela
Parrott

Poch will disappoint someone every week. It also shows how hard it will be for Skipp and Parrott to get any minutes. Plus Sanchez is our future at CB and he now needs to play week in week out, especiallly if Toby and Verts don’t sign new contracts.

Whilst I get where you’re coming from, it doesn’t fit this as Verts can play LB & CB both better than Aurier can play any of his positions.

I think there are offensive & tactical elements to round out your point, as you might argue Aurier and, particularly, Dier provide more attacking/ tactical options from the bench whilst still also covering Sanchez/Rose.

My concern is that Toby is 100% leaving next summer. Jan is likely to leave the summer after if not next summer at the same time due to his age and contract situation. So, we need to be looking for 1 world class CB to partner either Sanchez or Foyth.

We have already started the rebuild this summer but next summer we need a world class CB and someone to replace Eriksen as I still think it's likely he will leave this summer.

Where did the earlier small injury info come from ? Was it a case the club leaked out a small injury then Pochettino went against that ?

The Dutch don’t hold back. They speak their mind. Sometimes come across as arrogant. Edgar D@vids once had a fight with Martin Jol at training.
Nothing wrong with a frank exchange of views as it were. I’m sure Kane has plenty to say at times
