Most of the pundits in the UK are ex-players who don't know much about players outside of the PL and Champions League. They are talking heads, mainly there as recognisable faces who can offer 'been there and done it' insight.

I'm willing to bet that most of them haven't watched Ndombele or Lo Celso much, if at all.

On the flip side, literally all of the proper European football journalists and the statty, nerdy types who you find on Twitter and tactics blogs are amazed that we signed these two players. They just get less air time, if you listen to radio instead of podcasts, so the opinions don't reach that far into the public conscience

That said, it's always good to keep a low profile and let the pundits focus on other teams. We have been treated this way before every season for god knows how long and I'm fine with it - it certainly takes the pressure off our new boys.

I've got a feeling TN and GLC will be being talked about A LOT very soon though...

He did yes I'd forgotten that:)

A few people on transfer deadline day including Ian Holloway who is Skys lower league *expert* and across a few different media platforms used Sess as a buy because Tripps left, its criminal how many pundits dont know thier players.

He also said that Sessegnon was a logic and good transfer now that Trippier has been sold. He have no idea what he is talking about.

I didn't think there'd be much Steve Nichol was worse at than playing football, but obviously punditry is it. Just about everything he says that isn't MU is utter shite.

ESPN's coverage is shite. Way to Americanised which doesn't even use correct terminology. He fits in well there talking absolute bollocks.

The whole deadline day coverage on SSN was awful. Barely mentioned Lo Celso, yet spoke at length and in ‘depth’ about the Zaha transfer that didn’t happen

And the brains trust of experts seemed utterly non-plussed by us signing Sessegnon - one of the most exciting English prospects around - yet they fawned about a washed up, washed out Andy Carroll going back to Newcastle because his career has failed because he has been utterly unprofessional

I mean I know SSN are shite, but even by their standards, yesterday's coverage was perplexing in the extreme.

If United had been signing Sess it would of topped the day on there.

None of their studio guests had obviously seen GLC play.

That shows up Sky Sports for what they are, they can only really comment on players they know. It wouldn't have hurt to get some foreign panelists in and talk about players coming from overseas but I don't think that would have appealed to the casual fan.

Disappointed in Barry Glendenning on the Football Weekly pod - this window proves that Poch is in complete control over signings [not matter what he claims!]. To just toss off this idea he won't be here by the end of the season. I just find it lazy. Poch rightly demanded investment and boy did he get it. He wanted to build for the next 5 years and for me, that's clearly begun.

And yeah, caveat, just how bad Zidane is at Real worries me. But we weathered that before.

Well they did talk about Spurs’ signings a bit but I shouldn’t have to remind everyone that the deadline day show is about entertainment. And, to capture an audience greater than hard core football geeks, they will always talk about players a general audience knows, anything with a bit of drama, players going to big clubs, etc. the Zaha thing was about a player that most general fans know about, that put in a transfer request, that was wanted but a few biggish clubs, etc. from an PL club to a PL club. Such a story is far more interesting that the transfer of a player few general fans know about, that went relatively smoothly, from a foreign club few follow, e.g. Lo Celso. GLC was only going to one club, wasn’t kicking up a fuss, and while the haggling dragged on for a bit, there just wasn’t a lot of drama to it. Hardcore PL fans know it’s a big deal for Spurs but the general audience has never heard of him.

How long did they go on and on a few years ago about that player who thought he had been transferred and travelled on his own volition to the target club without the transfer going through....it was dramatic. Andy Carroll may be shite and washed up but everyone knows him and his leaving a London club for his childhood club back home is a good story for the masses.

Good business doesn’t always make for good tv on transfer day.

And then they wonder why they can't get coaching jobs or if they do get fired quickly

Why should it matter whether we've heard of them or not?

What matters is whether they have something interesting to say, or in this case, are a bunch of dicks.

I'm talking of those 4 guys sky uses for their transfer show. I'd much rather hear about ndombele from a french football journalist or expert. You know someone who might have actually seen him play.

Sadly, you're spot on. Drama sells and if you went in to work during deadline day people won't be saying "Lo Celso and Ndombele are good buys" rather "Where will Zaha end up?"
