This isn't carte blanche to start posting heaps of crap in the mistaken belief you won't get a neg rep by the way.

I've made the suggestion before that members should have made 300 posts before they get neg rating privileges. It wouldn't solve the problem but it would at least stop the lurkers who abuse the system.

Another possibility would be to extend the power of the 'ignore' button. Not only would you not see the posts of people on 'ignore' but they won't see your posts either.

While most adults would agree that the ratings don't mean anything, what is annoying is that they clutter up your 'alerts' feed with their constant demand for your attention. Like trolls the best policy is just to ignore them. They are not worth engaging with.

The Profile posts are fantastic. It’s like I’ve stumbled into a playground but this time I’m not being chased off by the authorities.

WHY do people even bother with looking at the ratings they get for a post?
Surely you post because you have something you believe is of some sort of value to other members on here.
Some may dislike your post...… so what.... did it hurt you/cut you/break a limb/ or anything so dramatic?
Sticks and stones may break my bones etc.... etc …. etc.

Ha...I think 95% of my neg ratings are tit for tat. Maybe more
I once ‘spammed’ someone in the ITK thread because they’re we making jokes about mums and stuff, so they were spamming the thread.
He then went back through my profile and spammed about 10 of my comments, which weren’t spam? some people

In all honesty the only ratings I look for are informative ones, I rarely have enough time to read every post, so seeing the ratings makes it easier to see what I’m looking for

I have to confess (again) that I very rarely used a negative rating of any description.

However .. I mostly use my iPad when I am on this site and I scroll up with with right hand which sometimes
flicks the ratings cluster. Hence I do give out accidental ratings, most of you guys know I am a divvy, in my defence about once or twice a week I generally check out my 'ratings given' list in my profile and delete any bad 'uns.

I use a mobile phone. I've never gone back and checked my ratings given, but after your post, I thought I'd check all in order.

I haven't really got involved with the old 'negative ratings', maybe the odd dislike, but nothing more.

So I was very surprised to see that I'd actually awarded 4 spam ratings, for what appeared to me, to be perfectly reasonable posts

As you say, most probably as I've scrolled down by mistake.

Anyways, since removed, and I think I too will be checking once in a while from hereon in.

That's 4 spam ratings given by accident in 3 years. ;)

Every time something like this comes up ( and I'm sure it kicks off somewhere on SC at least once a year) I'm drawn into another internet world of PM's and profile post wars that I never knew existed.

I must admit when using my phone I've accidentally clicked a rating be it negative or positive. This happens even when just scrolling.
I guess there's no room for making a mistake?

Well to be fair, with the alert system it is impossible not to. And I think it's only human nature to be pleased if people think your posts are good/funny whatever and a bit irked if you feel you're getting negged constantly for no good reason ( although obviously never happened to me cos I'm so damn amazing :p).

As you say though, it really isn't worth more than 5 seconds of your time and certainly not worth getting into a tit for tat childish argument over. None of it really matters.

You have given the :stinkyfeet:spam rating 6 times (y)
Actually looking back for the first time at the ratings I’ve given over 15 relatively quiet but engaged years here is quite voyeuristic (weirdly, considering I’m looking at myself) and very illuminating.

787 ratings given, of which only 20 negative. I think online me is much nicer than I really am :)

Also made me realise how long I’ve been a member of this site. And how much I appreciate Rob and the Mods’ work over the years x
