Well that was disappointing to say the least. Kane was not fit to start and worryingly is having an ongoing detrimental effect on our team and its style of play.

Our front 4 were all anonymous. Son, Alli and Eriksen were subdued and did absolutely nothing. Sissoko was poor and was covered by Winks (motm) most of the night. No real complaints about the defence or keeper who could do nothing with the goals. Trippier who I thought would get ripped a new one by Mane stood up to the task well and Rose showed the passion and determination with his shift last night.

Really disappointed for Moura who I thought should have started in place of Alli. I felt dirty for suggesting to drop Alli but on last nights performance Poch needs to look at the team and see who has the minerals going forward to move the team in the right direction.

That game was winnable even with a gift from the ref after 25 seconds. Liverpool were poor by their own standards from the season gone, however onwards and upwards and this experience will hopefully galvanise the team and give Levy a shot in the arm to bring out the chequebook to make some fairly significant changes to the squad.
The morning after the night before. Congratulations to Liverpool great team. I thought Spurs dominated possession at times with no real threat. Liverpool were solid at the back, as I thought Spurs were. Liverpool were clinical Spurs were not. Our front four were poor. Overall the better team won. Couldn’t work out what was wrong with Spurs but hey that’s football. Well done Spurs onwards and upwards. We will all see what Mr Levy is made of now because if he doesn’t we will loose the best manager since Billy Nic..

We were gifted a decision like that against city and this time around it didn't fall in our favour, but what didn't help was Liverpool could afford to sit back because we had not a clue what to do in advanced positions so made it easy for them we were no threat at all.
Both Liverpool and ourselves have found it hard this season breaking down teams that sit deep. Thats where they dropped all their points as did we. Klopp did his homework. That penalty killed the game dead.

It can be argued that the penalty decision was within the letter of the law, but wasn’t in the spirit of the law and that’s where the officials have made their error.

We all know why handball is penalised: to prevent players from using their hands to gain an advantage for themselves or remove an advantage for their opposition. That’s the spirit of the law - the reason for the law.

However, a blanket ruling that states that any contact with a hand or arm, deliberate or otherwise is to be penalised is too harsh. For one thing, it is easy to abuse. Mane deliberately smacked the ball into Moussa. That’s not sporting. It’s canny and intelligent, but it’s unsportsmanlike. Yes, it could be argued that Moussa shouldn’t have had his armed raised, but the idea that one’s arms should be plastered to their sides throughout a game is ludicrous.

And that leads to the other problem with the rule: it’s not practical. I can’t remember who said it (could have been Rio Ferdinand) but the logical conclusion of this rule is that players have to play the whole game with their arms plastered to their sides if they want to avoid being penalised for handball. It’s simply illogical.

I can’t say that the ref got the call wrong based on the letter of the law, but he certainly got it wrong in maintaining the spirit of the law.

What rely riles me is that officials are defended with the argument that they have discretion and that they can interpret the laws of the game when making a decision and also that they have to strictly follow the laws of the game. Well, which is it? If they can interpret, then the ref last night should have used the context to allow play to continue. If they have to follow the rules strictly, then there are countless decisions that should never have been made or should have been made but weren’t. How about carding Allison for time wasting? Didn’t see that happen. But the rules are clear on that. Where was the sticking strictly to the letter of the law on that one?

This is a good post and I agree with this totally. I feel that the current rules are unrealistic and does not represent how football is played realistically.

UEFA's rules say that if the ball hits your arm and its in a unnatural position then it's a pen, can't see why there's a debate?

Where is that stated exactly in following text?

Difference was Llorente's arm was close to his body whereas Sissoko was doing an impression of the old days of a policeman on traffic duty in Piccadilly Circus.

uh....it didn’t hit his arm. That’s the whole point!

It did. Fact.

The decision wash harsh and gloats to take, but by the letter of the law it’s a pen.

@rez9000 has summed it up perfectly.

We all want someone to blame and say we were hard done by, but the reality is we we toothless last night.

Wtf was Sissoko doing anyway? Absolutely brainless to point your arm out like that in the box so close to the ball.

We can debate the injustice of it all but it was a stupid thing to do and we got punished for it in the harshest way possible.

Stop making excuses. Our players didn’t turn up. We hardly created a meaningful chance all game. Kane Alli and Son were anonymous. Liverpool just said to us, come on then, try to score, and we had fuck all.

Last night was pathetic I’m sorry. And Poch needs to look at some players and ask what honestly do they give us going forwards.

When was the last time Alli played well? Kane seems to have regressed. Eriksen is off. Son is just too streaky. To have such a streaky player win our POTY says it all.

We are a good team but we aren’t good enough to win trophies. That’s the fact. We got lucky getting to the final, the luck ran out last night.

Totally agree after 30 seconds we were effectively finished.

Thought against City we were “gifted” another handball

I feel quite deflated today. Not as bad as I thought I would feel but I can’t help but sympathise with little Lucas Moura. He should have started that game, he deserved it.

I've just realised an overlooked positive from last night.

If any Liverpool fans now want to shove their fingers in people's faces with the number of European Cups they've won, they'll need two hands to do so. This leaves their scrotums open and unprotected from attack.

This possession football is getting a bit tiring now, it seems all our players have had it drilled in to them so much that they are all scared to lose the ball, so much so we don't even put crosses in to the box any more, if you look compare our full backs to theirs its like night and day, they do not have shackles on and attack at every chance they get while we get in to great positions and go back to Toby, creep up the pitch another yard then repeat, we then have to find a pass through eleven of them. Its holding us back.
Poch had three weeks to get the lads ready, to come up with a plan to beat them, he failed miserably, the formation was ok but the tactics were awful. they were there for the taking but we are so stuck in our keep ball ways. It could have been so different. Gutted is an under statement.

That's the Fa's rules not UEFA's, they have different rules which doesn't help things.

Have a read of this, might help explain it.

Let's call a spade a spade... Liverscum had us as soon as they scored the penalty...

They let us have possession knowing we were going to do nothing with it and suffice to say I don't think we did enough. I was dissapointed that we didn't come out and really give it everything... The game will be a what if game for us for a while.

Am I proud of the journey? Damn straight but if we are going to continue to go down the grateful we are here route etc then we will never progress as a club.
