What is this thread about?
GAA stands for Gaelic Athletic Association....the thread features Irish sports....Gaelic Football and also Hurling which is the fastest game in the world that's played on grass and brilliant to watch. Check it out on YouTube
Hope that helps.

Right, so I'm going to be in Galway in 2 weeks time (weekend of Sat 8th) and was hoping to try and get in on a bit of this action. Unfortunately the fixture list on the GAA website may as well be in bloody gaeilige for all the sense it makes to me (and I don't dare google what the Crusty Ring Cup is :wideyed:)

So for the football it looks like it's the early rounds of the All-Ireland competition, and there's semis for the provincial tournaments, and for hurling there seems to be these various cups that I've not idea what they are and also some provincial championship games. As much as I'd like to go to a match, it's not looking massively likely given the already packed schedule, but i'd be keen to catch a bit of a match in the pub or something.

Is there any particular games that are the big ones to watch that weekend? Are these "random name"-cups a big deal or what? And is the Ulster Football semi-final a bigger deal than the Round 1 All-Ireland games etc.? I'm not bothered which of the two sports (although I think hurling looks more interesting) but if there's a big game on I wouldn't mind seeing it. I've just got no idea which are the good ones to watch. Any advice for this pathetic GAA virgin would be much appreciated.

I would suggest hurling if you haven’t a particular allegiance but Galway are playing away when you’re there. On your second weekend you have the Connacht final which is in Roscommon (against Galway) and is not a long drive from Galway at all. That should be decent if you can get tickets

Absolutely gutted....Galway lose to Dublin 3-19 0-24 and Wexford draw with Kilkenny 0-21 1-18 :cry:

I am not a 'sour grapes' person but listening to the commentary on Galway radio the referee was abysmal for the match missing frees etc for both sides. I shall watch the highlights and see if I agree......

PS
Anybody out there ????

Hope Galway are battered tomorrow. Birthday ruined by the Champions League Final, now face having Fathers Day ruined by the Connacht Final. Doesn’t help that my brother is a Liverpool fan born in Galway.

I half like your brother...(the Galway bit)...still gutted about tonight...the referee really wasn't up to controlling such an important match. Going to be a cracker tomorrow...can't see Roscommon battering us....just been reading this...
