Question: I’ve seen a bunch of posts mentioning us matching Liverpool and matching their shape to make sure we battle the midfield and cover our flanks however on the flip side what would be a formation/system that might catch them completely off guard? A tactic to blitz them early on, press like mad men and get a quick goal might be useful. We haven’t done that for ages and in our best recent season (16/17) we did exactly that for most games. We’ll have a fully fit squad on weeks of rest. Just wondering what’re some thoughts on this.

Or Maybe Poch goes for the rope-a-dope. Set up to bend, not break. Keep Liverpool at bay, but frustrate them. Force them to take more-and-more risks. They will eventually tire. Then in the 70th minute you make a three man substitution and bring on three speedsters up front to run at their tiring legs and get behind their fullbacks who have pushed too far forward.

Granted, that plan only works if the game is tied at the 70th minute!!!

So, you start with something like: 4-3-2-1

Lloris

Aurier
Toby
Jan
Davies

Sissoko
Dier
Rose

Eriksen
Dele

Kane

70th min... change it to: 4-3-3 (off comes Kane, Dele and Davies for Lamela, Moura and Son).

Lloris

Aurier
Toby
Jan
Rose

Sissoko
Dier
Eriksen

Lamela
Moura
Son

But again, this sorta crap only works if the game is tied up, etc.

Just having a bit of fun.

As for what the lineup will be. I really have no idea at all what Poch is thinking. Hopefully he can take a look at some of the teams that gave Liverpool trouble this year and see if we can emulate. 'Cos over the last little while we've been a bit overmatched by them. So, gotta consider changing something.

We are going to need a strong start , take the game to them. If they come out all guns blazing they will score early , like a lot of big sides have done against us this season

I think the opposite. In recent games we’ve matched up very well with them. Dominated them in both second halves on our last visits to Anfield and our first league game at Wembley, we tore them a new one.

We just need to sort out our start against them. We always seem to start slow and allow them on the back foot. We can’t really risk trying to come back in to the game. I’m not saying go all out from the off but if we could not give up an early goal, or better still, take the lead ourselves....well, game on!

Agree with this and it might just be me but, we always seem to gift them a goal as well, i.e individual errors rather than just great play by them. Frustrates the life out of me.

We wont be keeping a clean sheet so I think we go toe to toe and turn this into an end to end game... we attack they attack... whoever comes out on top - worthy winners.

Id play Sissoko as a one in front of the back four then Dele, Eriksen, Lucas and Son as a four behind Kane.

ATTACK THE FUCKERS.

Hugo
Aurier Toby Jan Rose
Sissoko Winks
Alli Eriksen Son
Kane

This is probably our strongest starting XI but I'd swap Alli and Eriksen.

It's incredibly harsh on Moura but it's either him or Sonny.

Toby - Sanchez - Jan - Rose across the back 4 might be even better but can't be making changes like that in a game like this.

Yeah Alli, Eriksen, Son can interchange like they have done in the past.
Would not want Toby out of position for a game of this importance despite our deficiencies at right back

Could be a way to go. Winks to cover the left side. Could even have Rose in for Moura and swap with Dele, but that would be harsh on Moura to miss out. Lamela and Llorente as attacking subs, Dier could even replace a midfielder or a CB. Wanyama as extra muscle if needed.

It’s anyones guess tho. COYS!

In my opinion we need to play the game like we did dortmund away... we knew they would come at us, we knew they would have chances and we knew they would dominate possession as there a good team... this for me was a turning point for spurs as we normally would try to go toe for toe, but we realized we had to adapt our game and do a professional job to get the game won...

I don't think we should try to 'out control' Liverpool, they've been very good at this all season and we, frankly, haven't. I think our best chance is to come out swinging and make it an end to end match. That's what we did against both City and Ajax.

As for line up, I keep switching. It looks like for the first time this season we'll have a full fit squad to pick from, this is what I'm certain about:

Lloris
_______ Alderweireld Vertonghen Rose
Sissoko _______
Lucas ___________ Eriksen
Kane
I just can't decide between Son, who has had a great season but tailed off in those last few matches quite badly, or Dele who has had a poor season by his standards but finished well and was instrumental in the semi. Additionally, while Winks next to Sissoko has been our best combination all season, he has been injured a long time and is in theory a less solid option than Dier or Wanyama. Then at right back there's the distinctly athletically lacking Trippier, but at least he does offer a good cross and has a good understanding with several players, or the more athletic Aurier who is prone to moments of severe rashness.

I have no doubt that I want to see Kane starting if fit, none of our other attackers comes close to bringing his quality.

The bench pretty much picks itself:

Gazzaniga, Vorm, AurierOrTrippier, Sanchez, Foyth, Davies, WinksOrWanyama, WinksOrDier, Skipp, Lamela, DeleOrSon, Llorente,

I think we have to play Moura, his pace and finishing will be useful as we'll have to take all the chances we get.

Lloris
Aurier Toby Jan Rose
Sissoko Winks
Lucas Eriksen Son
Kane

Wingers will pin back the FB, Eriksen will drop in to make the three but will also have the freedom he doesn't have in a two/wing that he often plays for us and we'll have two good passers in there to keep possession.

Dele will start, so will Son and I think Lucas will as well.

I really think it will be Winks who will be on the bench, with Eriksen beside Sissoko.

But Son and Dele are definite starters imo.

Dele literally never gets dropped when fit so that at least solves one of the problems. I don't have the answer for the winks/son dilemma though, I know what I think our strongest is but I feel it might be better to wait until 2nd half before we play Son/Kane/Moura uptop and maybe best to start with Winks.

I want this so much but I'm not sure if Eriksen has it in him vs their 3 man midfield, he lacks tenacity, I hope this has been pochs main focus during the training. Winks has been class in the Champions League, he seems to suit it but it's whether he's fit or not to start.

The buzz going round the training ground is immense...

Testament to the team that we are all having such trouble picking our team, immense effort by the squad and I feel sorry for any player who doesn't get the chance to start, Fergie was the master of making sure players on the bench knew their role and what a big part they still played in the days leading up to games, lets hope Poch follows suit.

It is a conundrum, but something has to give.
I guess it depends on who's in the best shape to start, and if Winks and kane are good to go you might find it's Lucas on the bench - that's my hunch, but I definitely start him.

Dele and Son will definitely start though. Just look how involved these two were in our goals against City. And Dele's pass to Lucas etc against Ajax.

They'll both start, 100 per cent on that.
