Got a little bit of ITK on Bellerin (and this probably goes for many modern footballers) from someone who worked at the club. He said that when Bellerin first broke through he was a good lad, focused and very committed to his own development. Then, when Barcelona started showing a bit of interest, it coincided with changing his agent/PR team who told him that he needed to pay more attention to his image and visibility on social media, and that would earn him the big money move to Barca. From that moment on he completely changed, stopped putting as much effort in improving as a player and started getting spotted at every social event.

I know that this is nothing earth-shattering but it just highlights the amount of scummy people and gold diggers advising these young impressionable players. They've made Bellerin believe that his image was more important than what he did on the pitch and that in order to be successful you need to 'look the part'. Imagine if this was KWP, we'd be spitting feathers. A sad reflection on the modern game, even if this is Arsenal.

He started out very promising and looked to have an even better career than he's currently having at arsenal, just a shame people close to him have to stick their noses in and fuck it up for him.

I agree. I wouldn't be surprised if this kind of thing accounts for a huge chunk of 'whatever happened to him' types.

He’s stumped up $2Bn of his own money for the Rams new stadium( which is costing $5bn) yet he cant find £30m for a CB for Arsenal. I think that’s massively telling imo.

Aubemeyang was a very interesting signing and a signing I wondered at the time if it was entirely necessary. Whilst he is top goal scorer and has generally been great value in that respect, I can't help but think it was a panic buy and they'd probably have been wiser spending that money restructuring their defence. They'd just spent 50m on Lacazette and hadn't really given him a good shot, why not build around him instead? After all, Arsenal's problem hasn't really been scoring goals.

I think they'd be in a much healthier situation if they'd done that. They should have binned Ozil off before he entered his final year, Ramsey earlier prioritised better. They are now stuck with a really unbalanced squad of players around the age of 30 on high salaries, whose value will diminish very quickly, and a bunch of players that most teams wouldn't really want. Only Torreira would be seen as a good signing for the other top 6.

I think people's predictions of them being stuck in some sort of twilight zone between the top 5 and the rest could actually be their future for now. However, if Everton get their act together and any of the other clubs is seen as a project from any rich owners they could slip even further.

Agree with most of what you've written there

The only point that's debatable is whether or not they should have bought Aubemeyang

I agree with you that it was a 'panic buy', but I also think it was a purchase they got lucky with, as he's worked out for them

Goalscorers are such a rarity in the game that finding one is always going to be a massive benefit. Arsenal are proof of this, as they're still 6th without a good defence and mediocre squad-depth; so they're better with Aubemeyang than without

What they could have done, however, was keep PEA and sell Lacazette, using the funds to restructure

They would probably get between £45m-£60m for Lacazette and although that wouldn't get them multiple top-quality experienced players, it would get them 2 (or 3 at a push) highly rated young prospects (e.g. Maddison, Grealish, etc)

And that's the way they're going to have to rebuild their side; young lads who will come good and will have a massive re-sell value

Do you remember when Wenger used to play his young players in the Wirthington Cup and they were all stars of the future? What happened to that famous youth set up?

Didn't they get thrashed in a semi final 5-1 by their rivals (that actually fielded a younger team)?

How does Ozil still have so many fifa kiddie fanboys?
I don't know, as talented as he is, he is such a weak link and lacks work ethic.

I saw him for Germany against Ghana in the WC and he literally did nothing, he hides and only gets animated once he is on the ball. Most goons will tell you he is a WC winner and integral to their success but he barely did anything of note and a lot of German fans I spoke to wanted him out of the team because of his poor work ethic.

I think he's a player of a different era; football has moved on over the last 3 to 4 years

IIRC a lot of them went on to play in the PL and other first-tier leagues, just not for Arsenal and not for top-level clubs in those leagues.

I also think Wenger was dining out on his reputation at the time, of being this really sophisticated, progressive coach, taking football to the 'next-level', when in actual fact he had had his day and was starting to stagnate.

Of course everyone, most importantly Arsenal football club and their fans, didn't realise this until it was too late!!

I think you're right. 20-30 years ago he would have been able to drift in and out of games and still be decisive, nowadays with the press, players can't get away with not putting a shift in. Talent alone is no longer enough.
