Seems our plan was De Jong, De Ligt & Martial. Would have been awesome... if only.
No our “plan” was to see if anyone would pay over the odds for our older players with short contracts and then see if anyone had financial difficulties such that they would accept low ball bids for their best young players who were on long contracts. Genius. I really still don’t understand why it failed to come off.

Depressing.
Incredibly short-sighted too, as it is always the so-called bargains that bloat the squad, cost games when they do play and prove impossible to get rid of.
You'd think that Levy would have learned his lesson after N'Koudou, Jansen, et al, but admitting stupid mistakes is seemingly not part of his DNA...

Haha well, yes of course. There was that part as well.

Will never come to us but hopefully he doesn’t go to a PL club. And very stupid from Barca to sell him imo

The one area we don't really need reinforcements in, despite his potential. Take into account the amount of money he'd cost and his poor attitude, there's little chance we're interested, and nor should we be imo.

Mate if we even have half a chance, we should be all over it

There is no way this is true, he came on in the Clasico on Sunday and after a lovely bit of skill set up Vidal for their 5th. He is already a fan favourite and has been getting game time for them. He is very much in Valverde's plans.

Surely taking a risk on an injured Barkley is the kind of move we should be making if we're looking to 'beat' the market. He fit our time-honoured MO of low-contract players which got us some good players back in the days when we'd actually pull the trigger. £22m including agents fees... in this market.. probably what we were asking for N'Koudou, who I guess wasn't carrying an injury (other than not being very good).

We already have three injury prone CM's, why add a fourth to the mix? Will say, I wish we made a push for Ross that summer before but I know Everton were asking for 30 mill when he had a year left on his contract.

I know about him. Very difficult to do though, as the mega clubs also know about him
Just saw a link that Real Madrid was buying him for 20mil and loaning him back to River coming up in the January window..

Regarding Exequiel Palacios, highly rated CM at River Plate.

I know Zaha got the pen today, but fucking hell the step overs and losing possession early so often doesn't equal £70m. I would love to see teams sit back v Palace (I know they won't) just to see how effective he could be. I would also like to see him get up after being touched and stop making out he had been poll axed.

I watched the game- he lost it rarely as I recall, and if he did it was in his constant cause to make things happen- a brave player, especially psychologically...

I like the idea of us buying these young players, trying to get the very best out of their raw potential, however recently I think the thing we are missing is a bit of a midfield general, perhaps an older head who will bollock players not playing to the level they should be. Dembele and Wanyama are big strong players but when do you ever really see them get into their team mates to get them going?
In the past when we’ve had Freunds, Davids, maybe even Scotty Parker you could see that other players didn’t want to be the one to make the mistake.
I just feel like we are missing that voice, and that player that doesn’t mind kicking a few people up in the air every now and then. I’ve seen a few people suggest Dier can play this role, but I’m not sold on that.

maybe 18 months ago we needed 1/2 players to be competing for the title, we now need a big overhaul of 6-8 players and I'd welcome any debate as to how anybody can disagree that that isn't evidence of a poor transfer policy.

2 new LBs, CM, DM, forward, HG backup GK. 6 would be my ideal as well.
