aka the vlad watch thread.

Chiriches, 6.5: Buona partita del rumeno, scende in campo con la bottiglia di rum spaccata e falcia gli avversari. MACELLAIO

in engrish - Chiriches 6.5: Good game of Romanian, takes the field with the bottle of rum and split mowing opponents. BUTCHER.

are we sure it wasn't vodka?

Lots of complaints about Napoli's defense are fair, but Chiriches has quietly put Defrel into his pocket. Defrel gave Napoli fits last year

that sounds like my vlad - cool, calm and composed.

in other news juve lost at home to udinese.

*grumbles* Shit weekend football wise. Draw with Leicester and loss with Udinese. I didn't get to watch either game as I have been away and I'm glad I saved myself the bother.

My old man gave me a run through of Juve's game. Dominant but wasted so many chances, until Udinese pretty much scored with their first real chance in the 78th minute. Pogba was very switched off. He's not going anywhere this summer but he certainly isn't a £60m player yet. Definitely the best CM in the world for his age, but not quite world class on a consistent basis yet.

Big game today is Juve v Roma which has just started on BT Sport.

Just noticed Falque is playing for Roma now, forgot he was there.

Juve are seriously missing Marchisio in the midfield. Padoin, Sturaro and Pogba is very weak and lacks a real leader there. Padoin and Sturaro are squad players at best and I can't see why Pereyra isn't starting, I really do rate him. Dybala starting over Morata and Cuadrado is on the bench as well. Alex Sandro is on the bench too. Too early for him but I can't wait to see what he can do this season.

Edit: Just saw Szczesny in goal for Roma too. As if I needed another reason to dislike Roma...

Just watched the Juve v Roma game. Roma really are a tactical curiosity. Can't figure out why Naingolan and Salah are being played as twin trequartistas and Pjanic behind them as a CM?

Managers never cease to surprise me with the counter intuitive decisions they make.

No wonder Roma are struggling.

I stopped caring about Serie A after the match-fixing scandal, which I suspect was just the tip of the iceberg.

Cheat-mode league.

You've said this a few times before, Spurg. There's no point bringing it up every time someone makes a thread about it.

Sure, it's had its problems but no league is squeaky clean. Spain has had shitloads of scandals, particularly involving Real Madrid, yet nobody writes them off as a "cheat-mode league". Germany has had scandals, so has France, Portugal and Holland. I find it bizarre that England seems to keep a clean image. The most watched league in the world, and the richest, yet no corruption? No ref bribery? No betting scandals? I'd love to know the shit that has happened behind the scenes in the Premier League that we don't know about because I'm sure there bloody well is/has been. Every league has been taken advantage of at some point, it's inevitable with the way money is thrown around in football. I'll fully admit that Italy has been one of the worst, probably the worst of the major, more high profile European leagues, but I think it's just lazy to call it a "cheat-mode league".

I think it's become popular for people to dismiss Italian football and I think people just like to jump on the bandwagon. A lot of people I know don't knock it for the match-fixing scandal, it was a decade ago after all. I find people bash it because they have this false perception that it's a boring league. It became a victim of its own success after the 90s and its never quite recovered, the match-fixing shit just secured its fate. People tell me all the time how they think it's a boring league, with boring 1 nil or nil-nil results, when they couldn't be farther from the truth. I put on here recently how Serie A had seen more goals than any of the big leagues in Europe over the recent years, and had, outside of our league, the tightest title races, since Spain is a 2 horse race and Germany is a 1 horse race. I've been enjoying it more in the last few years and the standard is far better than people give it credit for. It's better than Spain, IMO, and that gets wanked over all the time by the likes of Sky. There may be match-fixing events still happening, who knows, but I think you can say that for any league.

Meh.

It's a corrupt league with one good player (Pogba) propping it up.

It used to just be tedious. Now it's tedious and tarnished. Shame, as I used to love Italian football many moons ago.

Couldn't disagree more, especially about the Pogba bit since he's not even been the best player in the league for the last couple of seasons. You're entitled to your opinion, of course...

I don't really care about the Pogba bit. Just an overrated player in a fixed joke of a league.

If sport has taught me one thing over the years its that no form of it is immune to corruption. I'll refrain from descending into what could be labelled as conspiracy theorism, but in some respects I view the Italian league as being ahead of the curve in that its corruption has been aired out in the public for all to see. Simply put, there is no way I believe that the PL has been completely devoid of similar antics and tbh we have reached the point whereby to simply dismiss this notion is not that of a logical person consigning naysayers to a tin hat label, but rather, is brand of naivety.

Serie A
Tour de France
Athletics
Snooker
Tennis
Test Cricket

yada yada

A sport is only devoid of cheating and scandal until said cheating and scandal comes to the surface. That may seem like a very cynical viewpoint, but the reality is that the annals of time have proved this to perhaps be the viewpoint of a world weary realist, as opposed to a tin hat lunatic ala DAVSPURS ( cudos if you know what I'm talking about ).

To me anyway, there are plenty of other reasons, that are far more pertinent, to not really be a fan of Italian football.

Spurs have been my team since 1990, but I also have been a psuedo fan of Inter since the German trio of Mattheus, Brehme and Klinsmann and Zenga Bergomi et al in the early 90s so have kept a relatively close eye on this league. The quality clearly dipped, crowds fell, stadiums are antiquated and prone to creating poor atmospheres and yes, sometimes the ponderous tempo and nature of the play does not lend itself to dramatic viewing. Consequently, I find myself not watching much of Serie A at all these days, but have not consigned it to the dustbin because its morals are in the gutter compared to other leagues.

To this day, I will never look at Fulop v Arsenal and see this as 'just one of those things'. And that is not the only instance, and not just against Spurs. It just so happens we are the ones that have threatened the elite with the most regularity.

I'll admit, I have ended up drunken rambling somewhat here but I find myself wanting to back up Syn13, but with the knowledge that Spurger King is clearly an excellent and intelligent poster, who may on the odd occasion, simplify with brevity for comedic effect.

As someone who doesn't post that often these days, it is also just pure misfortune that I arrived in this thread and felt compelled to scribe. Apologies to you all ;)

Fair points. I agree that Italian football has a lot to be negative about. Hate seeing half empty crowds and 'Ultras' banners. Its been a victim of its own success from the 90s. I think Italian politics and organised crime has had a large hand in it. The politicians in Italy are some vorrupt people on the planet.

After Calciopoli scandal, Serie A is probably at its cleanest and is probably the purest league out there tbh.

That is a stunning run of form

Yeah, Juve were 17 points from the top a few months back. They were having a Chelsea season. They stuck with it though and have finally reached top spot after beating Napoli last night. It's still close and I personally think Napoli look the better side this season, wouldn't be surprised if they win it.

Edit: We've got Bayern Munich next and we're missing Chiellini and possibly Bonucci as he had to come off injured last night. That run of form is going to end methinks.
