Well done Benfica, very good side but we gave them a scare in the end. Blatant pen on Kane but there was a hint of offside on Chazza's second goal wasn't there? Overall I think Benfica deserved it but largely in part to us gifting them a few goals at home.

Chadli-Lamela and Eriksen in the 4-2-3-1 is the way to go and behind Ade would create loads of problems for the opposing defenders.

moral of the story. it isn't the quality of our players, nor the tactics.

its heart.

we showed none during most of our season. had we played every game, every moment like the last 15, we would be fighting for the title

Proud of the effort tonight, but the tie was lost last week.

You can't concede 3 goals at home and expect to progress in Europe.

Still, a hell of a lot of positives to take from tonight's game.

Shame we couldn't turn it around cos i would've loved to have seen the bastard son of Frank Skinner and Ray Romano's (Jorge Jesus') face if we won.

At least there were a couple of positives from the game.

Chadli, and one game closer to Sherwood's last (y)

Eight regular players missing and we were the better team against Benfica who are presently first in the Portuguese League. We did have a blatant penalty call. Sherwood should be proud of the young lads tonight.

Starting to have doubts over Bentaleb. I think Carroll will be a better option next season.
I've been very wary of him so far but actually thought he did alright considering. The mis-hist pass being an exception of course.

I'm all for promoting from within but the sheer amount of game time he gets over established internationals is baffling.

And Tim has identified that and made it clear that is what is required.

And it's taken us 7 months to work that out lol

All in all, the whole team played well (other than the lapse in concentration for the first goal). Soldado was probably our poorest player tonight. Naughton and Rose defended well, as did Sandro and Fryers (I swear Fryers was smaller than he actually is?!). Siggy was better centrally. I thought Chadli should have gone over to the left as soon as Eriksen came on for Townsend.
