Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a January bid for Benfica atttacking midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, according to reports.

Gaitan, 25, was linked with a summer switch to Manchester United, who are believed to have been quoted a price of £25 million by Benfica, before eventually ending their interest.

Atheltic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera and Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas later emerged as the club's key midfield targets.

According to online publication Tuttomercatoweb, Spurs have now emerged as the most likely destination for Gaitan.

An Argentina international, Gaitan has played six times for his country and has contributed 13 league goals to Benfica since joining the Portuguese club in 2010 from Boca Juniors.

Tottenham were the Premier League's biggest spenders in the summer transfer window.

Spurs reinvested the £85m earned from selling forward Gareth Bale to Real Madid on seven new players at a cost of £107m.

United manager David Moyes is expected to continue his search for a new midfielder in the January transfer window, after seeing bids for Herrera and Fabregas turned down this summer.

Being link recently with Lavezzi and now Gaitan, think we are trying to get someone to help Lamela settle into life in london... anyway pretty decent player, thou we do have alot of talent in midfield at the moment.

But that would probably mean offloading Siggy or Lennon or even both of them. But I'm okay with that.

I think that come January, Lamela will have a strong grasp of English. It is amazing how fast you can learn a language when you are just thrown into a culture. He doesn't have many Spanish speakers here, so he will pick it up faster, as he is forced too.

I've heard really good things about him. Anyone tell me what his natural position is? Realistically we'd be looking at someone for the left hand side, so hopefully that's his area.

He can play across the front three often starting on the left. He is left footed which is a downside but has fantastic skill. This video is from 2012 as I haven't found a good one from 2013 yet but you get the gist of how good he is.

I'm not fussed about him being another lefty. It's clear that Lamela and Townsend prefer to play on the right so having a natural leftie who likes that left hand side may not be a bad idea.

Maybe AVB wants Gaitan and Coentrao to boost the left they know each others game from Benfica makes sense

like i said previously. its more then english. we all need a buddy, be i someone to sit with during meals, or the person next to u on the coach, its important to a new player to have someone just to "hang" with.

i really want lamela to do well thou, i think he is class...

We should have a very busy Jan transfer window if 10% of the rumours are true.
