Sorry - but I disagree. It's not only Bale. The agent is just as culpable - he stands to earn an absolute killing out of the deal. Do you really think he's just going to sit there and not do anything while Bale hatches this evil plot.... bollocks. The agent will have been in his ear and will have been a part (not all) of this, no question IMO. It takes two to tango and <insert other cliches here>.
I just don't believe it's the evil machinations of an agent. The agent works for the player, to serve his wants and desires. Bale's probably asked his opinion, but 90% of people who aren't Spurs fans would tell him to go to Real too.

For me Lamela, Di Maria or Draxler (money talks) are about as good as we are going to get in terms of replacements.

For those saying Di Maria is no good, I just can't understand it. Last season he walked into a Real Madrid and Argentina side (and performed) with possibly the biggest array of attacking talent there is in world football to choose from.

No, but it's definitely a combination of the two (i.e. not all Bale). The agent will make millions out of this deal. IMO, Bale would have been happy to stay for one more year. He has had his head turned by RM and the agent.

Obviously the player himself bears some responsibility, but agents are important figures in the individual's life whom they've often known since they were just a boy. Most players are young men without a great deal of intelligence, they look up to their representative as an older man - a mentor with experience in the business, who they trust for advice. Real Madrid have ruined more careers than they've made. Bale's still relatively young, at a good club with a quality manager who rates him - I know any player is 'just one tackle away' (from a massive insurance pay-out ;)), but someone's been in his ear to deny us the extra year on an improved contract IMO. Someone he trusts has given him the fear and demanded immediate action, when we all know Perez would've been back next year anyway.
Agents, the cancer in football - everyone in the game except the players with only good experiences of the industry (the minority) and the men themselves say it, and to be honest Barnett in particular has got form.

You're both coming at it from a Spurs point of view, take those glasses off, nobody will be chastising Barnett for his guidance of Bale's career. He'll be one the top 10 paid players in the world, he'll be playing with the player he most admires in the world, and Madrid will build his brand up, to the benefit of him and them.

By all rights Stellar Group had been happy for him to stay at Spurs, he signed the contract last year, and it seemed that they were guiding him to stay another year. Something changed in Hong Kong, we'll never know what it was, but I can't help feeling it was Madrid giving him and ultimatum, now or never. Maybe Barnett told him he can't risk turning them down, maybe him told him they'll come back next year too, which they surely would of.

Point is, Bale wasn't prepared to risk it, and I believe that decision was made by him with full knowledge of the ramifications. I don't hate him or his people for it. I just wish he'd given us one more year, and brought some real glory to the Lane first.

Agree, Di Maria played 50 games for Real Madrid last season. There is no way he gets continually picked in one of the best teams in the work unless he performs on the pitch.

114 pages for the daily thread? How many for the next one when Soldado is announced?

I think the thing about Di Maria is that his running and dribbling style looks awkward, he's gangly and it's not aesthetically pleasing. He's a good player, but I don't think he's value for the wages he would want.

Just so we're clear, you wouldn't want a player who made 50 appearances for Real Madrid as well as being a regular in the Argentinian squad because... he's not aesthetically pleasing? You know what, we wouldn't want Messi, either, he's short and I only want boys who are taller than me.

Jesus.

He might want that...

To me it all seemed rosy for one more year, but he has had his head (that's a fuckload of 'H's) turned. The point I am trying to make is that the agent must be involved (as well as RM). Spurs-tinted glasses on or not, I think agents are greedy ****s (mainly because I don't get millions for completing a deal that I have worked on for months)... So, let's just agree to disagree as I'm a bit over it.

In any business there are ways of getting the client to do what you like. I suggest things that they initially don't want and make it seem like a good idea and they pay me for doing what I want over what they originally wanted.

Bale wanted to play abroad at some point, he has said so several times. Maybe Barnett and his crew saw the cash this time around and sped up the process.

I am disillusioned by the state of the game at the moment. It's not the sport I fell in love with, hasn't been for some time. It's just another business.

I'm not saying he's not a good player, just explaining why certain people are turned off him.

Just reading back through the last 20 pages and thought that JJ said he would like Di Maria but doubts that would happen? In which case perhaps the chadli deal got done when negotiations started and the 3rd player is for another position? After all weren't we wondering why he appeared to have been put on the back burner, fee and terms agreed, Twente disclosing all this then he appeared to be in limbo for a time?

AVB appears to be buying players to fit into the 4-3-3 he loves and they all pocess 1 key attribute, an engine. I agree not the only attribute but this is what makes me think Bernard, Di Maria or flair based players are not on our radar, they don't offer the flexibility on the pitch to fit into his system as their defensive qualities are lacking. I think the third player will be CB, but fuck knows who.

In regards to Bale in general, if it is a player plus cash situation, it has more chance of not happening, especially if it drags on too close to the window. My main concern is that we ensure whatever happens, our beloved team comes out balanced and stronger in at least depth, players come and go, they are servants for the club we support.

I don't care if we sell Bale anymore as long as end up with around that £100m mark, if we also Siggy in addition to Caulker that's around £120m sloshing about... That's fucking mental!
