That one still gives me PTSD flashbacks. I maintain we would've won that match if Poch hadn't tried to go maverick and just picked played Son in his normal position.

We were playing 3-4-3 so Son wouldn't have normally played, We had Davies available but was too slow to deal with Chelsea's counters, if Rose was fit we would have won that, ah well.

My lineup's a bit out there. Be patient whilst I explain.

Lloris
Trippier Toby Jan Davies
Aurier Winks Sissoko Rose
Dele
Kane

Most of their assists seem to come from the fullbacks. So we have 2 of each either side, Aurier man marking Robertson, Rose doing the same with TAA. If it all goes south later on or we're level after about 75 mins, bring on Sonny and Lucas to run them ragged.

Oops. Eriksen for Winksy. Completely forgot he existed.

I'd go

Lloris
Trippier/Aurier Toby Jan Rose
Sissoko Kane
Lucas Eriksen Son
Kane

The pace of Lucas and Son would help to pin back their fullbacks and Eriksen could drop deep when required but would also have more freedom to get in goalscoring positions. Would mean dropping Dele but he's been v.hit or miss this season and would a great option off the bench along with Lamela.
An excellent riposte to those who weirdly believe Kane shouldn't start.

Haha shit. I was lazy and pasted someone else's formation then made a couple changes up front, assuming it was Winks in midfield. Never imagined Kane would've been anyone's CM.

Lloris
Trippier Alderweireld Vertonghen Rose
Sissoko Winks
Lucas Eriksen Son
Kane

Dele on the bench for me, his form hasn't been great and Lucas deserves it for getting us here.

The more I think about this, the more I think Rose needs to be one of the first names on the sheet. He's become the epitomy of the big-game player, he really seems to enjoy these huge occasions. Most of the squad seem to have their highs and lows but wee Dan appears to have a Champions League activated second heart and set of lungs that will be vital against the 'pool wingers.

I know a lot of you shit on him while he keeps getting picked (Sorry, Mopo, you don't know what you're doing, apparently?) but reckon Trippier to start as well but plonk Son out a bit wider to make pool think twice about making breaks down there and make sure Jan is switched on. I'd rather have a fit Trippier stay further back, positioning himself earlier when we're not in possession and putting the crosses in from deeper, than Aurier come back without that match sharpness, leave a leg dangling and get himself sent off. He has form for being a bit agricultural in the tackle sometimes and, while I like the guy and glad to see him back on our bench, they also have a habit of being a bit quick to trip over rather easy.

Aside from the 2 assists, 2 more chances created and his own chance v ajax?

Against winks, who I really like btw, but who has not played for 2 months?

Dele has to play.

Anyone putting Wanyama in the starting lineup has to be absolutely mad. The guy is finished at this level as the game just passes him by. Whenever he's played recently he's had rings run around him - in particular the first half in the first leg at home to Ajax where the sight was actually very sad to see.

Yep, I would still play him if he is fit. I don't like to see either Dele or Eriksen dropped back to Sissoko. Dier and Wanyama look off the pace.

Lucas and Son on either side would push their fullbacks back which we know they love going forwards.

It would be suicidal. I refuse to watch the game if Poch plays him. He's beyond a liability at this point, as you said he's just a passenger and has rings run around him. Was legitimately so bad vs Ajax that it was like playing 10v12 (in the sense that it gave them a "prey" to chase after and dispossess with their press, plus he was so bad at covering space that it pulled the rest of our defense out of position covering for his lapses).

It's sad how he just dropped off entirely and is so bad now, wish it wasn't the case. But he cannot start this game. It would be like forfeiting.

Cannot believe how many people would put Winks straight back in after a couple of months out. I think that is absolute madness. Yes, it might make the formation look prettier and more dynamic on paper, but that's not how it works. I strongly suspect Poch will feel the same.

The idea of dropping Dele is equally crazy, and is equally unlikely to happen. And rightly so. It's no time to go all Kevin Keegan and start with wacky formations and playing players out of position and all that shite just because it looks clever on paper. Seen that nonsense a million times and it always backfires. I say this notwithstanding Poch having seriously worked on something new & fancy over the last couple of weeks, which is unlikly, but possible. What we can't have is last-minute brain waves about Sanchez at FB, or Kane at No. 10, or dropping Dele, or any of that mallarky. KISS.

The difficult decision is Son v Lucas for me.

Poch has talked about this game in terms of emotion meaning more than tactics and I somewhat agree with him. Both son and Lucas seem pretty emotional guys so the impact of leaving one of them on the bench could be devastating for their form in the game.

However, I’ve a feeling he might go Lucas. Lucas has scored away at Man Utd, Barcelona, Liverpool, Man City and Ajax this season. That’s goals away from home in some big games. He’s turned up and scored some big goals. He could well do that again.

Definitely not a 41212 formation which really doesn’t work against Liverpool’s system of playing advanced fullbacks.

For me, it’s got to be a 4231/433

Lloris
Aurier Toby Verts Rose
Sissoko Eriksen
Moura Dele Son
Kane

In this system, one of Son or Moura alternate providing wide cover to choke their attacks- by having Dele, Kane and one of Moura or Son set up for a counter, we could really disrupt them, especially with the wide spaces that open up with their offensive fullbacks
