On another note, I would like to see a complete embargo on players approaching referees. None. Why FIFA haven’t done this already is baffling. A ref never changes his decision - or shouldn’t- because players surround him, so why allow it?

Agree with this so much. We need to change the power dynamic and remind footballers that they are not in charge of matches, or rather, stop that from being the case. Seeing refs actually applying rules with VAR and holding in the box was so alien when it should be the norm. When players like Mina etc are screaming in the refs face, immediate yellow. Do it once more, just once, red. That’s it. Would love to see Neymar’s face the next time he starts calling the ref a puto or whatever. We need to see way way more yellows and reds for a very brief period before we see them take a sudden nosedive.

Ref need to start booking players who do it. In the Colombia gave, if the ref just said next person to speak or gets booked when they surrounded him and started to book them, I feel he would have had more control for the rest of the game also.

He needs to call the captains over and tell that to them so he can tell them to calm down, that's the only way it's going to work otherwise I can't see them telling 4 or 5 angry players from both sides to calm it.

Only the captains should be allowed to approach the referee and anyone else it should be a straight bookable offence. On this occasion (and plenty others) not only was it totally disrespectful to the referee but it significantly delayed the taking of the penalty which as we know can affect penalty takers. In fact I suspect part of the reason players do it is to put off the penalty taker by delaying the kick.

Why even allow captains? Why does any player need to approach a ref after a decision or during a VAR review?

It’s unedifying, it demeans the game as a spectacle, undermines the officials authority.

Needs to be stopped completely.

Absolutely. Talk to the ref to challenge a decision, get booked.

I agree with this.

Unfortunately I think a lot of refs may be a bit scared to dismiss a player under these circumstances. Imagine having the fear of an entire country hating you and worse sending you death threats because you were only applying the laws of the game. In lots of South American countries players always cross the line in terms of hounding the ref and are barely punished for it. I've watched countless Brazilian Championship games where the behaviour of the players was an absolute disgrace (just short of physically attacking a ref) yet the ref would be very reluctant to do anything about it, next thing the police are on the pitch creating a shield around the officials as the players seem to have no consciousness of where that line is.

FIFA needs to have a dramatic change and tell these country's FA's that they need to seriously clamp down on this domestically because it will be enforced internationally and that they'd be only harming themselves in competitions.

To be fair, he did book players for doing it, but players know a ref is highly unlikely to go full ape on them because he’ll get accused of ruining the game as a spectacle etc. I’m sure they are instructed to try and avoid it.

It puts them in a very difficult position.

Bit harsh to book anyone who talks to the ref! :cautious:

There should be some discussion between player and ref but it should be a discussion, not 5 or 6 players balling at the ref.

If they're arguing over a decision, they should get booked.

Wouldn't be the ref ruining the game, that would fall onto the players shoulders for that.

Falcao was captain, he was as bad as the others.

Small point if England get to final, the final is July 15th, PL season starts Aug 11th, hardly any time for Harry & co to rest , Sonny away in Asia how will WC effect our start to the season.

Yes but I don't support England , I support Spurs and the the Azzurri .

Most of the top PL teams have players still involved in world cup, Man City have eleven so all the top teams will have tired players at the start of the season apart from the Woolwich.

No. Show which posters have been hypocritical before making the claims of double standards/xenophobia.

No. Go and read through the Brazil game, see how many people complained about exaggeration, then read through the England game and you will see no one (many of the same people) complaining about it or mentioning it or just saying the Columbian guy was out of order. Then when I brought it up some even justified what Henderson did.

VAR has cut out diving, if you give players yellow cards for abusing referees in their face then that will soon stop too. It's an easy solution and I can't understand why referees haven't been given the licence to be stricter on it.
