Surprised there's no thread for this yet.
Taking place in Canada, which means most of the games start a little too late for me to make an effort to watch.

This year sees the tournament expand to 24 teams, though with last night's result, it show it was probably best to have stayed as a smaller tournament without the really bad teams.
Pre-tournament co-favourites Germany strolled past Ivory Coast last night with a 10-0 drubbing handed out. Ivory Coast are the lowest ranked team in the competition, so no great surprise.
England start their tournament tomorrow with a 6pm BST kick-off against France.
Joint favourites USA face Australia at 12.30 tonight.

Results so far:

Canada 1-0 South Korea
New Zealand 0-1 Netherlands
Norway 4-0 Thailand
Germany 10-0 Ivory Coast (yes, that's a TEN)

Germans squeezed through then

England ALWAYS seem to be playing France whenever there is a woman's tournament.

The Ivory Coast defence looked liked it had never played football before, never mind together.

At least they let Gervinho play for them (there was a big manly looking woman playing, and was about as good as the ex-gooner)

Enjoying it so far... although the Germany/IC game was a shambles. The Dutch' first goal was a cracker.

While the live coverage is good, the highlights show feels more than a little patronising... lots of pink, magazine style sections titled "Gossip" with a big pair of women's lips, etc. And instead of proper highlights, you basically get the goals, with a pop soundtrack in the background. Why can't it be a proper MOTD style highlights show?

The problem with women's soccer is that, outside of the top 8-12 teams, the standard of play decreases exponentially. The level is incredibly poor at that point, and while it's a noble cause to expand the tournament to bring more countries into it, for the time being it'll only serve to embarrass a lot of countries. Hopefully, in the future, the women's game benefits from this increased worldwide exposure.

Agree with you how patronising the highlight section looks. I was hoping for something a little more informative.

Not had a chance to watch any games yet because of the times and needing to be in work early, but I'm looking forward to watching England tomorrow. I'm disappointed that Italy don't have a strong enough team to make it. Mind you, with the state of Italy's "equality" laws they probably would've had to ask their husbands' permission first, followed by a Miss Italia style pageant to choose who looks good enough to make the cut.

Not wanting to be regressive, but there were a couple of stunners on the Canada team!

The women's game is where the men's was in the 70s in many ways, in the early expansion days where countries like Zaire and Haiti featured in World Cups purely for reasons of exposure and promptly got spanked.

Agree, and as for a couple of those Norwegian and Swedish girls ... Also not wanting to be regressive, but you can't not appreciate!

Oh, definitely. I completely agree with what you're saying in that first paragraph.

For the time being, these "smaller" countries will only be embarrassed, and while I do think it'll help the game in the future, there are questions over the relative equality of women in many places around the world that would absolutely serve as a barrier to the increased quality of women's soccer in those places. Additionally, the money simply isn't (yet?) in the women's game to make it a worthwhile pursuit for players from many of those same places. Compare that to the massive increase in the numbers of African players in the top leagues in the last 20 years - I just don't see the same thing happening in the women's game.

As for the second paragraph, no one should apologize for appreciating the beauty of an attractive woman!

There's nothing wrong with commenting on whether you find the female players attractive. I wouldn't expect someone who is attracted to men to apologise if they found the male players attractive during the World Cup, or any other competition. As long as you don't belittle their achievements by objectifying them, or reduce it into a beauty contest.

not even if it's still a draw after extra time ?

I'm thinking USA vs Australia should feature a few lookers... could be wrong though

I'd take that bird Nigeria have on the right wing in our team over Lamela or Townsend.

Already at Liverpool so we're a bit late lol, she just scored a very nice goal actually, bullied the Sweden defence. Very good game, Sweden were 2-0 up and cruising then 2 goals in 3 mins from Nigeria now Sweden have just taken the lead again.

I like women's football personally, I think it would be better if the goals were a bit smaller as the one thing that lets many teams down are their goalkeepers. The goals just seem to be way too big for the female keepers.

Players i'm looking forward to watching are Marta, Necib, Oshoala (playing now), and Ji So-Yun.

Also I find some of the girls playing very hot, i'll be looking out for my favourite.

Edit - So far I have to say I like Anouk Hoogendijk from Holland, one major problem is that she plays for Arsenal.

I wish people would stop going on about how women's professional football isn't up to the standard of men's professional football. We all know it's true, so there really is no reason to make a point of it. If you don't like it or don't see the merit of it, then don't watch it or comment about it in the thread. It's utterly pointless to be so disrespectful.
