Good to read a reasonable interview from TS. Havent seen the match so not sure if the domination of the first half is accurate, but 3pts is 3pts.

There could have been many more goals - from both sides. We dominated the first ten or so, then they came back into it. If Stoke could have delivered proper crosses they could have been out of sight. They seemed to have so much space. And we needed to shoot quicker - one touch instead of three. I felt three or four chances went begging in the first half alone.

Can't wait to see all our fans being sent home happy on the last day of the season, after failing to make the top 4 (probably top 5), failing to integrate the majority of our new signings, failing to finish ahead of the gooners yet again, and failing to make any sort of progress after the sacking of AVB.

Not really having a go at Tim as he's just trying to say something positive - but the only reason we'll have to be happy after the Villa game is that our appalling season will finally be over.

Stoke had lost at home up until todays game once since December end.

I think they have beaten Arse and Man Citeh? and only lost to Liverpool.

Think we have done well against them with two clean sheets and six points. Not pretty at times to watch but three more points.

Levy mismanaged the season, no one else. No point shooting his Muppet.

Considering we're gonna be close to 70pts with our cluster fuck management means our players aren't bad.
I'll not slag any of them off considering.

Get a good manager and there's cause for optimism, don't and I'll need a break from spurs til the fire returns.

I see what you're getting at. But just shows how far we've come in the last 8 years. For as long as I can remember, we were desperate to get into the EUFA Cup and not finish 10th again. Now we will probably match our record points tally in the PL, are dissapointed to finish maybe 6th, possibly 5th. Don't want to be in europe as it's a distraction! We've gone from being 20 odd points off of the top 4, to being within a point (generally) most seasons off Arse. That is progress.

Finishing 6th with 72 points would be a massive kick in the teeth.

Yes it would, but it shows the development in the PL very precisely. The top teams are winning more and more games and you need more and more points to push into the top four. We have come on leaps and bounds over the last 7-8 years, but sadly Man City popped up out of nowhere with a sugar daddy, and now Liverpool are suddenly back from the dead. 70 points used to guarantee fourth spot for a long while, but now we will have to progress even further to get another taste of that sweet CL football.

This season was always going to be somewhat of a transitional season with all the new players, and resultwise we have done really well, except against the top teams. We are still very close to where we want to be, though. In fact the league games against the Gooners could have put us on 70 points for 36 games had we collected what would not have been a totally undeserved 4 points in those two games. We would then be (dare I say sh*tting ourselves?) going into the last two games in fourth place. I don't think we have looked anywhere good enough for fourth place this season, but that is how close we are.

Calling the season horrible is therefore pushing it a bit I think. It has been disappointing in a number ways, and we have a long way to go before we look like a top side again, but (the 0-3 home defeat to the Spammers aside) the only truly horrible things this season have been our woeful and embarrassingly poor performances against the top three - and the fact that we have gone from being a (quite respected) top side to being a laughing stock at times. That hurts! And the Keystone Kops defending hasn't helped.

Seing the Scousers (most likely) winning the title hurts too as they have come from behind us to nick it out of nowhere. It should, however, give us hope that with the right manager at the helm anything is possible. So, I'm not sure I will manage to finish the season smiling like TS says, but beating Wham on the way to finishing 5th or 6th on 72 points would make me more cheerful, and hopeful that with De Boer or another top manager brought in soon the future could still look bright for the lilywhite.

(Sorry for the long reply.)

I hate to state the bleeding obvious, but point totals don't really count for much if we finish outside the top four. It's all relative. Maybe next season 72 points will finish 2nd, but who knows!

Bring on the World Cup I say!

Not competitive against the big boys, two wins would have seen us in the top four but it's almost like we've had an inferiority complex against them...

Finishing 6th with 72 points would be a massive kick in the teeth.

It would also be unheard-of. Finishing 5th with 72 points was a first. But it's possible.

The maximum number of points to finish 6th since 1995/96 (the first year of the 20-team Premiership) is 64. The average and the median are 60. The minimum is 55.

What has happened the past 2 seasons is that there is no longer a nailed-on 'top 4'. Instead, there are 6-8 clubs with strong winning records, i.e., winning more than 50% of their matches, and then large points-gaps in the table between roughly 5th and 9th. Then the teams between 10th and the relegation zone are all packed together.

Because of the balanced schedule, large points gaps above mid-table mean that it takes more points to finish in the top 4. The nature of the league has changed: it is more competitive, in the sense that there are about 8 clubs seriously competing for European places, instead of 4 clubs miles ahead of everyone else.

Every season has it's "if only's". Two more wins anywhere would have done it. All losses are bad but to Newcastle & West Ham at home and Norwich away were particularly displeasing. Giving Utd a point through 2 mistakes at home, draws with WBA, Hull....... but every supporter can say the same. It is what it is.

Its been the manner of our losses this season that hurt most. Often shipping 3, 4 and 5 goals so many times has been painful to watch.

But, have we been a whole lot worse this season compared to last? For all the beatings we have taken we've only let 3 more goals in than last year with 2 games to go. If someone had asked me before I looked it up I would have guessed at least 10 more by now. And no one could argue that Gareth Bale didn't paper over many cracks for us last season. That's the benefit of having a truly world class once in a generation footballer playing for your club.

2014 - W20 D6 L10 F52 A49 66pts
2013 - W21 D9 L8 F66 A46 72pts

I, like everyone else, believe we have been worse this season. No doubt about it. However, I don't think as horrendous as alot of people think. Horrendous at times but not week in week out. As another poster said, maybe it is a mark of how far we have come as a club that a lot of spurs supporters think that.

What makes me laugh is that if we win it is down to the players ability, but if we lose it is Tim's fault.....that seems to be what is inferred by one of the earlier posts....

In his first season, Brendan Rodgers won 16, drew 13 and lost 9.

Many Liverpool fans were calling for him to be sacked; the team wasn't playing especially well or winning especially often.

There were some horrible results - 3-0 away to West Brom, 3-1 away to Stoke, 3-1 away to Southampton, and 1-3 at home to Aston Villa.

They failed to beat any of the big teams
, although they did achieve a few creditable draws against those teams.

We all know what happened this season.

Sherwood deserves a chance to continue the positive start he has had, a start which is, statistically, much better than the start Rodgers had in his first full season.

To the people who don't like statistics - football inherently involves stats. If you don't like that, go and watch another sport.

our appalling season will finally be over.

I do agree this season has been poor, but I would 'love it, just love it' if Arsenal had a meltdown and spurs win their last two games to sneak into fourth! Stranger things have happened.
