If the ITK is anywhere near on the money, we agreed on certain valuations but the players wont play for us.

I guess in the case of Aguero, he wants to go to RM.

Is it the fact that we wont pay top 4 wages, or they just see us as a 1 year wonder who wont play CL next year ?

We seem to be a laughing stock on the world wide web atm yet we had cash to splash.

70k a week in England is 35k after taxes. I'm guessing many of the La Liga players were making at least 50 to 70k a week after taxes.

Redknapp dropped enough hints to let us know that its our wage structure

Mostly wages, some facilities, and I think a little bit on manager, if we had a higher profile one it might attract more players in particular foreigners.

I reckon taxes/wages has something to do with it. Bringing in players from abroad is undoubtedly going to be harder than bringing in someone already based in the UK, and when they have to start paying 50% tax on their wages it's going to put some off for sure. We're not in a position (rightly or wrongly) to pay out massive wages so it's a stumbling block.

Wages plain and simple, no other reason IMO. We need that bigger stadium asap.

The tax excuse is rubbish, it's the same or near enough the same in other EU countries.

The problem is, revenue. Daniel Levy quite rightly will not break our wage structure because the other top sides double the gate receipts we get, week in, week out.

Daniel's leadership has got us this far, guided us to the CL and made us one of the best run Clubs in the league, and not by being tight, we've spent a lot of money over the years.

I completely back him in this window. £35m+ for Carroll and similar fee's touted for Rossi is absolutely crazy money. Harry said Forlan wanted 140k a week a well, which is ridiculous!

What happens if we'd got Forlan in on that wage, Levy would have VDV, Bale, Gallas, Lennon, Modric, Defoe etc knocking on his door asking for a pay rise.

Let's be sensible here lads, whilst we're at the Lane there is a limit to our resource. Levy runs the Club superbly and if things do/don't happen, it will always be in our best interests, ALWAYS!

Maybe its the lack of a transfer policy, lets bid for everyone, smells of smoke and mirrors again, wages slashed and i bet we make a profit next year!
Maybe its because the chairman strikes a hard deal,we got lucky with VDV,Redknapp certainly didnt have him on his radar!
Then bid for C (im a donkey)Adams and P Neville, maybe we need a director of football.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I have no insight to any of this living on the other side of the world.

Still curios though, other teams can afford the wages yet we cant.

Are all the top 4 teams stadiums bigger than the lane ?

we matched Liverpool bid, maybe they should have got him earlier in the window.
Daniel a great leader,is it 8 managers on 3 DOF now, he had to get one right, its the law of averages. We also re-couped lots of money as well!

Wages is a problem, but I think people also forget that we are not yet that finished article in terms of being a big club.

A lot has been made of the fact that Pool managed loads of signing while we manage Stevie Peanut. Confusion arises. "But we have CL, they don't?".

Fact is that clubs like Liverpool, although on the wane earlier this year, have a consistent history of CL football and honours and they know how to get back into those competitions.

We, on the other hand, are finding our way. Much has been said about Levy's guidance of the club, but there is something to remember. This is teh first time he has gotten to this level. With inexperience it could all collapse just as quickly, be it wages, transfer fees, transfer strategy, managerial choices or whatsver else. In many players' eyes this, right or wrong, will present a much greater risk element.

The bit in bold sums up why.

The bigger stadium never bothered Arsenal when they were signing Henry, Bergkamp, Overmas, etc when they were at highbury.....

Match day revenue wasn't such a problem for Arsenal because they had champion's league revenue every year, as well as a very large (domestic and international) fanbase, who bought lots of merchandise.

As it stands, we don't have the gate receipts, nor the international fanbase.

It's a virtuous cycle, if managed properly: higher gates - ability to pay higher wages - increased likelihood of presence/ success in league and Europe - growth of fanbase - ability to pay higher wages - etc.

You cannot compare the two situations, its totally different times. Money has become more influential in the game since then. When Arsenal were signing those players the top earners in the EPL were probably earning at most 50k a week and those players were bought for a fraction of the fee they would go for now. Fast forward 10-15 years to now, players are earning 200k and players who aren't even near the level of Bergkamp, Henry etc i.e Torres are going for 50m. Even now Arsenal don't spend ridiculous transfer fees and pay ridiculous wages. Teams with sugar daddies i.e Chelsea and Man City have taken wages and transfer fees to crazy levels.

Wages. Plain and simple. I don't for one second blame Levy for it. I'd rather we not do a Leeds, and it means if a player chooses us over someone else it really goes mean they want to play for the club rather than the mercenaries at Citeh.

Yes they are, we're considerably worse off:

Man Utd - 76312
Arsenal - 60432
Newcastle - 52387
Man City - 47726
Liverpool - 45362
Aston Villa - 42640
Chelsea - 42055
Everton - 40170
Tottenham - 36240

Not sure how accurate these numbers are but it clearly shows how our competitors get higher revenue than us. It also makes me appreciate how well our club is run when one considers the obvious disadvantage we have!
