It was dreadful viewing. But they pressed us very high and we laboured on the ball.

So, two things but very much interconnected.

When fatigue sets in, players generally want more time on the ball. The one time we saw some great pass and move patterns, and one touch stuff was when Kane forced that great save in the second half.

But that was it. Everything else was slow build up, trying to play out from the back and with their press it was just painful.

I'm sure Poch didn't envisage that happening but when you start a match quite slowly as a collective it can be hard to break out of it.

I think we did look a bit fatigued, certainly on the ball, even though we defended resolutely when needed.

Need to be vastly improved for Sunday. And if we are, we could rip United apart.

I sincerely hope you are right.

I agree, but my only concern is fatigue. We looked knackered last night.

I thought that, and was thinking this is just like the Wolves match all over again, I then though shit United are going to enjoy playing a knackered team. yet 3 days after playing Wolves, we never looked as tired (Ok Man U different level) and this time we have 5 days

Thought we were purposefully holding back. Saving ourselves. Had that look the whole game.

I didn't seem the match last night but a lot of folk outside of this place have said we were in a defensive control situation.... I can't argue with that but the entire concept worries me,

Er...
We couldn't keep the ball. Chelsea were good but toothless - Sarri playing Hazard upfront most of the game was bizarre.
I thought we looked tired. We managed a good tempo and attack for 45min, thereafter Chelsea dominated the second half and whilst we defended well, we really invited it on with a general inability to hold onto the ball.

We didn't look too fussed to be honest.

There was some horrible use of the ball on our part, particularly by Eriksen, but we looked very compact and comfortable with the thought that Chelsea didn't have a striker.

Think they had one half chance in the whole game, which was a Kante flick that hit the post. If Hazard hadn't played we'd have had the deck chairs out.

Strange game but thought we were comfortable. Reminded me of what Chelsea have done to us a few times in the past. Not our best, but solid.

I hear what you are saying but the truth is no team maintains form every game and sometimes teams excel themselves. I have seen us lose o many games because we can't hold a lead. Maybe this two leg semi gives us the chance to be better prepared for the Champions League matches. Maybe as a team we can find different ways to win big games unlike last year against Juve then ManU in the FA Cup ... not to mention Inter this year

That's not exactly something that comforts me though, the fact that they were able to do what they did regardless of who or who wasn't starting is somewhat disappointing, from our perspective. And it's not like we can rely on a team to have a lump up front to make things easier for us.

Also most of these players had a weeks rest so I'm not sure how much fatigue was an issue. I just think we really struggled on the night and couldn't deal with them pressing us so high up the pitch. They completely neutralised the space between our defence and midfield so our bridge to the attacking players was non-existent.

Like I said last night, we did defend well, but they can actually be quite toothless in front of goal too. It's no coincidence they failed to score at home to Southampton and failed to score at home to Leicester whilst losing too. I find the stand out element is that we still beat a Chelsea team not playing very well ourselves at all, which despite the performance, is a positive achievement. But regardless of that I'd hate to watch any other game play out like last nights again. I didn't find it good viewing, personally.

It wasn't good viewing, but how many times have Chelsea done us like that over the years? Let them be annoyed for once. Even better with Sarri and his magic laptop.

I do worry about our energy levels for Utd however.

Glastonspur @ Redcafe

Your advantage in this game is the fact that we have a tough League Cup SF 1st leg against Chelsea beforehand, which is what happens when competing on 4 different fronts.

This was received well on a Manchester United forum as you could have guessed. :hilarious:

Well done @Hakkz for actually being on topic!!

A few more bits from the Redcafe match thread for Sunday:

I think the only way we would get in trouble is an early Spurs lead, then our boys may start thinking to much ("Wait maybe we are not that good at all").
If we score first and keep calm, i think we should win this one easily. Also one week of rehab, fun, sun, smiling, teambuilding and tactic work while Spurs had to play midweek. We have to take that advantage.

-

Is it just me feeling this excitement? Feels like a cup final!

I literally keep checking time and date for this match to happen. Can't wait to see our lads tested by the "mighty" Tottenham.

-

Kanes’s ability to drop deep and find the runners going beyond him is very difficult to deal with, he really is a complete CF. Highly doubt we’d be able to keep a clean sheet so hopefully we’ll out score them.

-

That midfield of Winks and Sissoko is poor with Skip some academy youngster as backup. Not top four material.

If we can dominate that midfield area we can control possession. Then just have to take our opportunities.

-

I think Pogba will be up to the level and he's showing finally how good he is, he will boss the match and we all know the result in such cases.

They also have a thread about our new stadium too and are happily taking the piss!

I guess March makes sense. Everybody knows it’s the best month for cheese.

A few more extracts from RedCafe though it's all a bit random in there. Their threads get derailed as often as those on here!

"I believe that with our defence at the moment the only way to play is attack and try to stop Spurs pushing forward"

"I am a bit worried about Kane, and somehow about Son and Eriksen but less about Alli recently, I think his form is somewhat down."

"I have a horrible feeling we will lose... quite convincingly. We should not forget the amount of work left to be done and the distance between where we are and where we should be."

"Martial is much more naturally gifted than Kane " LOL

"Martial has great potential and is a good player, but simply not on Kane's level yet. A better comparison for Martial from Spurs is Son."

"tell me what has Kane achieved to be world class? Kane had a season where he managed 40 goals, it was an anomaly season like the ones Carrol and Ings had in their career. Don't know what's bizarre their. "

"If the team runs more, and hardworking than Spurs, i believe we can beat them. Not counting on flair, but we got players with better flair than them."

"Putting Spurs in the same Bracket as City is disingenuous in my opinion. There are so many factors that put City at a level above Tottenham, basically every way to assess a football team. Creating chances, preventing chances, starting eleven quality, squad depth, manager quality, league table, goal difference.

I'm struggling to think of anywhere where Spurs can actually beat City, it's arguable whether your best player even gets into their team, that's how stacked their team is. This is a city team without their own best player by the way, a fit and firing De Bruyne will probably be what wins them the title if they do win it, they are unstoppable with him in the team. "

"Honestly mate, look yourself in the mirror. Your posts are utterly embarassing. Are you the same bloke who has been arguing that Lukuku is as good as Kane in the Lukuku thread? "

"Spurs vs United vs Mike Dean. Epic Threesome."

United Fans are some of the most delusional football fans I've ever come across.

Yes, OGS has brought new life to their squad, Which was never going to be hard anyway if you remove Maureen's negative tactics, but to act like that after only 5 games against much weaker opposition is a seriously dangerous way to look at things. The only players in their squad who would get into our XI is Pogba and Martial. No other United player is better than what we have in the equivalent position.

I can't wait until they drop points or get a decent thrashing from one of the better teams (It could be us on Sunday) in the league just to bring them back down to earth.

Current table actually suggests that it IS top four material, unlike United's.

This comment caused me to go digging to see what kind of imbecile would mention Carroll and Ings in the same breath as Kane.

Turns out, it's this sort of imbecile:
MostProbablyBlindButDefinitelyMoronic said:
Salah was world class player last season. He proved it at high level. What have Kane managed? Nothing. The like of Ings and Carrol had season where they exceeded expectations scoring a good number of goals, do you think they are world class?

Kane is a good striker, but let wait for him to do something relevant for him to be labelled "world class"

Their own fans are calling out this idiot, so my job here is redundant. His delusion goes pages back but here's a good starting point:
