He tore us apart in the game in which Defoe scored an overhead kick in the first minute.

And dont forget that Fletcher was sent off in the first half.

I was at that game and can honestly say I've never seen a better performance from a player at the lane live. He was incredible. One minute a left back the next a right winger. It was like there was two Rooneys on the pitch.

If Rooney's career happened at the same time as Shearer, Lineker, Owen etc. nobody would think he was that special when you look at his stats, he got lucky in many ways that those guys were either finished or finishing when he arrived as England's only good striker.

His goal scoring figures aren't very good thou, he's only got the records he has due to playing for so many years...

Rooney in 15 seasons (played 25 or more games in every season) broke the 20 league goal mark twice o_O

Kane has scored over 20 league goals three seasons running.... :woot:

Rooney was incredible when he arrived on to the scene. At Everton and his early days at United he was clearly gifted. Have to agree with others and say the talent has been coached out of him. I don't care about his England record. Knocks them in against cannon fodder but can't produce the goods in meaningful games.

He did a lot to damage himself too, his weight fluctuates massively in and out of competition because of his shit diet, he drinks to excess and he smokes.

It's not all about goals. Betgkamp and cantona were never that prolific but their effect on the team and skill were unquestioned. I still rate sheringham as a great player but he changed his game to play with klinsmann and shearer.

when ever I think of Rooney the thing that spring to mind is the Iceland game.

The commentator was just saying some bollocks about Rooney urging the team to up the tempo and pass the ball a bit faster when the ball went to him. He stops, holds onto the ball for what seems an age. Telegraphs then sends an attempted Hollywood pass that didn't go within 10yards of whoever it was aimed at giving away possession for te umpteenth time.

Injuries really did for Rooney.

Rooney has also put his body on the line, bearing in mind some new detail that I heard recently about the night in April 2010 when United faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League, 2-1 down from the first leg in Bavaria, and the sheer desperation for him to play, even with damaged ankle ligaments.

You might remember the shock when Rooney was named in the starting lineup (the medical prognosis was he would be out for up to three weeks). On the pitch, he was restricted to running in straight lines. He had to be substituted 10 minutes into the second half and missed the following league game against Blackburn. What you might not realise, however, is that Rooney, an incredibly selfless footballer sometimes, agreed to give it a go despite still being on crutches, wearing a protective boot, on his way to Old Trafford. Compare that with the suspicion in United’s dressing room last season that one player had pulled out of a game because he “didn’t fancy it” only to train perfectly normally the following day.

Rooney has worn strapping on that right ankle ever since and these are the details that sometimes go amiss when opinion turns against him. Perhaps, in that respect, he is unfortunate that his 14 years in the Premier League have taken in the age of social media. Few things on Twitter invite such a froth of condemnation as daring to type a few words of praise on his behalf.

I think as well, what worked for him is when he was the main attraction. At Everton he was the one special talent. And then when he came to Man Utd he was the young one who was going to go on to do all these things. And whilst he has been great... he's never been the best at Man Utd. He's never had the team built around him. Credit where its due he used to always fit into the team and do what was needed but with the likes of Ronaldo in the team, I don't think that helped Rooney. Kane is and always will be our focal point. We essentially build around him, I don't think Rooney's had much of that.

Bringing this back on topic, I'm friends with a few Arsenal fans, but some fairly level headed ones. They've been full of praise and Kane and are team. It's so refreshing. Though in talking about Kane and how good he is, we were looking at the stats of the top scorers in the top 5 leagues, none of them played for the champions of that league.

Rooney was a bit special. Anyone who doesn't see that is kidding themselves.

Opinion are like arseholes, I understand that, But IMO opinion we have been sold a pup when it comes to Rooney. We all got caught up in the Media Hype that has surrounded Rooney and we ended up in an 'Emperors New Clothes' scenario.

There is no doubt that Rooney was a potential superstar when he burst on the scene, but he never seemed to get there. For every statistic that people throw around to show how fantastic he is, there is always an argument to counter that claim.

If my memory serves me correctly, he was never courted or approached by one of the other big clubs in Europe, Barcelona, Real, Bayern or PSG never showed an interest in him. Even when he was throwing his toys out the pram over his contract. (I could be wrong about this, my memory isn't that good anymore and I stand to be corrected)

But if this is the case, how come no other clubs in Europe revered him to the same degree that many have here in England?

Rooney alongside Ronaldo 2006-09 (three titles in a row, as well as a CL win and another final) was simply incredible. Then scored 26 league goals in 09-10 and 27 in 11-12. So easy to look back negatively on his career because of the way it petered out. But he was fucking sensational and will go down as an absolute legend of the game. Anyone denying that is talking out of their arse.
