He was at the time and as it says, his first season was very good with them. I suspect, too good for the egos at Real.

The club simply had to have him to add to their collection of shiny things and have since cast him in a supporting role, which is a shame..

If we had Bale in our team at the moment then we would very possibly win the league.

At the time we sold him he was one of the most effective players in world football.

He has the perfect image for marketing.

To us, he was worth that money. His value to Madrid will always be lower than to us, he was never going to be their talisman on and off the field with Ronaldo there-whatever Perez said.

Madrid massively overpaid, they wanted to parade a marque signing for their fans, rather than investing in players they really needed to improve the team and squad.

Doesn't come across at all well there Rafa.

'When what's his name [Andre Villas-Boas] came he said to me 'you're not my number one' and I had played two years, like, unbelievable, so for me it was really strange that he said that to me. So then I said, well, it's better to leave and that is what happened.'

Seems a bit arrogant and shows unnecessary disrespect towards AVB.

Au contraire, LVdB, Au contraire ... Rafa was dead right, AVB fucked up there

Not about leaving -it would have been better for us & probably for him if he'd stayed as it turns out - but it was a ridiculous way to treat & speak to a player of Vdv's stature & we went on & seriously missed him that campaign

Rafa still has a grudge on him for stealing that goal from him against Blackburn in a 4-2 win.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of AVB's decision, he was the manager and it was his to make. VDV not even referring to him by name is massively unprofessional and smacks of a bruised ego...which is pretty much a given for a Dutch international.

You don't refer to a former boss as 'what's his name'. It doesn't matter who was right or who was wrong, it's just a ****ish thing to do.

Real will easily make that money back on him through sell on and merch fees (they may have already done so), and he was arguably priceless to us given his influence so I can't see how he was overpriced. He's also far classier than anything Real have, which is surely worthy of a premium...

We'll have to see won't we, if the stories about Man Utd wanting to offer £100mil+ for him turn out to be true then maybe we underpriced him.
Best that could happen to him is Ronaldo going to PSG

He's not saying that he was not worth the money, more along the lines that he thinks he's not up there with Messi or Ronaldo..

Really? This is interesting new information. So I should have total respect for all my former bosses regardless of how they have treated me? Or is that just footballers?

Yes, that'd be the professional approach.

Actually there is an interesting discussion here regarding Bale, VdV and our current crop.
- Would having Bale make us Title contenders?
- Would we fall into habits of allowing Bale to do everything?
- Is it a good thing that we no longer have VdV type players in our squad?

Now, I ask these questions as someone who idolised both players, but I look back now and see a real imbalance in our team vs what we have now. Its different rather than one being massively better than the other, but back then we had a couple of World Class players, where as now I would say we have none (Lloris maybe an exception) and instead have a team.

We relied so heavily on Bale to get us out of jail, we had player like Vdv who were fired up, pompous, brilliant, but equally prone to going missing or not being fit enough.

AvB came in and tried to do what he was trying at Chelsea, clear the slate of egos and work towards a team ethic, but his methods were again misplaced. But was it so different in what is happening now? Was AvB used as the catalyst, but needed to be a bit of a scapegoat in order to ruffle feathers to the point where egos left? As a result I feel Poch has come in at the right time, similar in AvB in his team ethic approach and not interested in egos, though different in his methods on how to achieve it (and has switched us from possession to more direct style).

Back to Bale and 100m from Man United, IF that were to happen, then wow. It would just show how far apart the clubs are financially and how important it is to get the new stadium. Not that I condone 100m on any 1 player, but the power to even consider it...!

I do miss both players, but I don't miss the Spurs we were back then as much. I like what we are becoming. This is a team that is not just about graft, but who bleed for the team if necessary, who all bust a gut every match but are also technical and have the ability to entertain. I am beginning to identify with this team almost more than any other in the time I have been a fan and IF that continues, that will be some achievement.
